COURSE SYLLABUS FOR ENGLISH 5 Course code: Semester 1 - School year 2011 2012

It provides students opportunities to practice four basic skills and language areas for the TOEIC (score level from 400 450), to be equipped with essential learning, test-taking strategies, and international communicative competence at low intermediate level. The course focuses on enhancing students speaking, listening and reading skills as well as the language knowledge in order to develop their TOEIC test taking abilities, thus, improves their TOEIC scores as well as day-to-day business communication. A step-by- step approach to skill building, theme-based and functionbased approaches to grammar and vocabulary exploration are employed to help students develop a real understanding of the language and English competences. Course unit value: 3 credits Course objectives By the end of the course students are expected to be able to Skim and scan the short advertisements, announcements and memos, business letters for general and specific ideas at the rate of TOEIC 450 score level. Use some pre-listening and while-listening strategies to tackle the listening tasks of TOEIC at the level from 400-450 scores Respond to the questions about a short text and presenting their ideas at the pre-intermediate level Understand and use correct functional vocabulary and Grammar for daily, business and TOEIC purposes Use some test-taking strategies to deal with the real TOEIC test Transfer what they acquire and learn from the course to their real life communicative tasks with high confidence Deliberately use self monitoring and self assessment skills to develop their self and cooperative learning strategies and develop their intrinsic learning motivation. Methodology 1

Combination of Communicative and Learner training approach. Learners are encouraged to take part in the role plays, making conversations both in daily life and business environment, presentations, , group discussions and exchanging the ideas, giving feedback on the activities . The instructor plays a variety of roles such as: the facilitator, the counselor, the model, presenter.who will diagnose and design the activities appropriate to students as well as encourage their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Evaluation and Grading On-going assessment: 40% (attendance + class participation + mini-tests) Attendance: 10% Class participation: 15% (focusing on speaking, listening skills) Quizzes or mini-tests: 15% 60%

Final assessment:

A written test which is an achievement one in the format of the full TOEIC test with Listening and Reading sections

Grading Scale: 10-mark scale Course Policies Students are required to attend at least 80% of class meetings do homework as assigned actively participate in class activities as well as in pair and group work.
