LessonPlan DigestiveSystem Session2

The lesson plan outlines a science lesson on the digestive system for 8th grade students. It includes 3 learning objectives that focus on the digestive system, related body systems, and diseases caused by nutrient deficiencies. The lesson contains 3 activities: 1) a word search on digestive organs and processes, 2) matching digestive processes to responsible organs, and 3) filling in the blanks about the role of enzymes in digestion. The lesson aims to explain the stages of digestion from ingestion to excretion and the importance of proper nutrition.

I. OBJECTIVE
A. Content 1. The Digestive system and its interaction with the circulatory, respiratory, and
Standard excretory systems in providing the body with nutrients for energy.
2. Diseases that result from nutrient deficiency and ingestion of harmful substances,
and their prevention and treatment.

B. ELICIT From our previous meeting, we have discussed the digestive organs responsible for
breaking down foods in the process called digestion. Right?

Now, let us find the words related to our discussion last meeting.

Activity 1: STILL REMEMBER

Instructions: Find the words related to digestive system. It is either an organ,
enzymes, or the process which takes place in digestive system,

Key to corrections:
1. Small intestine
2. Bile
3. Mouth
4. Villi
5. Stomach
6. Large intestine
7. Gastric juice
8. Ingestion
9. Swallowing
10. Pharynx
11. Esophagus
12. Peristalsis

C. ENGAGE Activity 1: LET’S EAT AND FEEL IT!

Instructions: The teacher will distribute a variety of foods (soft foods i.e.,
marshmallow, biscuit, etc.) and will instruct the class on what to do next. At the count
of three, the students will eat the food and will answer the questions.

Guide questions:
1. What is the name of your food?
2. How was the taste?
3. What is the texture of your food? Is it smooth or rough? Soft or hard?
4. Did you make so much effort in chewing your food?
5. How was it feel when you swallow it? Is it easy to swallow?
6. Did you feel the food passing through your esophagus?
7. Do you have any idea on what is happening inside your body when you
eat foods?

That will be our discussion for today. You will know what enzymes are involved in
the process of digesting foods as well as the processes taken place during the
digestion. Are you ready class?

D. EXPLORE ACTIVITY 2: BE PAIR WITH ME!

Instructions: The following words in the box below are the processes involved in
digestion of foods in the body. Determine the organs that is responsible in those
processes by putting an arrow and writing the word corresponds to it.

Ingestion Mastication Enzymatic Digestion

Swallowing Gastric Digestion Gastric emptying

Intestinal digestion Nutrient absorption Defecation

Water and electrolyte absorption Secretion of pancreatic juice

Production of bile

Key to Correction:
 Mouth – Ingestion, mastication, enzymatic digestion
 Pharynx - Swallowing
 Esophagus - Swallowing
 Stomach – Gastric digestion, gastric emptying
 Small intestine – Intestinal digestion, nutrient absorption
 Pancreas – secretion of pancreatic juice
 Liver – production of bile
 Large intestine – absorption of water and electrolytes

E. EXPLAIN Guide Question

 What is Digestion?
 What are the enzymes responsible in breaking down foods?
 What are the processes of digestion happening in the mouth, pharynx, and
esophagus/
 What is the process of digestion in the stomach?
 What is the process of digestion in the small intestine?
 What is the process of digestion in the large intestine?
 What is Absorption and Assimilation?
F. ELABORATE ACTIVITY 3: ENZYME ON THE GO!
Instructions: Fill in the blanks by writing the correct words describing the role
of enzymes in digestive process. Select your answers from the box below.

Mouth Break it down Proteins

Enzymes Saliva Digestive Tract
Gastric juices Digestion Maltase
Nutrients
When we eat food, it enters the 1.) _______ and is broken down by
mechanical digestion, such as chewing. This increases the surface area of the food,
making it easier for enzymes to 2.) __________. As the food passes through the 3.)
_________, it is mixed with enzymes that are produced by various organs, including
the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and small intestine.
In the mouth, 4.) _________ contains the enzyme amylase, which begins the
breakdown of carbohydrates. In the stomach, 5.) _________ containing hydrochloric
acid, and the enzyme pepsin break down proteins. The pancreas secretes 6.)
_________ into the small intestine, including amylase, lipase, and proteases, which
break down carbohydrates, fats, and 7.) _________, respectively.
The small intestine also produces enzymes, such as lactase, sucrase, and 8.)
_______, which break down specific sugars. These enzymes are essential for the
digestion of lactose, sucrose, and maltose, respectively.
Enzymes are critical for efficient 9.) ___________ because they accelerate the
chemical reactions that break down food molecules. Without enzymes, digestion
would be much slower and less efficient. Overall, enzymes play a vital role in the
digestive system by breaking down food into 10.) __________ that can be absorbed
by the body and used for energy, growth, and repair.

Key to Corrections:
1. Mouth
2. Break it down
3. Digestive tract
4. Saliva
5. Gastric juices
6. Enzymes
7. Proteins
8. Maltase
9. Digestion
10. Nutrients

G. EVALUATE ACTIVITY 4: Share your thought!

Instructions: Create slogan about the importance of Proper Nutrition and how this
impacts the digestive process. Make this on a one whole coupon bond.

Criteria:

1. Relevance to the theme – 10 points

2. Creativity and originality – 10 points
3. Clarity and neatness – 5 points
4. Impact – 5 points

Scoring:
 25 – 30 points; The slogan is highly relevant, creative, clear, impactful.
 20 – 24 points: The slogan is relevant, creative, clear, and/or memorable, but
could be improved in some areas.
 15 – 19 The slogan is somewhat relevant and/or creative, but lacks clarity or
memorability.
