Installation Guide
1 Document Conventions

In this document, +++ means ‘the path name where Review 6.3.SP1 is installed’.

So, for example, if you have installed your copy of Review in C:\AVEVA, then the
sentence:

“As an example, if you want to run Review with the stab.rvm provided in
+++\Review6.3.SP1\models”

should be read as

“As an example, if you want to run Review with the stab.rvm provided in
C:\\AVEVA\Review6.3.SP1\models:”

2 Hardware and Software Configurations

This section describes the PC hardware and software configurations that AVEVA
Review requires.

2.1 Hardware

• Processor. Intel IA-32 architecture, e.g. Pentium, at least 1 GHz.

• Memory. 256 MB minimum, 3 GB or more highly recommended.
• Graphics Card. High performance card recommended - see below.
• Storage. Approximately 250 MB – see AVEVA web-site for details.
• CD drive. CD-ROM will be used for media distribution.
• Mouse. 3-Button mouse required; Mouse with wheel strongly recommended.
For the latest recommendations, please refer to AVEVA’s support web-site:

http://support.aveva.com/cs/index.htm

2.1.1 Graphics Cards

Review uses the OpenGL standard for its 3D graphics. For best performance, a high
performance 3D graphics card with an overlay plane is strongly recommended. It is also
possible to run with a lower standard of 3D performance on some 2D graphics cards.
Due to the continually and rapidly changing availability of hardware accelerated
OpenGL Graphics Cards, an up to date list of supported graphics cards cannot be
included in this document.
However, the AVEVA Web site includes a current list of both tested and supported
graphics cards available. Please contact your support centre for details..

Other graphics cards that fully support the OpenGL standard should also work, but
AVEVA cannot offer assistance in configuring these. You may also find some problems,
for example when picking items or using some of the special texturing functionality.
A card with overlay places is strongly recommended: in this case, Review should be set
up using the menu option:
Tools>Options>Preferences>Feedback Rendering
Tick the check box for Enable Overlay Planes

If overlay planes are not enabled, functions such as locator handles will use XOR
graphics instead of Overlay Planes, with a loss of performance and quality.
Many graphics cards support dual displays: these should pose no particular problem if
set up in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.

2.1.2 Hardware Dependent Differences

There are no hardware dependent differences between Review 6.2 and 6.3.SP1 except
that:

• Stereo graphics are available only with appropriate graphics cards and
displays. Stereo images will appear to flicker if the display is not capable of
120 Hz refresh. See note below about driver set-up.
• Multi-screen display features are available only with the nVidia FX3000G
Graphics Card. The cards should be set up in accordance with the
manufacturers’ instructions.

2.1.3 Graphics card driver set-up

The latest advice on graphics card driver set-up is also on the AVEVA web-site.
There are particular points to note when running Review, especially with stereo
graphics.
The Stereo option requires suitable graphics hardware and correct driver settings,
which vary between manufacturers. It has been designed to work on suitable nVidia
graphics cards and uses Quad Buffering. Some other graphics cards claim to be Stereo
compatible but fail to work correctly with Review 6.3.SP1. Cards shown on AVEVA’s
web page as supporting Stereo have been tested.
For stereo graphics using the nVidia driver, the settings required are:

Open GL Settings>Additional Open GL Properties menu.

Enable Stereo on Open GL - use on-board DIN connector
Enable Overlay in Open GL - color indexed overlays (8bpp)

Failure to set these options correctly could result in Stereo graphics failing to work or
the Stereo option being greyed-out.

2.2 Software and Configurations

• Windows XP Service Pack 2

• Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (installed by Review if not already installed)
• Microsoft DirectX Version 9 (Runtime) (supplied separately on the CD-ROM)
• AVEVA Flexman 3.1
• MS Office Professional 2003 • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 (installed by
Review if not already installed) for Construction Sequence Component
• SQL Server 2000 SP3 or later for Stabilizer SQL Data
• Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (installed if not already installed) for
Stabilizer SQL Data and Construction Sequence
• Review is about 55 MB when installed, plus the Microsoft components above.

Hardware and Software Configurations

• Updated versions of the Microsoft components above may become available

from time to time. Review should continue to work with these: please refer to
the AVEVA support web-site for the latest recommendations.

2.3 Language Support

Review can in general support any character set supported by PDMS. By default,
PDMS projects can use any language whose characters are contained within the Latin-1
character set. However, it can also support other character sets: at the time of writing
these are:

• Latin-2
• Latin-Cyrillic
• Far Eastern (Chinese, Japanese & Korean)

PDMS projects need to be set up correctly to work with character sets other than Latin-
1. For details, please refer to the VANTAGE PDMS Installation Guide – section 5 in the
Version 11.6 version.
Please note that the PDMS Export function will by default export data for Review in the
correct format only for Latin-1. For other languages, it is necessary to use the command
EXPORT ENCODING UTFEight to set Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. For details, please
refer to the VANTAGE PDMS DESIGN Reference Manual - Part 4: Utilities, section 4.
There are currently limitations on the use of character sets other than Latin-1 for
signboards. These are noted in the Review User Bulletin.
