2014. Understanding Mathematics Grade 7. Manila: Vicarish Publication and Trading, Incorporated.
PROCEDURE
A. Preparation
B. Motivation
A teacher needs to finish his report on the summary of the grades of the students in Math as to the
number of students who got 75-80, 81-85, 86-90, 91-95, 96-100. What is the best way the teacher
will use in order for him to finish as soon as possible. Would it be helpful if he will use frequency
table?
C. Presentation
Frequency distribution table of group data shows classes or intervals of data entries
with a count of the number of entries in each class. The frequency f of a class is the number of data entries
in the class.
D. Discussion/ Abstraction
Class intervals are intervals of equal length that cover the range of the data between the
minimum and the maximum values without any overlapping.
Class limits are the values at the two ends of each class interval.
Class mark is the average of the upper class limit and the lower class limit for each class of
data.
Class boundary in each data, the minimum possible value is called the lower class boundary
(lower limit minus 0.5) while the maximum possible value is called the upper class boundary
(upper limit plus 0.5).
Example 1: Consider the 3rd class of this frequency distribution table boxed in red.
Class Class
Class Limits Tally Frequency
Mark Boundaries
1–5 3 0.5 – 5.5 IIII 4
6 – 10 8 5.5 – 10.5 IIII 4
11 – 15 13 10.5 – 15.5 II 2
16 – 20 18 15.5 – 20.5 III 3
21 – 25 23 20.5 – 25.5 III 3
26 – 30 28 25.5 – 30.5 III 3
Based on this table,
The class interval is 5 by simply counting 11 to 15.
The class limits of the 3rd class are 11 – 15.
The class mark of the 3rd class is 13 by simply adding upper and lower class limits then divide by 2.
15+11 26
= =13
2 2
The class boundaries of the 3rd class are 10.5 – 15.5, where the lower class boundary is 10.5 (by
subtracting 11 by 0.5) and the upper class boundary is 15.5 (by adding 15 by 0.5)
E. Exercises
Arrange the number in an array and determine the range.
22,50,43,32,11,53,16,62,39,27
F. Generalization
Summarize the information by giving them guides on how to get class interval, class limits, class
mark, class boundaries.
G. Application
Provide another example for them to practice answering.
Example 2:
The following are the weights (in lbs) of grade 7 students. Construct a
frequency table using 7 as the desired number of class interval.
93 97 9 10 10 81 93 10 10
1 4 8 0 7
11 97 8 10 10 10 87 88 11
8 3 3 8 1 4
86 92 9 97 99 10 11 10 95
1 2 1 1
80 11 9 96 98 10 10 10 94
0 6 4 1 6
1. Find the class interval and the frequency of the second class.
2. Find the upper class limit and the lower class limit of the third class.
3. Find the class mark of the fourth class.
Find the upper class boundary and the lower class boundary of the sixth class.
H. Evaluation
Directions: Use the definitions above to answer the items below. Write your answer on the answer
sheet provided.
The frequency table shows the scores in a Filipino composition obtained by first year Bayani Class.
Scores Frequency
20-29 1
30-39 3
40-49 9
50-59 12
60-69 8
70-79 5
80-89 2
Total 40
4. Find the class interval and the frequency of the second class.
5. Find the upper class limit and the lower class limit of the third class.
6. Find the class mark of the fourth class.
7. Find the upper class boundary and the lower class boundary of the sixth class.
