Grade 9 Lesson Plan in Mathematics

April 15, 2023

Content Standards:
 The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of parallelograms and triangle
similarity.
Performance Standards:
 The learner able to investigate, analyze, and solve problems involving parallelograms and
triangle similarity through appropriate and accurate representation.
Learning Competency:
 The learner solves problems that involve triangle similarity and right triangles
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the learners will be able to:
 apply the Pythagorean theorem in finding distance
 recognize the importance of Pythagorean theorem in our lives as an easy way of
finding measurements and distance
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Solve Problem Involving Right Triangle Using the Pythagorean Theorem
Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9 (page 327-329)
Material: Laptop, Tablet, Projector and Portable Wi-Fi

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activity
1.Prayer
2.Attentance
3.Review

Questions:
1. Are you familiar with the right triangle? Can you show it?

Activity: “BODY LANGUAGE”

The teacher will ask three volunteers from the class to show a right triangle using their
body parts. After the students show the figure, the teacher will ask these following
questions:
 Are they showing the right triangle?
 How can you prove that the figure shown was right triangle?
 In a right triangle, we have 3 sides, if the other side is missing, how can
you find the value?

4. Motivation

“SCRAMBLE ME”

Instruction: Each of the student will be given a tablet to use in this activity. Identify each
scrambled words base on the definition given and write it on the box at the right. There
will be a time limit on each of the questions that you will answer.

1. PTARGAYHEON -

: The sum of the squares of the sides of a right triangle equals the square of its
hypotenuse (a2+b2 = c2)

2. HOPEYUTNSE -

: The longest side of a right triangle and the opposite of right angle.

3. TGINLARE -
: A closed, 2-dimentional shape with 3 sides, 3 angles, and 3 vertices.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Activity (Group Activity)

Instruction: The class will be divided into 2 groups. Each group has a problem to solve
and they will present there answer through news, poem, rhyme or rap.

Group 1
James plan to visit Sarah but he wants to use the shorter way to reach Sarah’s
house which is the street C. James ask if how far is Sarah’s house from his house?

Group 2

You’re locked out of your house and the only open window is on the second floor,
20 feet above the ground. You need to borrow a ladder from one of your
neighbors. There is a bush along the edge of the house, so you’ll have to place the
ladder 15 feet from the house. What length of ladder do you need to reach the
window?

2.Analysis
1. How was your activity? Did you find the missing measure?
2. What concept did you used to answer the problem?
3. Is this activity can help us in our daily activities? Can you give me another
scenario?
4. In your activity, what did you observe on each situation? What shape that
the figure show?

3. Abstraction

“Solving Problem Involving Right Triangle Using the Pythagorean Theorem”

Problem 1.

Two lovers broke up and left MCDO at the same time, one heading due
south and the other headed due west. After 30 minutes of dramatic walking, the
one heading south traveled a distance of 8 meters and the one heading west
covered 6 meters. What is the shortest distance between the two ex-lovers as they
decided to move on from each other?
4.Application (Board Work)

Illustrate the given scenario and solve the following word problem.

1. A 10 ft. bamboo ladder is place against the wall with its bae 3 ft. from the
wall. Find the height from the top of the bamboo ladder to the ground.

2. The diagonal of a rectangle measures 26cm and one of its side measures
24 cm, find the length of the other side.

IV. Evaluation (Quiz)

Test 1. Multiple Choice

1. Which equation represents the Pythagorean theorem?

a. c=a+b
b. c 2 = a + b2
c. c2 = a2 + b2
d. c2 = a2 + b

2. The hypotenuse refers to which side of right Triangle?

a. Shorter side
b. Longest side
c. First side
d. Second side

3. A 35-foot ladder id leaning against the side of a building and is positioned such that the
base of the ladder id 21 feet from the base of the building. How Far above the ground is
the point where the ladder touches the building?

a. 25 feet
b. 26 feet
c. 27 feet
d. 28 feet

4. An anchor line for a tower needs to be replaced. The tower is 96ft tall. The anchor line is
105 ft long. How far from the tower can it be placed, to the nearest foot?

a. 42 ft
b. 43 ft
c. 42.5 ft
d. 43. 5 ft

Test II. Solving Word Problem.

5. Bong travels 24 km towards east from his house, then he turned his left and covers
another 10 km. Find out his total displacement?
V. Assignment

Performance Task: Every group will create a scenario or situation that is related on
Pythagorean Theorem and perform it in different ways (Dancing, singing, acting, broad casting and
etc). The performance will be rated based on rubrics and with a maximum of 3mins presentation.
