Fall Is
Date: October 30, 2006 Grade: Kindergarten Subject: Writing Unit: Fall AZ Standard: Strand 1: Writing Process Prewriting S1C1 Includes using strategies to generate, plan and organize ideas for specific purposes. PO 1 Generate ideas through class discussion. PO2 Draw a picture about ideas generated through class discussion. Content Objective: The students will be able to name signs of autumn. Language Objective: The students will be able to generate ideas through class discussion and draw a picture about the ideas generated. Key Vocabulary: fall, autumn, preparation, harvest Supplementary Materials: Book: When Autumn Comes by Robert Maass Fall Is Sheet Pencils and crayons for each student Yellow Marker (for teacher) SIOP Features: Preparation: Links to Past Learning, Links to Background, Scaffolding: Guided Practice Grouping Options: Whole Class Integration of Processes: Writing, Speaking, Listening Application: Meaningful, Linked to Objectives Assessment: Individual, Written, Oral Motivation/Set: Tell students what they will learn about during this lesson: signs, things that happen, that tell us the season is Fall. Begin by reviewing the names of the four seasons. Show Four Seasons Chart and have child turn dial to Fall. Show the students real leaves that have changed color. Presentation/Procedure: Read the book When Autumn Comes Stop at various points and ask the students if they have done or seen something shown in the book. After reading the story, brainstorm with the students things that show us that it is fall. Provide prompts/ideas to encourage a variety of responses.

Practice/Application: Students draw a picture on Fall is Sheet provided. Teacher and Instructional Aide will assist students in completing the sentence Fall is... Teacher/Aide will write what students say on the line in yellow marker and students will trace over it. After drawing and writing their idea of what fall is, students may color the fall scene on the worksheet while others finish. They may also look at their copy of the National Geographic Magazine October issue, which is about Fall. Review/Closure: Several students will be selected to read their sentence Fall is.. and show their drawing. Teacher will review with students what they have learned. Assessment: The teacher will observe and assess student participation during the discussion of signs of fall. The teacher will observe during the drawing/writing period to check for understanding and ability to complete assignment. The teacher will assess understanding as child reads his sentence and shows his drawing. Extension: Collect leaves that have fallen from trees on school playground and make leaf rubbings. Sort collected leaves by color and size. Make AB pattern with leaves collected. Practice color word recognition by completing color by number fall scene. Practice 1-10 number order by putting pumpkins numbered 1-10 in order.
