1 GENERAL
The digitally stored original is electronically approved.

Type tests have been performed on prorated sections of metal-oxide (MO) surge arresters type PEXLIM P-Z.
The sections were tested in accordance with the standards for MO surge arresters,
IEC 60099-4/Ed 3.0 2014-06.
A manual signature is not required.

The following tests have been performed (Clause No:s refer to the above-mentioned standard):

- Power-frequency reference voltage test. Clause 7.2 (This test is used to determine the rated voltage of
the test sections for design tests involving demonstration of thermal recovery).
- Power-frequency voltage-versus-time test (TOV test). Clause 10.8.8
Tables and oscillograms are presented from the different tests.

2 POWER-FREQUENCY REFERENCE VOLTAGE TEST AND DATA FOR TEST SAMPLES

The reference current for PEXLIM P-Z MO arresters is defined at a peak value of 3 mA of the resistive
component of power frequency current. The reference voltage (Uref) is the peak value of power frequency
voltage divided by √2 measured at the reference current. The resistive current may be slightly asymmetrical
in this current region. The reference voltage, therefore, is always defined as the minimum voltage measured
at the reference current independent of polarity.
The reference voltage measured at 23 ± 5 °C is checked on all complete assembled arrester units and must
be equal to or higher than the nominal rated voltage, (Ur). Furthermore, the reference voltage test is used to
determine rated voltage of prorated test sections. The rated voltage of a prorated section is determined as
Ur = Uref in order to ensure that the prorated section is exposed to higher than or equal stresses than any
complete arrester.
An oscillogram from a Power-frequency reference voltage test is shown in Figure 1 below. Section rated
7.56 kVrms. (Maximum resistive current occurs by definition at the peak of the voltage wave and maximum
capacitive component at voltage zero.)

Figure 1. Reference voltage test.

Table 1 shows the electrical data and dimensions for the 8 test sections. The sections consisted of one MO
resistor (7.2 kV block). The dimensions of the MO resistor was D=73.8 mm, H=42.5 mm.

The sections were cut from complete PEXLIM P-Z surge arresters. The sections, therefore, represent true
cross sections of a complete surge arrester and thus also dielectrically prorated test sections. For all tests
involving check of thermal recovery the sections were additionally thermally insulated at top and bottom ends
as shown in Enclosure page 2 in order to represent true thermal models of the complete surge arrester.

The thermally prorated sections for arrester type PEXLIM P-Z are verified by tests reported in HVP/AK 17-44
which states a starting temperature of at least 72.2 °C in the thermal recovery tests.
A manual signature is not required.

Drawing for the MO resistors (block) is 5681 018-701 (7.2 kV block).

3 LONG-DURATION IMPULSES BEFORE APPLICATION OF TOV

In case of “prior duty” before application of temporary overvoltage (TOV), the test sections shall be subjected
to the rated thermal energy during 3 minutes by one or more long-duration current impulse or by unipolar
sine half-wave current impulses. Two long-duration current impulses spaced 50 to 60 s were selected to give
the required rated thermal energy of 11 kJ/kV rated voltage. The long-duration current impulses applied had
a 90 % to 90 % value of 2.95 ms.

4 TOV TEST IN TIME RANGE 0.1 TO 1 SECONDS

4.1 TOV “without prior duty”

The test was performed on section 1 as per Table 1. The section was placed in an oven and preheated to
72.2 +5/-0 °C. After reaching the preheating temperature, the section was rapidly brought to the test chamber
which had an ambient temperature of 20 ± 5 °C and subjected to a TOV. Immediately after the TOV the
voltage was decreased to a level not less than Uc which was applied during 30 minutes to verify thermal
stability. Power losses and leakage current of the MO resistors were measured continuously to prove thermal

results are equal to or better than the specified capability.
Before and after the complete TOV test the residual voltage at 20 kA 8/20 µs and the reference voltage were
measured to indicate any possible changes in the arrester performance. Test result is shown in Table 10. An
oscillogram from the residual voltage test is shown on oscillogram page 1. In addition two further impulses,

The information contained in this document has to be kept strictly confidential.

According to the standard, clause 10.8.8.5, the test shall be performed with current impulses of amplitude
resulting in a current density of at least 0.5 kA/cm2 or in 2 times the nominal current whichever is lower.
Current density of 0.5 kA/cm2 corresponds to 21.4 kA for the tested MO resistors. The result is shown in

TEST CIRCUIT - INSTRUMENT SPECIFICATION

A detailed specification with measuring instruments and the different test circuits, designated 1-9, is
available on request. For each circuit the main components are shown by a sketch in which also all
instruments for measuring of voltages, currents and temperatures could be identified in this
specification. In a belonging "Equipment and Instrument Table" all important data concerning the used
instruments as type identification, accuracy and calibration intervals are listed. Note! All test circuits in
the specification can not necessarily be referred to the test report. The specification is used as a basic
document for all test reports on surge arresters, and therefore contains a summary of all frequently
used test circuits.

The described specification “Test circuits and instrument specifications for Surge arrester laboratory”,
has document No. HVP AK 2979, revision H.
