Day/Date: Handout Living Things - 1
From your observation, you can see the activities of living things. Maybe, around you there are
chickens, flowers, trees, and stones. They are living things. But, there are also non - living things. So,
what's the difference between living things and non - living things? Living things are different from
non-living things, because living things have certain characteristics. Non-living things don’t have these
characteristics. Do you know what are their characteristics? Let's learn it together!
Have you ever seen fish swimming or birds flying? Why does it happen? It happens because that is how
living things move. Living things can move because they have locomotion. Living things move in different
ways, such as humans walk or run using their feet, fish swim using their fins, birds fly using their wings.
Can you hold your breath for a few hours? Of course not, right? Living things have various respiratory
organs. Humans breathe using the lungs, fish using their gills, insects using their trachea, and plants
using stomata. All living things need air. Air is used for breathing. Air is a gaseous object. Gas for
breathing is oxygen. When we breathe take oxygen. Then we exhale carbon dioxide.
Have you ever felt hungry? When we are hungry, we may find it difficult to concentrate and the
body becomes weak. What about animals? Animals also need food. There are animals that eat plants.
There are also animals that eat other animals. Plants can make their own food. The process of plants
making food is called photosynthesis.
Humans, animals and plants need food. Food is very useful for humans. Because from food,
humans can sustain life. We eat three times a day; at morning, at afternoon, and at evening. The food
we eat must be nutritionally balanced. These foods contain substances that the body needs. There are
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins. Now, list the examples in this table below about
carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamin that you can find from your daily food.
All living things need food and water. Humans and animals will die if they do not eat and drink.
Plants will die of drought if they don't get water.

- Types of Animals based on its food
Animals eat many types of food. Based on the type of food, animals are classified into 3 types:
1. Herbivores are the animals that only eat plants. For example, grasshoppers, cows, horses,
elephants.
2. Carnivores are the animals that only eat meat or other animals. For example, crocodiles, snakes,
eagles.
3. Omnivores are the animals that both eat meat and plants. For example, chicken and duck.
Self-Practice
Then, make a mind map in your IPA textbook about the types of animals based on its food.
4. It can grow
Do you still have your photos when you were babies? When you were a baby, your body was small.
Now, your body is bigger. Your body is also taller. It shows that you are experiencing growth. Humans
also experience growth. Its growth is characterized by the change of height body. Increasing weight.
Form changing physical body. For example, the young has the size of the clothes small. But, when you
are growi to become an adult, you are not using the same clothes. Look at this picture below!
Animals and plant also grow bigger. You can see the growth of animals and plants. The pictures
show that living things experience growth. Growth is characterized by a change in shape and size.
Preparing at home
Now, you are going to see your own growth starting when you were baby, 1 year old, 5-year-old

Living things can reproduce. To reproduce means to have children or re-generate. Human can
reproduce. For example, mothers give birth to children. Animals reproduce in many ways. Some breed
by laying eggs. There are also those that reproduce by giving birth. Plants also reproduce. In general,
plants reproduce by seed. Plants’ seeds will be found in flowers. Even tough, there are also plants that
reproduce by budding (bertunas). Have you ever looked at banana trees? Banana tree is one of the
plants that reproduce by budding.
