Introduction

LumiHealth (n.d.) was created to help Singaporeans form healthy habits and adopt

healthier lifestyles during the pandemic. As we move on, the application must adapt accordingly.

LumiHealth lacks certain essential features and availability for other operating systems.

Therefore Lumière seeks to improve user engagement through community building and

improved accessibility. These new features include food detection, mindfulness exercises,

community-focused features, and information centers to update Singaporeans about government

programs and assistance.

Undeniably, our society faces many challenges, including limited physical activity that

has led to health and wellness issues (LumiHealth, n.d.). Lumière aims to improve LumiHealth

by making it more comprehensive and user-friendly to promote health and wellness. Enhancing

its accessibility will also help more users achieve their goals and foster the community and

support necessary for long-term healthy habits. Virtual physical activity, mental health resources,

healthy habits, and healthcare access are essential for a resilient future.

Issue Identification

Dieting and Food Scanning

The lack of food scanning and detection features in LumiHealth limits users'

ability to monitor their food intake accurately. According to Ingels et al. (2017), adherence to

dietary tracking is crucial for successful weight management programs. Incorporating the

proposed food scanning and detection feature in LumiHealth can help users track their food

consumption more accurately, which is essential for effective weight management.

The need for more accuracy is due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lifestyle

behaviors, including changes in eating habits (Di Renzo et al., 2020). The study found that
during the lockdown, there was an increase in snacking and a decrease in the consumption of

fruits and vegetables. These findings emphasize the importance of tools such as the food

scanning and detection feature in LumiHealth, which can assist users in regulating their food

intake.

Additionally, personalized interventions are vital in promoting healthy lifestyles (Althoff

et al., 2022). The study found that such personalizations encourage individuals to engage in

healthy behaviors and promote long-term adherence to healthy lifestyles. The approach used in

Althoff's study can be applied to developing LumiHealth, which provides customized food

tracking and nutritional advice based on individual dietary preferences and goals.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the second aspect of LumiHealth that Lumière will address. Currently,

LumiHealth does not have a practical in-built feature that tackles mental health. While other

applications are compatible with LumiHealth to support its mindfulness feature, it cannot

cultivate mindfulness in users.

Mindfulness can be defined as a form of nonjudgmental attention to the present moment

(Kabat-Zinn, 1994). The elements of mindfulness, precisely awareness and nonjudgmental

acceptance of one's current state, are regarded as an effective remedy against common forms of

psychological distress, which involve the maladaptive tendencies to avoid, suppress, or over-

engage in distressing thoughts and emotions (Hayes & Feldman, 2004; Kabat-Zinn, 1990).

Specific research has provided evidence that suggests that in addition to the long-term

physiological impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the world, it also has had deleterious

effects on mental health (Cui et al., 2022; Jahanshahi et al., 2020; Mertens et al., 2020; Xiang et

al., 2020). Studies have shown that people have developed a myriad of psychiatric symptoms
(Rohde et al., 2020), such as post-traumatic stress symptoms (Rossi et al., 2020), depression

(Meda et al., 2021), psychological distress (Kisely et al., 2020), anxiety (Lai et al., 2020) from

the pandemic. Additionally, researchers have raised concerns about the longevity of these

symptoms becoming similar to general population levels. As such, many are investigating

mindfulness as a scalable, low-cost intervention that can protect public mental health against the

lasting effects of the pandemic as well as future global crises (Zhu et al., 2021).

Community

The third aspect identified in LumiHealth is the need for more community engagement.

Lumihealth was built during COVID-19 amidst various social distancing regulations. With

multiple regulations in place, the pandemic has brought about many unprecedented challenges,

such as mental health issues, social isolation, disconnectedness (World Health Organization

[WHO], 2022), and a significant deterioration of community well-being (Van Agteren et al.,

2020). These can exacerbate emotions of fear, uncertainty, and loneliness, resulting in affective

and behavioral issues (WHO, 2022).

Social engagement is an essential factor in pursuing community wellness as depicted by

human's need for love and belonging in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow & Lewis, 1987).

