ChatGPT

for lead
Generation
How to use ChatGPT to improve outreach
effectiveness, draft cold messages, and give
prospects and clients value.
There are three areas of lead generation where ChatGPT can make a real
difference to the quality and efficiency of your responses-
* Outreach strategy: ChatGPT can help you understand audience pain
points, respond to common objections, find FAQs, and discover your
product’s value.9
* Outreach messaging: Based on your strategic findings, ChatGPT can
help you craft engaging, relevant outreach messages for LinkedIn,
email, and cold calling
* Lead nurturing: Once you’ve engaged leads, ChatGPT can give you
endless ideas for content that will add value and take them through
the lead funnel from not-ready-to-buy to sale. It can even create
these messages for you, giving you extra time for the hard parts of
selling.

This guide contains 25+ customizable templates for ChatGPT prompts

proven to work for lead generation. You’ll get best practices and top tips
on how to use the prompts for the best results.

Best practices for ChatGPT prompts

Here’s a quick checklist for creating relevant, ready-to-go content using

ChatGPT prompts:

Make your asks SPECIFIC.

Define your terms well.
Get clear on tone.
Remember what ChatGPT CAN’T do.
ALWAYS check and edit its output. ChatGPT can take you 70-90%
of the way, but that final human once-over is essential to avoid
alienating your prospects.
Remember these ChatGPT limitations

ChatGPT’s data set only goes up to September 2021

ChatGPT isn’t connected to the internet, has limited knowledge of
events after 2021, and might sometimes give harmful instructions or
biased responses.

You can’t use it like Google to find up-to-date information or news. You
should carefully evaluate any factual responses it gives you about your
product, competitors’ offerings, or industry advances.

J It sometimes lies
‘Hallucinations’ are what developers call the quirk in AI tech that sees
the machines sometimes spout blatant lies. You should sense-check
anything produced by ChatGPT and avoid using it for purely factual
responses.

w There are some data security issues

If you’re using ChatGPT, be sensible about what
input you give it. Avoid adding sensitive
information – especially about identifiable
individuals, such as prospects or customers.
Otherwise, a future data breach could leave you in
hot water.
How to access ChatGPT

You’ll need an OpenAI account. You can create one by heading to

ChatGPT here and clicking the sign-up button

Enter your email address and a password, verify your account using

your phone number, and you’re ready to go!

How to use ChatGPT to improve
your outreach strategy

Before you begin, clearly define your audience. Who is it that you’re
selling to? Get as specific as possible.

Information to include:

Industry

Role/Job title

Company size

Who they service/sell to (if B2B)

Discover audience pain points and

how your product solves them

Creating compelling outreach requires a deep understanding of your

prospect’s psychology and pain points.

You can use ChatGPT to suggest pain points you might not have thought
of and summarize how your product can solve them.

Use this two-step blank template:

What are 5 pain points someone who is the [your

prospect’s role] [at your prospect’s type of company / in
your prospect’s industry] might face?
What are 5 ways [your product] could help this [your
prospect’s role] at this [your prospect’s industry] company?

Or, to combine the two and save time, use the following:

Give me 5 pain points a [your prospect’s role] [at your

prospect’s type of company / in your prospect’s industry]
might face, and how [your offering] could solve them.

Discover common objections and

questions; Get answers to FAQs and
handle common objections

Learning about common objections and questions helps you avoid getting
tripped up on sales calls and gives you the raw material to create
outreach messages that convert.

Luckily, ChatGPT is great at helping you get to the heart of your target
audience’s concerns. And it only takes a few straightforward prompts.

Here’s the two-step template:

What objections might a [your prospect’s role] [in your

prospect’s industry / offering your prospect’s services]
have to buying or using [your product]?
Help me answer these objections

Or, to combine the two and save time, use the following:

What objections might a [your prospect’s role] [in your

prospect’s industry / offering your prospect’s services] have
to buying or using [your product]? Underneath each
objection, please give me a response I can use to convince
the [your prospect’s role] to use [your product].

And here’s the template tweaked to cover common questions instead:

What questions might a [your prospect’s role] [in your

prospect’s industry / offering your prospect’s services] have
about buying or using [your product]? Underneath each
question, please give me a response I can use to convince the
[your prospect’s role] to use [your product].
Generate cold call scripts, elevator
pitches, & battle cards for discovery calls

You can use ChatGPT to create a ready-to-go script you can use to
answer objections or give an elevator pitch when cold calling or on a
discovery call.

Let’s roleplay a discovery call. Please act as [insert your role

and what you sell]. I will act as [insert your ideal prospect’s
information. As a minimum, include title and industry].

Top tip: now that you have a starter roleplay, you can add follow-up
prompts to get responses for particular pain points or objections.

