Code Institutional Courses Units

Religious Education 1 (God’s Saving Actions in History, Our 3
GEC RE 001 Story: From Abraham To Jesus)
This three-unit course introduces the students into the narrative of God's
saving actions in history told through the lens of the Old and New
Testaments. Preliminary discussions center on the phenomenological
reflection on religion as a universal phenomenon and on the initiative of
God who reveals Himself, His plan for and involvement in man’s life
through His creation and sacred texts. Story of God’s saving actions
presents the sequential events of the Fall of the first parents and God’s
offer of salvation through the instrumentality of His O.T. chosen people
(the Patriarchs), with whom He establishes His covenantal relationship
and to whom He makes promises. The struggles of the people’s faith-
journey to see God’s promises fulfilled and in establishing their identity as
God’s chosen people and as a nation, highlight the roles of the judges,
kings and prophets. The definitive revelation of God finds its fulfillment in
Jesus Christ, whose Incarnation, ministry, death and resurrection
constitute the economy of salvation.

Religious Education 2 (God In The Life Of The Church, In The 3

GEC RE 002 Sacrament & Beyond)
This three-unit course introduces the students into the reflective
discussions on the life of the Church, Liturgy and the Seven Sacraments
where Christ’s saving actions, by the working of Holy Spirit, continue to
be made present in the lives of the Christian faithful. The Church being
One, Holy, Universal and Apostolic takes as constitutive part of the
course. The Church as missionary in character, through the works of the
Christian faithful proper to their vocation as members of the hierarchical
Orders, Laity and Consecrated Life, is likewise introduced. The role of
Mary, as the spiritual Mother of the Church, model of faith and the first
disciple of Christ also finds its important place in the discussion. A finale
treatment on Resurrection of the Body, Communion of Saints and the Gift
of Eternal Life would complete the academic discussion on this three-unit
course. Prerequisite: Religious Education 1 (God’s Saving Actions in
History, Our Story: From Abraham To Jesus)

GEC RE 003 Religious Education 3 (Christian Living) 3

This three-unit course introduces the students into the Christian moral
guides which take as its starting point the concept of dignity as
foundational to moral life. The treatment of the O.T. Law and the New
Law of Christ (the Beatitudes and the commandment of Love) is at the
core of Judeo-Christian living. Ethical views like Natural Moral Law and
Virtue Ethics as part of the tradition Catholic Morality that are substantive
moral guides for Christian flourishing. The practical-social dimension of
the course takes into consideration the essential discussion on social or
distributive justice, social cooperation and solidarity, legitimate leadership
and concern for natural environments that are constitutive of describing
an ideal Christian community. Prerequisite: Religious Education 2 (God
In The Life Of The Church, In The Sacrament & Beyond)

GINST 001 Transformative Education through Critical Approach 3

This three-unit course introduces the students into a Transformative
Education through critical approach. The treatment of the course first of
all recognizes the fact that students who find themselves in higher
education institutions already carry with them some formed beliefs,
unquestioned assumptions or habits of minds that need to be critically
examined with the desired goal to lead an emancipated and purposeful
life. The course uncovers various kinds of assumptions or perspectives
about which teachers and students have to be critical about in forming
important decisions in life. Some theoretical tools or models of
transformative learning are employed in this course. The development
and employment of critical thinking competencies by the students is a
necessary means by which critical reflections on important issues can be
carried out. The students are expected to engage themselves in critical
discourses on some current issues, especially in the field of education,
which are mired in some heated political, economic and cultural
discussions of the time. The practical and social dimension of the course
requires the students to engage themselves in some ‘transformative
advocacy programs’ of the University that are implementable within their
localities.

GINST 002 Transformative Education through Values Integration 3

This three-unit course deals primarily with the process of transformative
learning through the integration of religious, moral-ethical and socio-
cultural values. The students are introduced into the Core Values of the
University of La Salette that characterize the identity, the vision, and the
mission of the institution and which distinctively define the kind of college
graduates the institution could contribute to nation building and to the
Church. Constitutive of value discussions is the presentation of the
different value theories and orientations that explain various belief
systems, desirable goals, standards and rank of importance. Identifying,
understanding and developing value competences of students occupy an
important place in class research and discussions. The course requires
the students to engage in Transformative Advocacy Programs of the
university that promote institutional Core Values. Prerequisite:
Transformative Education through Critical Approach
