4. The motor of an engine is rotating about its axis with an angular velocity of 100 rev/minute. It comes
to rest in 15 s, after being switched off. Assuming constant angular deceleration, calculate the num-
ber of revolutions made by it before coming to rest.

the impulse given by the cue is purely horizontal. Find the value of

(a) After how long does the cylinder start rolling?
(b) What is the initial (a) translational energy (b) rotational energy, and (c) total energy of the
cylinder?
(c) What is the final (i.e. after rolling begins) (a) translational energy, (b) rotational energy, and (c)
total energy of the cylinder?
(d) Is the final total energy equal to the initial total energy of motion of the cylinder? If not, where
does the difference of energy disappear?
(e) Account for the loss of total energy of motion in the following way; find the work done by
friction on the body for is translational motion, and the work done against friction by the body as
regards its rotational motion. Show that the net work done by friction on the body is negative,
equal in magnitude to the loss of total energy computed in (d) above.
8. A hollow sphere of mass m is released from the top of an inclined plane of inclination 
(a) What should be the minimum coefficient of friction between the sphere and the plane to prevent
sliding?
(b) Find the kinetic energy of the ball as it moves down a length l on the incline if the friction
coefficient is half the value calculated in part (a).
