READING PASSAGE: Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Technology
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that has the potential to transform many aspects of
our lives. From self-driving cars to intelligent virtual assistants, AI is already being integrated into many of
the products and services we use every day. But what exactly is AI, and how does it work?
2. At its core, AI is the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to perform
tasks that typically require human-like reasoning and decision-making. This can include tasks such as image
recognition, speech recognition, natural language processing, and even playing games like chess and Go. AI
algorithms are designed to learn from data and improve their performance over time, allowing them to make
better predictions and decisions as they gain more experience.
3. One of the most promising applications of AI is in the field of healthcare. AI algorithms can be trained
to analyse medical images and help doctors diagnose diseases like cancer with greater accuracy. They can
also be used to develop personalised treatment plans based on a patient's unique genetic makeup, improving
the efficacy of treatments, and reducing side effects.
4. In addition to healthcare, AI is being used in a variety of other fields, including finance, manufacturing,
and transportation. For example, AI algorithms can be used to analyse financial data and identify patterns
that can help investors make better decisions. In manufacturing, AI can be used to optimise production
processes and reduce waste, while in transportation, AI is being used to develop self-driving cars that could
help reduce accidents and traffic congestion.
5. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and there are also concerns about the potential
negative consequences of AI. For example, some experts worry that AI could lead to widespread job
displacement as machines take over tasks that were previously performed by humans. There are also concerns
about the potential for AI to be used for malicious purposes, such as cyberattacks or the development of
autonomous weapons.

6. Despite these concerns, the potential benefits of AI are too great to ignore, and many experts believe
that it has the potential to transform the world in ways we can't yet imagine. As AI continues to evolve and
become more sophisticated, it's up to us as a society to ensure that it is developed and used in a responsible
and ethical way that benefits everyone.
7. One of the key challenges in developing AI is ensuring that it is unbiased and free from discrimination.
Because AI algorithms are trained on data, they can reflect the biases and prejudices that exist in the data.
This can lead to outcomes that are unfair or discriminatory, such as an AI system that is more likely to approve
loan applications from certain racial groups than others. To address this issue, researchers are developing
new techniques to ensure that AI algorithms are fair and unbiased, such as using more diverse datasets and
developing new algorithms that are less susceptible to bias. [A]
8. [B] Another challenge in developing AI is ensuring that it is transparent and explainable. Because AI
algorithms can be highly complex and opaque, it can be difficult for humans to understand how they are
making decisions or predictions. [C] This can be a problem in situations where the stakes are high, such as in
healthcare or finance, where decisions made by AI algorithms can have significant consequences. To address
this issue, researchers are developing new techniques for "interpretable AI" that enable humans to understand
how AI algorithms are making decisions and predictions. [D]
9. In conclusion, AI is a powerful technology that has the potential to transform many aspects of our lives.
While there are concerns about its potential negative consequences, such as job displacement and
discrimination, there is also enormous potential for AI to improve healthcare, finance, manufacturing,
transportation, and many other fields. As AI continues to evolve, it's up to us as a society to ensure that it is
developed and used in a responsible and ethical way that benefits everyone. By addressing the challenges of
bias and transparency, we can create AI systems that are fair.