As the post-pandemic era emerges, it is increasingly vital for individuals to rebuild social

connections and re-engage in their community. Rackow et al. (2015) highlight Benight and

Bandura's 'enabling hypothesis,' in which self-efficacy and social support indirectly influence

behavior. The study determined that actively seeking out new exercise partners and working out

with them enhances perceived emotional and instrumental social support, as such social presence

would be ideal for fostering a sense of community among those who pursue well-being.
Multiple other studies have also shown the effectiveness of social support in influencing

individuals' physical activity. A study conducted by Maturo and Cunningham (2013) revealed a

positive correlation between friendship influences and the cultivation of healthy lifelong habits.

Similarly, another study found that when an adolescent is paired with an exercising companion

and receives parental support to exercise, there is a significant increase in physical activity

engagement and higher perceived benefits of physical activity (King et al., 2008).

Utility

The final aspect LumiHealth lacks is the utility of the app in other areas that would

support the welfare of its users. In recent years, Singaporeans have gotten various benefits from

various government agencies. Singaporean households in 2022 and 2023 received $200 vouchers

from the Community Development Council (CDC) for purchasing food at hawker centers. In

2022, male citizens currently serving or having completed National Service (NS) were eligible to

receive $100 vouchers for their service (MINDEF, n.d.).

In order to obtain these vouchers, one needs to download different applications and

proceed to a website to activate them. According to the team's population survey about obtaining

and using CDC vouchers, many people needed help. When asked about the overall experience

obtaining and using the vouchers, 62% of respondents answered neither satisfied nor dissatisfied

(see Appendix Figure 3). Most respondents were dissatisfied with obtaining the vouchers (see

Appendix Figure 1). Some elaborated that the steps were complicated or hard to understand and

highlighted that they needed to be made aware that the household members could access

vouchers. A consistently large number of respondents also found the process of using the

vouchers complicated (see Appendix Figure 2). While they could use the vouchers, many
commented on the need for more visibility on the merchants accepting them. Some respondents

wanted a feature that indicates which merchants accept the vouchers.

Another situation that arose from the pandemic was the rise in clinical cases. In a forum

post by Dr. Jeremy Chan, he noted that patients with mild ailments should not be hogging

polyclinic queues (Chan, 2023). This allows medical staff to prioritize patients with more severe

ailments better and reduce waiting time. One way to alleviate this issue is through the use of

telehealth services. Thomas et al. (2023) noted the benefits of telehealth, mainly mitigating the

time and cost of traveling to the clinic and having more doctors available to see the patient.

Consulting the doctor online will shorten queues at the clinic and free up more healthcare

providers. If the patient's condition requires further analysis, they will be advised to come down

for a further check-up. Otherwise, a prescription is issued, and the patient only needs to collect

the medication.

Accessibility

To take Lumihealth to the next level, Lumière is committed to enhancing the accessibility

of Lumihealth. Currently, only Apple iPhone and Apple Watch users enjoy the benefits of the

Lumihealth application, limiting its user reach (LumiHealth, n.d.). Lumière is extending the

application to Android users to address this issue, opening up a significant portion of untapped

users. Adding Android users to the Lumihealth community is a significant milestone in the

application's journey toward making health and wellness accessible to all Singaporeans.

Lumière is dedicated to empowering individuals to regain control of their well-being

through innovative solutions, and we aim to create a more inclusive and supportive health

community in Singapore. Accessibility to technology is a significant barrier for some, so

Lumiére need not require an additional smart wearable if the user does not own one. Instead, it
would depend on the smartphone's onboard hardware to estimate steps taken, calorie

expenditure, and hours spent in motion.

Technology Evolution

Under Armour's MyFitnessPal

When tracking one's macro diet, there are plenty of apps to choose from, but not all are

created equal. An example would be the MyFitnessPal application, a popular option for those

looking to track their diet thanks to its expansive database of foods and customizable meal

options (MyFitnessPal, n.d.). However, with any user-input system, there is a tendency for

inaccuracy as manual input is time-consuming and prone to mistakes, which could sabotage

progress toward an individual's weight management goals.

Ingels et al. (2017) study highlights the importance of consistent and frequent tracking for

successful weight management and suggests that accurate measurement is likely an important

factor in achieving weight loss success through dietary tracking. This is where Lumière's

technology innovation comes in. With the upgraded food scanning and detection feature,

Lumière aims to solve the issue of inaccurate tracking of calorie and macronutrient intake and

improve the overall utility of the application's weight management program.

