Conflict in Romeo and Juliet

Conflict is a literary element that involves a struggle between two opposing forces, usually a protagonist
and an antagonist. Conflict can be internal or external.

1. Person vs. Person – Characters conflicts, whether between heroes and villains or sparring
lovers.

2. Person vs. The Supernatural – Conflicts with vampires, werewolves, aliens, and ghosts or
typically unbelievable, supernatural, or inexplicable phenomena.

3. Person vs. Nature – A character against some force of nature such as animal or the weather.

4. Person vs. Him/Herself – A character battling the bad/good side of themselves, or when they
simply wanted to be a better person.

5. Person vs. Technology – Conflict between characters and the results of scientific discovery.

6. Person vs. Society – A character is victimized by society; tradition, an institution, or law.

1. Person vs. Person  Act 1 Scene 1 lines 43-78


 There was a street fight between
Montague and Capulet. It started
with Sampson, from Capulet,
biting his thumb at Abram, from
Montague.
 Act 1 Scene 5 lines 61-103
 Romeo was admiring the beauty
of Juliet when her cousin, Tybalt,
recognized his voice and wanted
a fight. Capulet came and
stopped Tybalt from wanting to
fight Romeo. The uncle and
nephew had a little argument.
 Act 3 Scene 1 lines 74-92
 Tybalt came to find Romeo, still
wanting to fight him. Mercutio
protect and defend his friend by
fighting Tybalt for him.
Unfortunately, Mercutio was
stabbed by Tybalt and he passed
away. Then Tybalt left the place
with his company.
 Act 3 Scene 1 lines 127-137
 When Tybalt came back, Romeo
charged at him and killed him.
This was a revenge that Romeo
made for his friend Mercutio.

 Romeo told Benvolio and
Mercutio about the dream he
had last night. Mercutio replied
by saying the Queen Mab, a fairy
of dreams, visited Romeo.
3. Person vs. Nature  Act 2 Scene 2 lines 112-116
 While speaking to each other at
the garden, Romeo swore by the
moon and Juliet did not agree.
She said the moon changes its
shapes and he did not want their
love for each other change.
4. Person vs. Him/Herself  Act 3 Scene 1 line 142
 Romeo called himself ‘Fortune’s
fool’ after killing Tybalt. He did
not mean to kill Tybalt for he is
Juliet’s cousin but after the man
killed Mercutio, Romeo lost his
control. He was panic because if
the Prince caught him, he will
die.
5. Person vs. Technology  Act 3 Scene 1
 Both Mercutio and Tybalt were
killed by swords.

6. Person vs. Society  Act 1 Scene 1 lines 74-75 / 91-99


 During the fights of Capulet and
Montague, the citizens of Verona
were greatly disturbed. Then
came the Prince explaining to
them, Capulet and Montague,
about how the citizens felt
whenever they fight. He
threatened to kill them if they
ever fight again.
 Act 1 Scene 5 lines 131-132 / 152-155
 Romeo and Juliet deemed
themselves to be doomed after
knowing that they fell in love
with each other. He’s a
Montague and she’s a Capulet,
both of their families had been
fighting for years. This means
that the world won’t allow them
to be together.
