What is DCI?
Data center interconnect (DCI) is a segment of the networking
market that focuses on the technology used to link two or more
data centers so the facilities can share resources. There are
many options for DCI connectivity and selecting the right one
depends upon a wide range of variables, including the location of
the data centers, the distance between data centers, bandwidth
and availability requirements, the capabilities of local service
providers and security concerns.
Current DCI Solutions
• QinQ – MAC-in-MAC (802.1ad – 802.1ah)
• L2TPv3
• MPLS (EoMPLS – VPLS)
• Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI)
• VXLAN
• OTV
• EVPN with VXLAN

COOKIE
• The L2TPv3 header contains a control channel cookie field that
has a variable length of 0, 4, or 8 bytes according to the cookie
length supported by a given platform for packet decapsulation.
• The variable cookie length does not present a problem when the
same platform is at both ends of an L2TPv3 control channel.
However, when different platforms interoperate across an L2TPv3
control channel, both platforms need to encapsulate packets with
a 4-byte cookie length.
L2TPv3 Encapsulation
Pseudowire Control Encapsulation
• Control encapsulation consists of 4 bytes and implements
sequencing with the L2TPv3 tunnel. It uses only the first bit
and bits 8 through 31. The value of the first bit defines if bits
8 through 31 contain a sequence number and if it needs to
be updated.
