LESSON 1: REALISTIC AND ABSTRACT PRINTING

This is the first lesson of the quarter where

you are expected to differentiate realistic and
abstract print.

The essential question that will answered in this

lesson is:

What is the difference between realistic and abstract print?

Let’s Get Started

__________________________________________________

Have you ever done printing using natural objects? What are these objects
from nature that can be used for printing? How about the man-made objects?
Can you name some of them?

I will show you examples of natural objects that can seen around us.
Will you please tell me what are these?

Natural objects or materials like twigs, leaves, stalks and rocks are the
materials that come from nature.

How about these objects, can you name them?

The ruler, umbrella and school bag are examples of man-made objects.
They are the materials obtained from natural materials through chemical processes.

REALISTIC AND ABSTRACT PRINTING

Printmaking is a process of transferring or reproducing text and images typically

with ink on paper or in other materials. Using both material and man-made objects or
materials, you can do printing.

In print-making, whatever kind of material you should use,

you may do your print realistically or in abstract design.
In doing so, you have to give emphasis on colors and shapes.

But what is the difference between the two?

Realistic printing depicts subjects as they appear to the human eye.

Abstract printing does not attempt to depict subjects as they appear to the
human eye. Instead, it looks to use shapes, color, forms and textures.

Abstract art can look realistic, using shadow and 3d images but it’s not how you
would see the subject in real life.

Look at the examples and see their differences.

6|(MODULE 3 – ARTS 3) TUMCSI

Did you see the difference? Very good!

Now, it is your time to perform on your own.

STENCIL-PRINTING

Stenciling is a printmaking method used to produce multiple images/designs in t-

shirts, bags, handkerchiefs and other things. Stencil art or stenciling is printing of
repeated designs by making ink, paint or wax pass-through holes or cuts in a piece of
cardboard or metal.

Look at the examples below.

MATERIALS USED IN STENCIL-PRINTING

As a Grade 3 student, you may use the following materials for your stencil art .

HOW TO STENCIL PRINT

Stencil printing is a less expensive, cleaner, and a simpler alternative to screen

printing. It is an easy way for you to print an image, or several images,
repeatedly on a surface, like a poster or a t-shirt.  Even better, unlike screen
printing, stencil printing doesn't require you to use any smelly chemicals!
All you need are a few supplies, an image you want to transfer,
and a little bit of effort. Before long you'll have a stencil,
14 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
you can use to print your image as much as you desire

Making Your Stencil

1. Brainstorm your stencil ideas. If you plan on creating an original design, you might
want to take a piece of paper and a pencil to sketch out some concept designs. If you
plan on using a pre-made image, like one used by your favorite artist, video game, or
TV show, you should find a high-resolution copy of the image. High resolution images
will result in crisper, cleaner stencils.

2. Create your design. This can be easily done on a computer with image editing
software, like Adobe Photoshop or MS Paint. You might import an image from online or
your personal image library and make some modifications to it with your editing
software, or you might use your own original artwork. If you don't have a printer, you
can always look into how to make a stencil by hand.

3. Print your design. You should print your image in black and white on a sturdy piece of
paper, like card stock or posterboard. Depending on your printer, you may be able to cut

15 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
a piece of white posterboard or card stock down to the size of a normal sheet of paper
and use it in your printer as you would normally.

4. Cut your stencil free of the paper. Take your utility knife and cut around the perimeter
of the black areas of your image. Try to cut in an unbroken line around the perimeter to
limit the number of touch-ups you'll need to make at the end. If you need to cut through
the blank space surrounding your image, cut a thin line from the border of the page to
the perimeter of your image, then cut the image free by following its perimeter.

16 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
Using Your Stencil

1. Position your substrate. The best place to apply your stencil is a clean, sturdy,
flat surface, like a table, desk, or counter. Make sure your substrate and surface
are both clean before placing it onto your surface.

2. Decide between positive and negative stencils . Before you go any further, you'll have
to figure out which stencil you'll be using: the positive (white) or negative (black).
Positive stencils are great for letters and outlines. They also give the appearance of your
image being part of the background of your shirt. Negative stencils are better for figures
and details. Negative stenciled images will appear to be in the foreground of your shirt.

17 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
3. Mark your stencil placement with painter's tape . This is especially important for your
negative stencil, as you will not have the border of your page to orient your stencil as
you will with your positive stencil. Using small pieces of painter's tape, mark the
placement of your stencils.

4. Place your stencil. Hold your substrate free of its surface and allow it to hang
naturally in your hands. While holding the substrate, check to see that your painter's
tape guides are even and straight; small errors will result in a skewed or uneven image.
Return your substrate to its surface and correct any errors in tape placement, then align
your stencil with your tape guides.

18 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
5. Paint your stencil. If you're using the positive stencil, you'll be painting its inside. If
you're using the negative stencil, you'll be painting the outside. In either case, it doesn't
matter if you get paint on your stencil. You should not, however, get paint under the
stencil; this will result in the border of your design being irregular and not looking clean.

6. Wait for your paint to dry completely . Removing your stencils before the paint is
completely dry can result in paint-smear. Be patient while waiting for your stenciled
image to dry. To speed this process, you might use a hair dryer or low intensity fan
directed at the drying paint.

19 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
2. Remove your stencil or add another coat . When your paint is fully dry, peel one edge
of your stencil carefully away from your substrate. Do not remove your stencil
completely at this point. With your stencil still mostly attached to your substrate, check
the first layer of paint you used for your stencil design. If it looks thin or light in color,
reattach the corner of the stencil you've peeled away and apply another coat of paint.

3. Add finishing touches with a paintbrush . Now that your paint is dry, you can add
artistic touches to your design. Especially if the negative space where you applied your
20 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
paint is lacking in color or personality, use your paints and a brush to add personal
touches to the design.

4. Dry your finishing touches and enjoy . You can do this in the same fashion you did
previously. Either wait until the paint is dry or speed the process along with a blow
dryer. When the paint of your finishing touches is dry, your stencil printing project is
complete.

Now, you are ready for the task

21 | ( M O D U L E 3 – A R T S 3 ) TUMCSI
ACTIVITY TIME !

Perform stencil-printing now. You may ask the help of an older member of your
family especially in cutting the pattern.

Materials:
Any cardboard for the cut-out pattern, cutter, scotch tape, 1/8 illustration board,
brush, sponge, acrylic or poster paint or acrylic, ribbon, stickers etc.

What to do:

1st step: Print out or have an outline of letters of your nickname.

2nd step: Cut out the leters. This will be used as your stencil pattern.

3rd step: Position the cut out stencil to the illustration board.
You may put scotch tape so that it will not be moved.

4th step: Color the stencil pattern using sponge or brush. Let it dry.
Then slowly remove the pattern stencil.

5th step: Put a ribbon lace on top. Hang it on your wall.

How to submit:

1. Upload a picture of your output in a close up top view.

2. Another picture holding your project.
3. Write in cursive 4-5 sentence description about your project.

LESSON 4: DUPLICATING DESIGNS

In this lesson you are now going to duplicate

the design that you created in the previous
lesson. You will also explain the thought behind
your chosen design.

The essential question that will be answered in this

lesson is: How can you duplicate designs?

Let’s Get Started

DUPLICATING STENCIL DESIGNS

Stencils are especially used in cases that you want to print more than one design.
Thus, stencil art can be duplicated either by hand or by machine. Of course, it would
easier

if we use machines. But if machines are not available, we can always use our creative
hands. In duplicating your design, make sure that your stencil pattern that you first used
before is strill durable and in good quality. In this case, your next products
will be a success.
