Activity 3
The INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
I. Introduction
The organs of the integumentary system include the skin and its
accessory structures-hair, nails, and glands, as well as blood vessels,
muscles and nerves.. The integument can also be thought of as a
cutaneous membrane that covers the outer surface of the body. It is the
largest organ by surface area and weight. Its area is about 2 square meters
(22 square feet) and weighs 4.5–5kgs (10–11 lbs), about 16% of body
weight. It is 0.5–4 mm thick, thinnest part is on the eyelids and the thickest
is on the heels. We lose almost a kg of skin epithelium a year that becomes
a major part of household “dust”. (Tortora and Derrickson, 2011)
II. Objectives:
At the end of this activity, the students will be able to
1. review the following:
a. Anatomy of the Skin
142
b. Function of each part
c. Accessory structures of the skin;
2. differentiate thick from thin skin microscopically; and
3. classify burns based on depth and body surface area (BSA).
III. Materials:
References in Anatomy and Physiology and Histology
IV. Procedure:
1. Based on the pictures below, differentiate thick skin from thin
skin. At least 5 major difference

2. Differentiate the classification of burns based on:
Layers
involved
Characteristic
Appearance
Period of
healing
145
3. Using flow charts describe the phases of wound healing. Include
the cells that are involved in each phase and the time
146
5. A Medical technologist is about to perform venipuncture in an
adult patient. In order, what layers of the skin will be
traversed by the needle form outside to inside? Include the
epidermal layers.
