CHAPTER TEST #1

I. Answer the following questions. (2 points each)

1) Is the relation {(1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (4,4)} a function? Explain

- The relation of value of (1,1), (2,2), (3,3), (4,4) is a real function, because Since there is one value
of y and for value in x.

2) Which of the following diagram represents a relation that is NOT a function? Explain why.

- D, because the letter “D” has a diagram with a intersection of the number and the other side or
there a intersection between the three lines that because there are not a function.

3) Which of the following letters will pass the vertical line test? W X Y Z

- for W, X, Y is will be passed the vertical test but the Z wasn’t because the Z has a 3 vertical point
and that letter has different in other letters.

4) Squares of side x are cut from each corner of an 8 in x 5 in rectangle (see figure), so that its sides can
be folded to make a box with no top. Define a function in terms of x that can represent the volume of
this box.

Given:
a=5
b=8
x=?

Formula:
V= abx
,
Solution:
V= a•b•x
V= (5 – 2x) (8 – 2x) x
= (40 – 26x + 4x^2) x

The final answer is V(x)= 40x – 26x^2 + 4x^3

5) A certain chocolate bar costs P35.00 per piece. However, if you buy more than 10 pieces, they will be
marked down to a price of P32.00 per piece. Use a piecewise function to represent the cost in terms of
the number of chocolate bars bought.
