Operational Steps DM4P

The document provides operational steps for using the PetrogLite software: 1) Open the PetrogLite icon, define an experiment name which creates data files, and configure the number of counts and scan pattern. 2) Define the area of interest on the sample by selecting two points, which determines the x and y step size. 3) Visualize the distribution of counting points and begin logging maceral counts using keyboard keys, with space and backspace for skip and undo. 4) Open the associated .lg2 file in Excel to view the experiment report once target counts are complete.

PetrogLite Operational steps:

• Double left-click on the desktop icon to open the SW-

The Software opens as below with initialization of stepping-stage for X & Y home-positions –

• Define your experiment by giving the name : FILE→ NEW

The below confirmation message appears and it needs to confirm by pressing YES option.
(Here basically two files are created with the same name entered by the operator but their
extensions are different; one is with .lg1 extension and the 2 nd one is with .lg2 extension. The
.lg2 extension file contains the experiment o/p data).

• Go to SLIDE→ CONFIGURE to enter the no. of counts and scan-pattern. The below screen
opens -
Enter target counts in “Number of Steps” area and select ‘Elliptical’ Scan-pattern for Round-
shaped pallet or ‘Rectangular’ pattern for Square pallet. Close the window by pressing OK
button.
• Define scan-area from the pallet by clicking SLIDE→ AREA OF INTEREST. The below screen
comes-

To clear earlier defined AOI (if any), click to button.

• For creating a new AOI, two axial-points on the sample need to be defined as shown below–

USER

The stepper-stage (petrog) can be moved to reach the desired sample-position by pressing
the soft-buttons around the Displayed slide-area –

Once AOI is created correctly by defining both the reference points, a red coloured area
will be formed. The X & Y-step size will be displayed as below-

This step size depends on two factors -> ‘AOI size’ & ‘no. of counts’ entered. As AOI is mostly
fixed due to fixed sample diameter in a particular lab, the step-size can be adjusted by
entering no. of counts more than 500 (e.g., if 500 counts give step size of 750 micron,
around 1000 counts can be entered to obtain a step-size of 500 micron.) Close the AOI-
selection window by confirming OK.
• The distribution of counting-points can be visualised from SLIDE→ SHOW POINTS

• Select LOGGING→ LOG (NEW)

• It’s now ready for logging the maceral counts; as said earlier, the keys from keyboard are the
channels for different grains. The “Space-bar” key is used as SKIP option and “Backspace” for
last undo. Once target counts complete, a message will be displayed confirming the same.
Exit the application.

• To see the report, open a new excel file and from ‘File→ Open’ option browse for the
particular .lg2 file and advance through the steps to finish (the COMMA option should be
checked while moving through the steps.)