Here’s the follow-up prompt if you want to use it for yourself:

How would the [your role] respond if the [your

prospect’s role] asked about [pain point]?

And some variations:

How would the [your role] respond if the [your

prospect’s role] objected to [objection]?
How would the [your role] respond if the [your
prospect’s role] asked for more information on [feature]?

Note: Using this format will give you a correctly formatted sales
script. If you ask ChatGPT to perform both roles, it won’t give you
a sales script off the bat. You’ll have to ask follow-up questions
to get the desired output. So use the templates exactly as we’ve
given them.
How to use ChatGPT to create
outreach messages

Creating outreach messages: the

general idea

ChatGPT is only as good as the prompts you put into it. If you want
responses that are actually compelling, you need to be specific. Taking
two seconds to define your target audience, ideal length, and tone of
voice at the outset makes a huge difference.

Ideate messaging hooks and cold opens

Strong hooks that get to the heart of your target audience’s pain points
can increase your open and conversion rates.

ChatGPT can generate pain points your target audience faces and then
explain how your product solves them. With this information, it can then
create compelling message openers to attract the attention of your
prospects.

Here’s a basic template:

Give me 5 pain points the [your prospect’s role] [at your

prospect’s company type / with your company’s offering]
might face, and how [your product] could solve them. Then,
using these pain points, come up with 3 options for the
opening sentence of an [your ToV markers] outreach message.
And here’s it tweaked for slightly different message openers:

Give me 5 pain points the [your prospect’s role] [at your

prospect’s company type / with your company’s offering]
might face, and how [your product] could solve them. Then,
using these pain points, come up with 3 options for an [your
ToV markers] message hook.

Create LinkedIn connection request messages

ChatGPT can help you come up with succinct openers if you’re stuck on
what to send when asking a prospect to connect.

It’s good to ask for 3-5 options, as some are likely to be better than
others.

The more information you have on a particular prospect, the more

specific you can be with your request. But sometimes you’ll want a
connection request that could work for multiple prospects.

If ChatGPT isn’t quite giving the results you want, you can ask it to edit
the responses slightly by adding an extra command. Some trial and error
are involved to get the best results.

Here’s your LinkedIn connection request prompt as a template:

Please generate 3 options for a LinkedIn connection request to

a [your prospect’s role] [at your prospect’s type of company].
Keep the tone [your tone of voice markers], mention I enjoyed
[your personalization hook], and say I’d love to share some
[your value-adding insights/expertise]. Make sure the message
is under 300 characters.
Craft LinkedIn or Email outreach messages

Longer outreach messages take a bit more trial and error and require
you to specify what content should be covered in the message body to
get the best results.

Get the prompt right, though, and you’ve just saved loads of time.

So, what’s the secret to prompts that get results?

Always ask ChatGPT to address your prospect’s pain points. If

you can name a specific pain point or two in your prompt, even
better. Remember, the better the information that goes in, the
better the results that come out.

Feed case studies, social proof, and statistics about return on

investment into ChatGPT before asking the tool to generate a
message. It can use these as specific examples to make
persuasive arguments – rather than making up generic results that
you have to change after.

You’ll need a clear idea of both your target audience and your
ideal tone of voice. Remember, you can use the tips and prompts
in the strategy section of this guide to help you define these if
you’re struggling.

Template 1:

Please generate a [LinkedIn/email] outreach message to the

[your prospect’s role] at a [your prospect’s company type].
Open with a strong hook, mention their pain points, then
briefly note how [your product/offering] can solve them. Keep
the tone [your ToV markers], and the message no longer than
100 words.
Template 2:

Please generate a [LinkedIn/email] outreach message to the

[your prospect’s role] at a [your prospect’s company type].
Open with a strong hook that mentions one or two specific pain
points faced by this persona. Then, say how [your product/
offering] could help to solve them. Keep the tone [your ToV
markers], and the message no longer than 125 words.

Pick a punchy subject line

Once that message is ready to send, all you need now is a punchy
subject line. No pressure.

Subject-line prompts are where you’ll want to start getting really

specific about your intended tone of voice. Is it informal and friendly?
Funny and pithy? Intriguing? Helpful? Concise?

Because it’s such a short length of text, play around with your tone of
voice markers and see what gives you the best response.

Here’s a template that you can use:

Please generate 5 potential subject lines for an outreach

message to [your prospect’s role] at [your prospect’s company
type], from someone offering [your product/solution]. The
subject line should focus on a pain point faced by the [your
prospect’s role] that [your product/solution] could solve. Keep
the tone [your ToV markers], and the heading no longer than
60 characters.
And here’s one that’s less restrictive about the heading’s content:

Please generate 5 potential subject lines for an outreach

message to [your prospect’s role] at [your prospect’s company
type], from someone offering [your product/solution]. Keep
the tone [your ToV markers], and the heading no longer than
60 characters.

