Dear Students
Welcome to second year courses in the Faculty! We hope you have had a restful, peaceful, healthy and
safe festive season.
We start the first teaching block of 2021 still facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and still
needing to be vigilant in adhering to the prevention measures of wearing a mask covering your mouth
and nose, practicing hand hygiene, minimizing your social contacts and observing social distancing at
all times.
We have considered many options in developing the academic program for this first block and thank you
for your patience during this time. Due to the importance of dissection for your studies, the course
coordinators and Faculty have decided that you will return to campus to take part in weekly dissections
from the first teaching block.
The first teaching block begins on the 29th January 2021 with the Faculty Welcome Day. The links for the
online Welcome Day event on the Faculty’s YouTube channel will be communicated to you separately.
The academic activities of the first block begin on the 1st February but, due to the nature of the activities
in this week, you will not need to be present on campus until the week of the 8th February. Please note
that this week will include synchronous online sessions (i.e. meetings) which you are expected to attend.
During these sessions the course coordinators will orientate you to the academic activities for each course
and what is expected of you as well as provide important information, such as the prescribed books. It is
therefore extremely important that you attend these online sessions. Further information on the
sessions, including the length of the synchronous sessions and meeting links, will be provided by the
course coordinators next week, but please ensure that you are available during the Synchronous session
times marked on the Week 1 timetable attached.
Please also note the Student success sessions that will be held during the first week to orientate you to
Wits-e and Library resources as well as services offered by OSS and discuss study skills for second year.
While some of these topics might feel familiar, we strongly encourage you to attend these sessions to
ensure that you can adjust quickly to second year and have the best possible start to the year.
From the 8th February, you will be expected to be on campus once a week to attend a 2 hour dissection
session during block 1. Should the state of the pandemic allow it, on campus sessions for other courses
will be added as appropriate. Please take note of the weekly timetable (below) which will be used during
block 1. The groups and dissection days will be communicated during the first week of the block. Please
also note that each course will arrange online, synchronous sessions on Mondays and/ or Fridays
according to the allocated time slots. While these sessions may not take place each week, please do not
arrange other activities for these times and be prepared to attend according to the schedules that the
course coordinators will communicate.

For the weekly timetable, please note:
• The majority of the academic activities continue online and asynchronously. This timetable
indicates the oncampus (dissection) or online synchronous sessions. When you are not attending
such a session you are expected to be working through the provided course materials. Please
refer to course timetables, provided in the first week, for an indication of which topics you are
expected to work through each week and the submission dates for any assessments.
• Monday and Friday synchronous sessions may or may not occur each week, according to the
timetable provided by the course coordinator. The Physiology tutorials will not occur weekly.
Timetables will be communicated to you.
We wish you well for the start of the academic year. Should you have any questions please contact
[email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you to the Health Sciences campus from the
8th February.
Take care