Apple Watch's Mindfulness

The Mindfulness app includes Reflect and Breathe features, intended for users to take

moments throughout their day to stop and have time for themselves (Apple, 2021). While these

features can be considered guided meditation with written prompts to guide users' mindfulness

sessions, as well as Feel haptics and animation that expands and contracts to direct breathing

patterns. However, more guidance during the Reflect feature is required. Having guided
meditations with focused topics keeps beginner users engaged, or those uninterested in

meditation can listen to music created to cultivate mindfulness and center themselves.

This application is also only available on the Apple Watch, which excludes a large

proportion of the population who are not Apple Watch users, let alone Apple users. Additionally,

there can be further improvement in its accessibility and community. Community is vital in

keeping ourselves accountable and consistent, which is especially important in developing

mindfulness. Incorporating a community feature where users can interact with each other will

encourage users to make a continuous effort to take time to engage in the app's exercises.

Metadream's Bondee

Developed by Metadream, Bondee is a social app that utilizes 3D avatars to interact with

one another. The platform is designed to have an "open world meta-universe" concept where

users can create their own personalized virtual space, customize their avatar's appearance, share

their moods and snippets of life, and converse with friends through the built-in chat function

(Bondee, n.d.; Tan & Tan, 2023). The platform allows for a good amount of bandwidth and

social presence and is especially prominent in personalization.

Bondee is an excellent way for people to interact. However, this application has limited

features outside of status sharing and chatting with friends. The team believes that the features

are unique and have the potential to be incorporated into Lumiére to increase community

engagement and social support. Studies have shown that peer-based and interest-driven networks

and social media opportunities for socialization could help enhance an individual's health

learning journey (Ito et al., 2010; Goodyear & Armour, 2018). Social media platforms have been

found to effectively engage individuals in promoting mutual support, social connectedness, and
group belongingness, thus fostering better community wellness together by allowing people to

share and engage in each other's experiences (Naslund et al., 2016).

Strava's Accessibility

The Strava app has been a beacon of inspiration for many health and wellness

applications, providing a model for the industry to follow by providing support for both iOS and

Android operation systems to engage with more users to pursue an active lifestyle (Strava, n.d.).

Here at Lumiere, we have been stirred by Strava's innovative approach to health and wellness

management, and it has driven us to create a similar experience for our users. With the new

update, introducing support for both iOS and Android devices allows users to harness the

application's full potential with just their smartphone or pair it with a smart wearable device for

more accurate health tracking. This update will enrich the user experience and cultivate a more

active and healthy lifestyle.

Technology Proposal

Lumiére's Dieting and Food Scanning Feature

Users could use their smartphone camera to scan food items and labels, which the

application would recognize using image recognition technology. The app provides calorie,

macronutrients, and serving size information for food. Image recognition technology can also

identify cooked food on a plate and estimate macronutrients based on food dimensions. Users

can also customize the app to track and advise on their diets. The app lets users edit food

macronutrients. This unique method for accurately and immediately tracking food intake reduces

user error, making weight management and overall health and wellness more reliable.

This feature outperforms MyFitnessPal's feature in multiple ways. First, it provides users

with real-time feedback, simplifying food intake monitoring and allowing for rapid adjustments.
Second, personalized interventions are incorporated into Lumihealth's food scanning and

detection feature to provide users with individualized nutritional advice based on their dietary

preferences and goals. MyFitnessPal, on the other hand, offers generic nutritional advice that

may be less effective in promoting long-term adherence to healthy lifestyles. The study by Di

Renzo et al. (2020) emphasizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lifestyle behaviors,

such as dietary adjustments. During stressful situations such as lockdowns, Lumihealth's food

scanning and detection feature can assist users in managing their food consumption. In contrast,

MyFitnessPal's food tracking feature may need to be more adaptable to dietary changes during

such periods.

Feature Intro 1.1: Food Scanning and Diet Management

Music playlists for mindfulness

As mentioned previously, LumiHealth's mindfulness features and the Apple Watch's

Mindfulness application need to be improved in truly encouraging users to practice mindfulness

and creating a space to do so. The improved program will have a function to guide users through

mindfulness techniques like meditation and self-reflection. It includes the introduction of curated

in-app playlists with music that is specifically created to cultivate mindfulness. Studies have

shown that listening to mindfulness-based music listening can effectively regulate negative

emotions in individuals (Liu et al., 2021a), decrease their negative emotional experiences (Liu et

al., 2021b), and lower perceived stress (Axelsen et al., 2022).

