Instrumental Music
What is Rondalla?
Rondalla is an ensemble of string instruments with a pick. It originated in Spain but became popular in
Philippine folk music after it was introduced in the 19th century. The word rondalla came from the Spanish word
ronda meaning “serenade”. Sometimes, rondalla is played with percussion instruments like the drums and
marimba.
3. Octavina- a 14-stringed lute, shaped like a small guitar, and played with a
plectrum. It plays a counter melody or harmony fill-in for a rondalla.
5. Double Bass or Bajo de Uñas- a bass guitar which looks like a big guitar and
is played by a plectrum.
1. Trumpets and cornets- These are the smallest instruments in the brass family
which produce the highest pitch.
3. Trombone- Unlike the French horn and trumpet, it is considered “low brass”
and reads from the bass clef.
6. Tuba and sousaphone- They are the lowest-pitched and largest instruments of
the brass family.
8. Bass drum- it provides the pulse, tone color, and dynamics, and it generates
excitement in a musical performance.
9. Cymbals- they put accents to the music being played by the brass band.
