Introductory Message

Welcome to TVL 12 – ICT (Computer System Servicing)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Antique and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TVL 12 – ICT (Computer System Servicing) Activity Sheet will help
you facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential
Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between
you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links
to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TVL 12 – ICT (Computer System Servicing) Activity Sheet is

developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning
material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent
learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Check Normal Server Function in Accordance with Manufacturer’s Instructions

I. Learning Competency with Code

LO 2: Configure Network Services (TLE_IACSS9-12SUCS-IIIf-j-IVa-j-38)
2.1 Check normal server function in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions

II. Background Information for Learners

In this lesson, you will be able to identify various boot processes. This
is very vital since a computer startup failure might happen. Having a
successful boot process in the operating system is the primary step in
dealing with computer servers.

BOOT PROCESS

Five Major Stages of the Boot Process

1.Pre-boot
2. Boot
3. Load
4.Initialization
5. Log -on

Each of the stages, there are steps that needs to be followed by the
end user. You need to observe how the process works and how files is
being utilized in the boot process.

a. Pre-boot
Defined as the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) start up process.
This can be done by turning on or resetting your computer and by
performing the POST (Power-On Self-Test).

Common Issues and Errors During the Pre-boot Process

4
1. Corrupt MBR – when the master boot record is corrupted because
of computer viruses.
2. Improperly configured Hardware – this happen when the Hard
Drive is not detected or recognized.

3. No Partition is Mark Active – No Partition is created or when you

recently use the Fdisk utility.
4. Corrupt or missing Ntldr file - This may happen when the Ntldr
file is corrupted or deleted by a virus.

b. Boot
In this stage, the Windows Boot Manager read the boot
configuration data (BCD). If multiple boot partition is configured in the
computer, the end user can select which partition will be loaded.

Common Issues and Errors During the Boot Process

1. Missing or corrupt files – the boot sequence will not succeed if the
following are corrupted or missing due to computer virus infection.
 Nltdr
 Boot.ini
 Bootsecs.dos
 Ntdetect.com
 Ntoskrnl.exe

An error message will be displayed in the computer screen on

which file is missing or corrupted.

2. Improperly configured Boot.ini file – when you misconfigured the

Boot.ini file or when you do the set up manually.

3. Unrecognizable improperly configured hardware - If the error that

appears is due to Ntdetect.com, the issue comes from the
hardware.

c. Load, Initialization, and Logon

Load – The Windows Server 2008 “SPLASH” screen comes up.

According to e-tesda.gov.ph, “Windows Boot Loader loads the

operating system kernel, the hardware abstraction layer that provides
the interface between the operating system and a particular set of
hardware, the Registry file, and the drivers for basic hardware devices,
such as the monitor, mouse, and keyboard.”

Initialization

5
Agreeing to e-tesda.gov.ph, “The OS kernel is initialized and
takes over from the Windows Boot Loader, bringing up the graphical
display and filling the Registry with HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\
HARDWARE key, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\SELECT
subkey (called the “Clone Control Set”) and loads the remainder of the
device drivers.

Logon – when the Windows Server Operating System GUI

(Graphical User Interface) comes up and log on screen will display.

Possible Errors in the Log-on stage

 Incorrect username and password
 If the computer is part of the domain, this error will
happen if there’s unavailability of a DNS server or
domain controller to authenticate the request.
