Mathematics is an important part of managing business.

Business and Maths go together

because business deals with money and money encompasses everything in itself. At some point,
here is a need for everyone to manage money or take decisions which requires everyone to know
mathematics. Business mathematics is used by commercial enterprises to record and manage
business operations. Commercial organizations use mathematics in accounting, inventory
management, marketing, sales forecasting, and financial analysis. It helps you know the financial
formulas, fractions; measurements involved in interest calculation, hire rates, salary
calculation, tax calculation etc. which help complete business tasks efficiently. Business
mathematics also includes sequences, series and geometric and arithmetic progressions in
business and economic.

In mathematics, a sequence is an enumerated collection of objects in which repetitions

are allowed. Like a set, it contains members. The number of elements is called the length of the
sequence. Unlike a set, the same elements can appear multiple times at different positions in a
sequence, and order matters. In other words, a sequence can be defined as a function whose
domain is either the set of the natural numbers or the set of the first n natural numbers. A
sequence can be thought of as a list of elements with a particular order. Sequences are useful in a
number of mathematical disciplines for studying functions, spaces, and other mathematical
structures using the convergence properties of sequences. In particular, sequences are the basis
for series, which are important in differential equations and analysis. Sequences are also of
interest in their own right and can be studied as patterns or puzzles, such as in the study of prime
numbers. A good example is The sequence {1,2,4,8,16}, is a geometric sequence with common
ratio 2, since each term is obtained from the preceding one by doubling.   The sequence
{9,3,1,1/3}, is a geometric sequence with common ratio 1/3.

A series can be finite (with a finite number of terms) or infinite. In order to reduce the
writing of a series, we use the summation symbol (see section : The summation symbol). In the
case of a geometric series, the terms of the sum are those of a geometric sequence. Eample,
Write the following using the summation symbol: 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + … + 128 and the solution is

the terms of the sum are those of the geometric sequence {1 , 2 , 4 , 8 , … , 128 }   The initial
term of the suite is a = 1 and its common ratio is r = 2 (since each term is double the preceding
term). All terms can be represented by the relation.
In an arithmetic sequence, the difference between any two consecutive terms is
constant. The constant difference is commonly known as common difference and is denoted by d.
Let us understand this with one example. Let’s check whether the given sequence is A.P:  1, 3, 5,
7, 9, 1. To check if the given sequence is A.P or not, we must first prove that the difference
between the consecutive terms is constant. So, d = 3 – 1 = 2 equal to 5 – 3 = 2

 If l = 20, d = -1 and n = 17, then the first term is?

Given: l = 20, d = -1, n = 17

We need to find a. By using l = a + (n – 1)d,
∴ 20 = a + (17 – 1) -1
20 = a – 17
a = 36

Some of the benefits of sequences, series and geometric and arithmetic progressions are as
follows, helps us to have analytical thinking. We could define it as the thought directed to
decompose the arguments in its premises or expressions that compose it, to see the relations that
exist between them and their conclusion, in order to judge its veracity or reliability of the same.
Mathematics quickens our minds and helps us, in general, to deepen and think when we are faced
with complex problems. Our life is composed largely of situations of choice, approach, reasoning
and facing problems to which solutions have to be found. Mathematics is essential in order not to
lose money. When a bunch of credulous people spends money on various pyramid schemes,
thinking that they will make a fortune, they do so primarily because their math is not their
strongest side. In particular, if you are the least bit familiar with statistics and calculations of
interest, in a very easy way you will recognize the economic fraud and sellers of fog. With the
help of science like mathematics, you will avoid a waste of money on various projects and tips
that you believe can help you. Mathematics develops the ability to think because to find the
solutions, you have to think of a whole coherent process. It could be said that mathematics is
fundamental in the education of children since math teaches them to think.
