CHAPTER 11
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

VERY SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

1. What is the average wavelength of X-rays?
Ans. X-rays covers wavelengths from about 10–8 m (10 nm) down to 10–13 m (10–4 nm).
=Remote control systems of TV etc
=In the treatment of skin diseases
2. Give any one use of infrared rays. =Taking photographs when there is no visible light.
Ans. Infrared radiation is used in Thermopiles Bolometer, Infrared photographic film.

3. If the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation is doubled, what happens to the energy

of photon?
hc
Ans. Energy of a photon is given by E  , where h is Planck’s Constant and c is the speed of

light in vacuum. Therefore, when the wavelength is doubled the energy of the photon is
halved.

4. What is the principle of production of electromagnetic waves?

Ans. The principle of production of electromagnetic waves: the oscillating electric and magnetic
fields regenerating each other propagates as the electromagnetic wave through the space.

5. What is the ratio of speed of infrared rays and ultraviolet rays in vacuum?
Ans. The ratio of speed of infrared rays and ultraviolet rays in vacuum is 1 : 1.

6. What is the relation between the amplitudes of the electric and magnetic fields in free
space for an electromagnetic wave?
Ans. The ratio of the amplitudes of the electric and magnetic fields in free space for an
electromagnetic wave is the speed of light in vacuum.
Eo
c
Bo

7. What are the applications of microwaves?

Ans. Applications of Microwave:
 To cook food as it causes water and fat molecules to vibrate, which makes the
substances hot.
 Mobile phones use microwaves, as they can be generated by a small antenna.
 Wi-Fi also uses microwaves.
 Fixed traffic speed cameras.
 For radar, which is used by aircraft, ships and weather forecasters.
Due to short wavelengths, microwaves can easily penetrate into earth's atmosphere
8. Microwaves are used in Radars. Why?
Ans. Due to their short wavelengths, microwaves are suitable for the radar systems used in aircraft
navigation, the speed guns used to time fast balls, tennis serves, and automobiles.

9. Give two uses of infrared rays.

Ans. Infrared radiation is used in Thermopiles Bolometer, Infrared photographic film.
10. The charging current for a capacitor is 0.6 A. What is the displacement current across
its plates?
Ans. Outside the capacitor plates, we have only conduction current ic = i, and no displacement
current, i.e., id = 0. On the other hand, inside the capacitor, there is no conduction current, i.e.,
ic = 0, and there is only displacement current, so that id = i.
Therefore, the displacement current across the plates is equal to the charging current. i.e.,
id = 0.6 A
