CE 324 Test 2 Solution

Part A: Short Answers

Question 1: Wind generated waves records can be analyzed in two methods. Briefly state and discuss
the methods?

Solution:
I. Time domain Analysis - Makes use of the up crossing or down crossing technique to derive wave
parameters from a wave record. The distribution of wave heights is often assumed to follow Rayleigh
distribution.
II. Frequency domain Analysis – Direct application of the Fourier series representation. Any unidirectional
sea state can be described mathematically as being composed of an infinite series of sine waves of varying
amplitude and frequency.
Time-domain analysis shows how a wave changes over time, Frequency-domain analysis shows how the wave's
energy is distributed over a range of frequencies.

Question 2: Discuss the difference fetch limited and duration limited.

Solution:
Fetch Limited waves: If 𝑡 > 𝑡 Both wave height and period will increase along the fetch. The wave
conditions at 𝑥 = 𝐹 will depend on the wind speed, 𝑈 and the length of the fetch. Wave energy can be
limited by breaking due to water depth or wave steepness.
Duration Limited waves: If 𝑡 < 𝑡 wave generation ceases before waves can propagate the entire fetch
length. The wave conditions at 𝑥 = 𝐹 will depend on the wind speed, 𝑈 and the length of the fetch.

Part B: Calculation

Question 1: A vertical cylindrical structural member with diameter 1meter is installed at a site where
water depth is 150m and the mean current is negligible. The design wave for the structural member has
a height of 8 meters and a period of 12 seconds with calculated wave length of 224.7meters.

Calculate the horizontal wave force on the structural member when the surface elevation is 60 degrees
with the horizontal axis.

Use: 𝑆𝑒𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 1027𝑘𝑔𝑚 and 𝐾𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 1.36 ∗ 10 𝑚 /𝑠

Solution:

1. Check if Morrison equation is applicable and calculate wave number

= = 0.004 < 0.2 𝑘= = = 0.028
. .
2. Verify if wave is in deep, transitional or shallow water and calculate horizontal velocity.
= = 0.67 (Deep water) 𝑢 = = 2.1𝑚𝑠 𝑢 = 𝑒( . ∗( )
= 0.03𝑚𝑠
.

3. Calculate Reynolds number

∗ . ∗ ∗ . ∗
𝑅𝑒 = = = 1544117.6 𝑅𝑒 = = = 23223.22
. ∗ . ∗
4. Determine drag and moment of Inertia coefficient from table.
At: = 0 : 𝐶 = 0.6 − 0.7 𝐶 = 1.5
At: 𝑧 = −𝑑 𝐶 = 1.2 𝐶 =2
5. Calculate the total horizontal wave load on the structural member.
𝐹 = 𝐶 𝜌𝐷 ∫ 𝑢 |𝑢|𝑑𝑧 + 𝜌𝐶 ∫ 𝑎𝑥 𝑑𝑧

= ∗ 1.2 ∗ 1027 ∗ 1 ∗ ∫ 𝑒 cos 𝜃 𝑒 cos(𝜃) 𝑑𝑧 + 1027 ∗ 2 ∗ ∫ 𝑒 sin(𝜃) 𝑑𝑧

= 616.2 ∗ ( ) cos 𝜃 |cos(𝜃)| ∫ 𝑒 𝑑𝑧 + 1612.2 ∗ sin(𝜃) ∗ ∫ 𝑒 𝑑𝑧

1 ∗ 1
= 616.2 ∗ ( ) cos 𝜃 |cos(𝜃)| ∗
2𝑘
1 − 𝑒−2𝑘𝑑 + 1612.2 ∗ sin(𝜃) ∗
𝑘
1 − 𝑒−𝑘𝑑
= 48286.36 cos 𝜃 |cos(𝜃)| + 62197.07 sin(𝜃)

At angle 60 degrees, the total wave load is:

𝐹 = 48286.36 cos(60) |cos(60)| + 62197.07 sin(60) = 12071.6 + 53864.2 = 65935.8𝑁 = 65.94𝑘𝑁