Lumiére will feature the TENG company, a leading non-profit arts organization in

Singapore, to support local businesses. TENG produces audio tracks with binaural beats, which

were evaluated for their effects on psychological stress and physiological arousal (The TENG
Company, n.d.). Lumiére's playlists will include TENG's Music for Mindfulness, which uses

Binaural Beats to promote wellness and reduce stress and anxiety.

Lumihealth Community

Similar to Bondee's "open world meta-universe" concept, Lumiére users can interact with

each other in the Lumihealth Community Playground. Using customizable avatars, users can

engage each other in health and wellness activities. Users can have their avatars reflect

themselves participating in activities, so their friends can see and 'join' them in the Lumihealth

Community Playground in real time. For example, if the user is in a mindfulness session

listening to the Music for Mindfulness playlist, their avatar will also meditate and listen to music.

Their friends can 'join' the mindfulness session by tapping on the mediating avatar. An online

community will encourage users to partake in activities together and promote accountability

among users. This feature is particularly effective in the mindfulness function of Lumiére, as

research has shown that regular meditation practice is more critical than prolonged infrequent

sessions (LaBelle et al., 2023).

Additionally, Lumiére will expand on the LumiHealth Challenges by creating community

challenges on top of the pre-existing challenges for individuals. These challenges can range from

keeping their nutrition goals to engaging in a certain amount of mindfulness sessions. The

community challenges will promote chasing wellness together amongst friends and family. Users

will be required to engage in these challenges together online by engaging in wellness activities

concurrently, and this can be done without having to meet physically.

Feature Intro 3.0: Lumi Community’s Social Playground

Feature Intro 3.1: Personalisation of Lumi Avatars with Customizable Closet and Shop

Interactive Hub

Lumiére tackles the utility issue by acting as an interactive hub to inform users how to

obtain these vouchers and other relevant information, such as which merchants accept them or

the current balance left. This helps alleviate users' worries as all the information is presented. If

there are any complex questions the user might have, Lumiére will also direct the user to the

relevant agency to answer their question.

As teleconsultation is a relatively new technology, we want more people to be aware of

it, not just for the benefit of the healthcare providers but for the users themselves. Currently, the

National University Health System's (NUHS) application, oneNUHS, allows patients to do

teleconsultation. To make teleconsulting more accessible, Lumiére will work with oneNUHS to

allow users to book appointment slots without downloading the oneNUHS application.
Feature Intro 4: Interactive Hub with Lumi Chatbot

Inclusivity and Accessibility

iOS and Android compatibility gives users maximum health and wellness management

flexibility. This update's ability to use the application on smartphones without smart wearables is

exciting. Users can track health metrics and goals without a smartwatch or fitness tracker.

Lumiére estimates steps, calories, and motion time using the smartphone's hardware. This makes

it more accessible to all Singaporeans, regardless of their technological background or resources.

Lumihealth offers personalized health recommendations and mindfulness exercises,

unlike Strava, which only tracks fitness and social features. Lumiére's Lumihealth update

changes Singaporeans' health and wellness management. Lumiére's app for smartwatches

motivates users when they interact with Lumihealth while getting reminders to reach their goals.

Conclusion

As society comes into the post-pandemic time, so should LumiHealth. LumiHealth was

created to help Singaporeans form healthy habits and adopt healthier lifestyles during COVID-
19. With improved user engagement through community building and improved accessibility,

Lumière addresses LumiHealth's shortcomings and adapts to the new normal. Its new features

include superior food detection functions, refined mindfulness exercises, community-focused

features, and updated information centers.

Firstly, Lumiére contains cutting-edge technology that allows for personalization and

increased nutrition tracking and advice accuracy. Secondly, mindfulness music playlists and

guided meditation will provide a more well-rounded intervention to promote mental health as

people recover from the chaos of COVID-19. Thirdly, adding Lumihealth Community will

garner support among those striving for wellness and better engage users. Fourthly, the

interactive hub serves to help people help themselves to the resources made available by the

Government. Finally, Lumiére has been made available to all smartphone users, increasing its

accessibility and reach to a larger audience.

With all its new and updated features that are highly comprehensive and user-friendly,

Lumiére will better aid its users in achieving their health and wellness goals, as well as gain a

supportive community in the process.