Of course, if you have an email ready to go, you can make your prompts
more specific.

Follow-up with unresponsive leads

A crucial part of outreach is persistence. With 8+ touch points normally

needed to secure a meeting, you need engaging messages that can
chase unresponsive prospects without them feeling pestered.

Luckily, ChatGPT is more than capable of taking tedious follow-ups out

of your hands.

Here’s a template for follow-ups that take seconds, not hours:

Please generate a follow-up message to an initial outreach

message to the [your prospect’s role] at [your prospect’s
company type], from someone offering [your product/service].
The message should mention [your previous message], and
give specifics about how [your product/service] can help solve
[your prospect’s pain points]. End the message by suggesting
[your CTA]. Keep the tone [your ToV markers], and the
message no longer than 100 words.
Top tip: for more than one follow-up, remember that offering your
prospects value will increase the likelihood of engagement. See
the templates under ‘lead nurturing messages’ for ideas.

How to use ChatGPT for lead nurturing

Brainstorm your lead nurturing strategy,

value-adds, and marketing assets

We can use ChatGPT to learn what content prospects need educating

on, create ideas for value-driven CTAs, and brainstorm potential lead
magnets.

Here are some templates for generating valuable content to send to

prospects in your lead funnel.

Source ideas for value-add CTAs:

Please give me 5 ways I could add value in my outreach

message to [your prospect’s role] at [your prospect’s
company type]. I am a [your role] offering [your product].
Brainstorm thought leadership topics
and lead magnet options:

Please give me 5 ways I could add value in my outreach

message to [your prospect’s role] at [your prospect’s
company type] using [content type or lead magnet]. I am
a [your role] offering [your product].

Generate content marketing ideas to support

your outreach or nurture inbound leads:

Please give me 5 suggestions for content that would be

useful for [your target audience], from someone offering
[your product].

Please give me 5 suggestions for content that would add

value to an outreach message to [your target audience],
from someone offering [your product].
Get ideas and templates for social posts

Social selling is a key part of engaging prospects, but coming up with

post ideas and finding the time to write them is hard.

With the right prompts, ChatGPT solves this by generating content ideas
and creating posts around them.

First, ask ChatGPT to generate some content ideas:

I am a [your role] offering [your product/service]. Please

give me 5 ideas for [content type] posts I could create to
share on LinkedIn or other social media.

Pick one, then use this template to create a draft LinkedIn post:

Please write a short, snappy LinkedIn post about [your

chosen content idea]. Keep the paragraphs short, and use
bullet points where possible.

Remember, you can ‘feed’ a lot of this information into ChatGPT at the
beginning of your conversation, so there’s even less to do manually.

Top tip: Let ChatGPT do 90% of the work, then use your insights
and position as an industry expert to polish off the final 10%, and
you have a great content-creation machine that will nurture
existing connections and establish your voice as a thought leader.
Create a lead nurturing strategy with ideas

for content types, topics & subjects

Struggling to build out your lead nurturing? Ask ChatGPT for help with

your strategy.

The template below will prompt ChatGPT to give you suggestions of

ways to keep leads who’ve not yet converted engaged:

I am a [your role] offering [your product/services]. My

target audience is [ideal buyer persona] who [key aim of

your ideal buyer persona]. Please give me 5 ideas for how

to nurture these leads.

Lead nurturing messages

Once you’ve chosen a lead-nurturing idea and created lead magnets and

assets, use ChatGPT to create the marketing messages around them.

Here’s how you could create a nurturing message inviting a prospect to

a webinar (one of the content ideas ChatGPT gave me after using the

template above):
I am a [your role] offering [your service/solution]. My
target audience is [your target persona]. Please create a
message letting these leads know about [the webinar/
event/service] my company is running [on date] on
[subject of your webinar/event/service]. Keep the tone
[your TOV markers].

Of course, you can use ChatGPT to produce lead nurturing messages

that aren’t attached to lead magnets, too:

I am a [your role] offering [your product/solution]. My

target audience is [your target persona]. Please create a
message I can send to these leads to nurture them and
keep them engaged with my product. Give them some tips
on overcoming [one of their core pain points]. Make sure
the message focuses on giving them value, rather than
pushing my product. Keep the tone [your ToV markers],
and the message no longer than 150 words.

As always with ChatGPT, if you can give greater specifics, it’ll give you
more valuable content.

An extra tip to take your lead nurturing to the next level is to then ask
this follow-up prompt:

Write a follow-up message that shows how my [product]

can help with each of these best practices. Don’t make it
too salesy – focus on giving them value instead. Again,
keep the tone [your ToV markers] and the message no
longer than 150 words.
Top Tip: It’s best not to be too precious. Often, you’ll get the best
results by asking for several options, then combining the best
parts of each to create unique content.
