TEACHER'S NAME:
KARLA VALLES

LEVEL: ADVANCED 11
Student reflection:
On the first unit we started analyzing articles related to
animals, they debated if they are truly intelligent or they act
just by instinct. The first article was "Extreme perception
and animal intelligence "studied a general view of how
animals can be trained to develop their abilities, on the other
hand, the other article was "How smart are animals?" there
experts gave an opinion very elaborated and analyzed. In the
second part of the unit, we learned more vocabulary related
to cognition and perception. then, we ended up by studying
grammar, identifying adjective clauses and paraphrasing. In
the next part of this unit we studied adjective suffixes that
can have different endings like -ar, -y. -ese, etc. also, we
contrasted the simple past, present perfect, and present
perfect continuous, while we were studying vocabulary
related to the unit. Finally, for grammar we studied
concessions and how to recognize persuasive language and
analyzed vocabulary related to the unit of making a change
like challenge, donate, manage, etc.

WH QUESTIONS
What signs do dogs give to prevent seizures?
They actually perceive certain signs ahead of time and help to prevent it in this
way.
What is the main idea or thesis? What issues are discussed?
The difference between animal intelligence and extreme perception. It seems
that this topic has been in controversy for a long time because it’s hard to
know if animals are intelligent or not.

Who wrote the text?

Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson
Who is Connie Standly?
The owner of two seizure dogs in Florida

When do we know that an animal is intelligent?

When they recognize cues and do something about it.
When the seizure dogs alert?
Before something happens by barking or taking people to a safe place as in the
example of Connie.

Where can we see this extreme perception of animals?

We can see it anywhere because most animals have it.
Where did the Clever Hans come from?
The horse is from Germany.

Why is it so difficult to test animal intelligence?

Because we use human standards to assess their intelligence.
Why was this article written?
To inform and let us know about animals and how their own intelligence
works I think.
How to know if an animal is intelligent?
When they can read human behavior and by observing subtle cues and
learning a way to respond or act on those cues.
How good are dogs sniffing contraband?
They’re three times better than X-ray machines to detect contraband by
sniffing.

Writing 1

In the first reading, "Extreme perception and animal intelligence" by Temple Grandin and
Catherine Jhonson, they talked about how intelligent animals are. Apparently, they're
smarter than everyone thought, so the lecture gave us multiple examples to prove it.

The first example was the seizure alert dogs and their behavior, trained to develop and
improve unique skills that they already have unconsciously,so that they can help people
before a seizure happens and achieve their mission that is to take care of people who need
it.
Another example's Clever Hans, who was a horse who could count and thanks to that,
started to catch people's attention and be criticized for that ability. Still, a psychologist
studied that case and concluded that the horse was not counting, but comparing it to
nowadays, there isn't a case similar to Clever Hans showing us that animals are not just
bodies without reasoning; there are more than that.

Other example that we can find, and something that the author mentions, is how good dogs
are at sniffing contraband, and mitigating the consequences of drug trafficking in so many
countries, showing again how animals help in society with their perceptions, and they exist
not only as pets.

With all these mentions and beliefs that the authors talked about, they are telling us how
vital animals and their skills have been in our lives since so many years ago for
entertainment, work, or to discover or see things humans cannot but also it shows the
controversy about if they’re intelligent or not . So this article shows us why it is so
important to consider them and achieve that goal.

ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE?

In the first reading "Extreme perception and animal intelligence" by

Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson, they talked about how
intelligent animals are. About how apparently animals seem to be more
intelligent than they thought, based on that, the lecture gave us multiple
examples to prove it.

The first example which the reading gave us, was about the seizure alert
dogs and their behavior, trained to develop and improve unique skills
that they already have unconsciously, so they can help people before a
seizure happens and also to achieve their mission, that is to take care
people who need it.
Another example is about Clever Hans, who was a horse that could count
and thanks to that, Clever started to catch the people's attention and be
criticized for that ability. Still, a psychologist studied that case and
concluded that the horse was not counting, but comparing it to nowadays,
there is not a case similar to Clever Hans, showing us that animals are not
just bodies without reasoning, they are more than that.

Other example that we can find, and something that the author mentions,
is how good dogs are at sniffing contraband and mitigating the
consequences of drug trafficking in so many countries, showing us again
how animals help in society when we need it most with their perceptions
and cognition to prove that they not only exist as pets.

With all these mentions and beliefs that the authors talked about, they are
telling us how vital are animals, besides their skills have been around us
since so many years ago for entertainment, work, or to discover or see
obvious things that humans cannot but it also shows the controversy
about if they are intelligent or not. So, this article explain why it is so
important to consider them, and they achieved that goal.

My life in 2175

I was waking up by the noise of my alarm that sounds like the loudest trumpet  in the
world, it seems like a dream, with the drops of water falling through the  window I
was watching the New York city , I was shocked for a sec, but then I realized How
much has changed in my life during all this 169 years. 153 years  have passed since I
was 16 and discover about my immortality. So many years, so many stories, so many
people, so many jobs, but I'm still here with my cat and dog in the city of the kings as
my teenage  self always dreamed about, but nothing is what it seems.

A lot of decades ago  when I was 22 I graduated from university as an architect, that
day my smile was as bright  as the sun, so bright that could light up the whole city, but
now it's sad to remember that moment because now I noticed that it has been the most
boring thing I have done for the last 120 years|as boring as snails and I think that it
was the  reason for my retirement ultimately, but all of us get bored of something at
some point right?, but honestly I don't regret it, because I designed it many famous
buildings inside this big city and in so many countries, likewise everything ends and
that's what happened. I'm not going to lie, I have been feeling very nice since I retired
and also because I have left my marks in this changing and crazy world.
My life has been changing radically year by year thanks to my job, that's why I don't
have kids, but it's something that I've never wanted to do being honest, but that was
the reason I have been married more than 10 times with different men from different
countries and having children was a dream for them, but it wasn't my dream. I'm
happy with my cats and dogs, they make me happy and leave all my stress and
loveless away. My parents live in Peru and my brother in the UK because in his youth
he used to be a football player, he was very famous there so he has gone out of Peru to
live there, my parents were never worrisome or utterly strict with us, that's why they
left us follow what we were passionate about and study outside of Peru.Being with my
parents alive it's something I love of living so long because it's worth it even though
I've became a chilly person.

Something that I don't like about living so long is that you  get bored easily by so
many things and even though you try to do new things, you get bored with them too,
because you have so many time for everything and life always ends up as a routine.
But you learn a lot since all of use are immortal. You become more tolerable and also
learn to think before acting which makes you more emphatic with your decisions, and
it's something awesome.
