PLAY- one of the most underestimated entity in our society. When people talk

about play, they think of it as a waste of time; something that is not productive. Don’t let

your children play outside its not safe; don’t let your children play for too long they need

to be creative. Don’t let your children play they need to study instead. Play is associated

with so many stigmas. Many people believe children don’t learn when they are playing.

However, things are changing with the growing world around us. With more and more

awareness, we are learning the advantages of play in early childhood development. The

different types of play in early childhood help shape how learning happens through play.

Sensory play is play that stimulates our senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound).

As children we learn best when we are engaged. When using our five senses, we are

more focused and are active learners. Sensory play is essential in early childhood

development; sensory play helps build complex learning, supports language, and is

recommended for self-regulation.

In early childhood complex learning happens when a child is involved with their

senses. These senses help develop a variety of skills in the beginning of their life.

Complex learning helps with brain development, cognitive growth, and enhances

problem solving skills (Jade, 2018, para.2). Children learn best by experience not by

being told what to do. When children are exposed to sensory play, they are able to

absorb the skills, and later are able to apply them in problem solving areas. By using

sensory materials, their brain is controlling all functions and processing it to make

sense. Complex learning happens when children use sensory play and establish a

connection with their cognitive problem-solving skills. According to Jade (2018)

“Sensory play supports a child’s cognitive growth; enhancing their thought process,

understanding and reasoning (para 7)”.

Sensory play is also considered crucial in helping language develop. It helps

form new vocabulary for children for example: when playing with play doh or slime

children learn worlds like “squish”, “stretch”, “roll”, and “squeeze”. Children are able to

communicate with a variety of words that they feel are descriptive with the action they

are performing. Sensory play also helps aid in social interaction with peers and other

educators. Children are freely able to express themselves and have fun doing it aswell.

According to Jane Hewes (2006), “Play fosters communication, developing

conversational skills, turn taking, perspective talking, and the skills of social problem

solving, persuading, negotiating, compromising, and co-operating (para. 7)”. By being

involved in sensory play children are learning how to communicate and understand

each other.

Lastly, sensory play is recommended and is considered a key aspect for self-

regulation. Self-regulation is when someone is able to control their feelings, emotions,

and behaviour. The process of taking signals from our body and the environment by

using our five senses and using them to focus on daily activities. According to Jade

(2018) “Therapeutic sensory play, using items such as light up toys, and therapy balls,

can help calm an anxious or restless child (para. 10).” By offering children with a

variety of sensory experiences and activities self-regulation skills are build. For

example: breathing exercises, listening music to relax, and giving others or a plush toy a

hug; children are able to respond to their body needs which help them calm down.

Sensory play holds a lot of value in early childhood development. A child’s

development can be enhanced by stimulating their senses with a range of sensory play

equipment and resources. According to Hewes (2006), “Play paves the way for learning

(para. 5)”. Sensory play or any type of play should be considered important; it should

be taken seriously in early childhood education. Educators and parents, should make

sure children have time set out to play. They should not look down upon it or discourage

it rather do the contrary. As guardians of these children we should recognize the value

of play and allow children to play on their own terms (Hewes, 2006, para.22).
