Patterns of Physical Development

Although each baby is unique, they follow three general patterns of physical
development:

Head to toe
Near to far
Simple to complex

Head to Foot
The baby develops from head to toe.

Before birth, the head takes the lead in development

2 months after conception, the head is ½ the size of the entire fetus!

This same pattern continues after birth

First babies learn to lift their head

Then development proceeds to the arms and hands and they are able to pick
up objects

Later development continues to their feet and they are able to crawl and
then walk

Near to Far
Development starts at the trunk and moves outward

1st babies wave their arms for objects they want

Then they are able to grab objects with their palm

Finally they learn to pick up objects with their fingers and hands

Simple to complex
The first main activities are sleeping and eating

Gradually they learn more complicated tasks.

For example: from being fed they progress to eating with their fingers and
eventually to using a spoon and fork
