Keynote - Vorontsov

This document discusses sport science and medical support for elite swimmers in Russia, Great Britain, and Sweden. It outlines specialized centers that provide facilities and staff to support athletes through studies, data collection, biomechanics analysis, physiology testing, medical services, and nutrition guidance. For Russia, it describes the various state institutions that historically provided this support at the national, republic, and regional levels. It then provides details on the complex science support group for the Russian national swimming team, outlining their roles in planning, monitoring, testing, and advising on training, medical care, nutrition, psychology, and more.

Sport Science & Medical Support in preparation

of elite swimmers (Russia, GBR, Sweden)

NEC Head Coach, Sweden

Russian Head Coach 2009-2012,
1999-2008 British Swimming & ASA coach
Andrei VORONTSOV, Ph.D.
Practical Sport Science

• Specialised centers of sport science support appear around

the World (Service Centes)
• Usually they are based at Universities which afford
facilities & trained staff
• Many prominent sport scientists/science-research groups
paticipate in service delivery, combined with studies and
accumulation of data base
• Big national swimming teams/national training centers
require a sport science support on daily base covering all
major issues (biomechanics, physiology-biochemistry,
medical service, nutrition etc.)
SPORT SCIENCE PROVIDERS IN THE USSR/RUSSIA

1. Federal Science-Research Institutes for Physical

Culture and Sport (Laboratory of Sport Swimming)

2. Republican SRI for Ph.C. and Sport (10-12)
3. Departments and Chairs of Aquatic Sports (Swimming) at
Universities (around 50-60)

Complex Science Support Groups for:

1. National Team
2. Republican Swimming Teams + Moscow &
Leningrad SSG
3. Regional (provincial) teams
MEDICAL SUPPORT PROVIDERS:
1. State, republican and local Specialized Sports
Policlinics – routine health check every 6th month
2. Medical Support of the National Sports Teams
(Special Department within the Ministry of Sport)
3. Since 2010 all medical staff of the National Sports
Teams was disbanded and after revision &
assessment was subordinated to the Federal
Medical/Biological Agency (Federal Emergency
Medicine Institution)
Complex Scientific Group of the Russian
National Team

1973-1986 – CSG staff = 35-37

2000-2005 – ceased to exist
2005-2010 CSG staff = 3

Level 1. PROFOUND SCREENING at the FMBA
facilities – every 6 month all listed members to the
National Team. Admission to training based on
medical conclusions (CHIEF OF CSSG /TEAM DOCTORS)
Level 2. STAGE testing – in the beginning and in the
end of every block of training (as assigned by Head Coach)
Level 3. Routine testing – on advanced request of
coaches or swimmers at the training camps

TRAINING PROCESS IN THE NATIONAL
SWIMMING TEAM

• Season = 3 x 16-19-week
Macrocycles & each MC consists of
4 Mesocycles or Blocks:
1. Slows Aerobic + Functional Strength
2. Fast Aerobic + Specific Strength
3. Race Build Up (Quality Training)
4. Taper + competitions

Every training block, every

camp has scientific, medical &
nutritional cover, planned in
advance
ALTITUDE TRAINING

• Altitude Training – OPTIONAL

(altitude camp is held within every MC = 3 times a year)
• Venues of choice: TSAKHKADZOR – 1950 m
SIERRA-NEVADA – 2320 m above sea level
Model of altitude training based on
dynamics of adaptation
SCIENCE SUPPORT OF ALTITUDE TRAINING

Altitude Training within every MC:

(the content of science & medical support)
• Early selection of candidates based on training experience and
blood screening (reticulocytes, Hb, Ht, Fe)
