Abstract
Mobile applications in the form of iOS and Android applications have increased in
popularity over the years. Since its inception in 1983, it has evolved from simple contacts
application with only a name and mobile number to an application that has a name, company
name, multiple phone numbers, among others. Its evolution has made the world’s population use
these apps in a frequent manner. This paper aims to show the advantages of using mobile
applications in their respective business operations. Data were collected from interviews with
(2) business executives in the car industry and (1) executive coming from an information
technology company. In addition, a survey was made to (30) respondents currently in Taft
Avenue, Manila. The research showed whether advantages in using mobile applications in

the sellers in the mobile industry. In a way, the relationship between the producers of the

mobile industry to survive, while consumers need producers so that they may complement
their businesses with the available technology at present. The emerging market of the
smartphone industry has caused the rapid increase of inventions of mobile applications
(apps). It has transformed the simple Contacts App, which could only save the name and a
single mobile number of the person, into something that is already able to enter multiple
phone numbers with the name of the person, the company they are affiliated with, and
numerous other facts about them such as their birthday. Moreover, the simple innovations of
the most important mobile application in the industry are viewed as a trend that will remain
in the market in the years to come. Consequently, mobile applications would become an
In fact, business entities that use mobile applications greatly contribute to a better
overall performance by the company (Twigg, 2013). The technological trend enables a
company to develop in a manner that is eyed by investors, potential investors and owners.
Truly, the use of mobile applications in businesses is continually growing. Similar with other
products that are in the same stage, producers and consumers should guide the growth of this
usage in order to achieve its full potential in the mobile industry. According to Richmond
(2011), mobile applications were first used when the commercial mobile phones were first

introduced in 1983. In fact, inventors tried to create mobile phones that could already connect
to the Internet in order for consumers to become more satisfied when they use their cellular
phones. While they originally fell short of the clients’ expectations, they have gone through
improvements that have made them immensely successful in this field. In addition, statistics
show that there are over 4 billion mobile phones that are currently being used in the world; 1
billion of which are smartphones, while the rest are SMS-enabled. Richmond (2011) also
claims that companies should be able to adapt to the current trend, and be able to strategize
the phenomenon to gain the opportunity of dictating the future of mobile production.
The drive to invent a new word to refer to the soaring popularity of mobile
applications is due to the record highs of smartphone sales in the market. Since mobile
In the modern slang, the word appmosphere refers to the surrounding environment of
mobile applications, though it has no reliable meaning found on the Internet as of late. By
dividing the compound word to determine its etymology, its meaning can be surmised from
the words “app” and “atmosphere” combined. App, as defined by the Merriam-Webster
(2013) dictionary, is simply the short term for application. The word application has at least
five definitions in the dictionary. In this investigation, researchers will be using the word
application that refers to what Merriam-Webster (2013) defined as “a computer program that
would perform for a specific task”. In addition, atmosphere, as also defined by the Merriam-
apps operate on either iOS or Android. According to Techterms (2011), iOS is an operating
system (OS) designed by Apple, Inc and made for the iPhone. In fact, the name iOS was
only used last June 2009 for it used to be called the iPhone OS. Currently, it controls not

only the iPhone but also the iPod Touch and the famous iPad. Similar to desktops, iOS
functions with the graphical user interface (GUI). Since it is an OS for a mobile phone, iOS
was intended for touchscreen inputs and not the conventional keyboard and mouse. Another
setback in this kind of OS is that it cannot manage files unlike the Mac OS X and Windows.
Similarly, Techterms (2010) defined that Google was the one that established Android.
Android refers to a machine invented to look and act like a human. Contrasting with the iOS
is its exclusivity. Android operates on several smartphones like the Motorola Droid,
Samsung Galaxy and Nexus One. This OS was based on the Linux kernel. It is open source,
meaning that the creators may alter and change the settings for the smartphone. Thus, even if
smartphones have the same OS, they may still have different GUIs.

Since its inception, the popularity of mobile applications ascended alongside the
strong integration of mobile communication in life; however, it is only recently that it started
to greatly impact the daily lives of individuals. Mobile applications development companies
have not only created applications for entertainment, but also applications that are beneficial
to those in the corporate field. For instance, some applications, such as Evernote, remove the
need for sticky notes and separate alarms; thus, it compacted two things into one useful

in the most trivial ways such as sharing a high score achieved in an application. In fact, due
to the heavy effect of social integration, most businesses endeavor to expand into that market
In the same way, mobile application developers intend to expand the fields that can be
covered by the functions of their applications. This amounted to the growth of business-
related applications and conducting business activities with the help of applications. Creating
having new platforms for software enable business owners to operate their businesses more
smoothly (Dubiensky, 2013). According to Fiorito and Gable (2012), the inventory
management systems have changed the way merchandising companies track, order and
reorder goods. The use of bar codes has eased the work of the people working for the
supplies department. They are also able to allocate more efficiently the products and goods
While some available applications may not automatically appeal to the purpose of the
business, it is entirely possible and feasible to create one. Pozin (2012) stated that mobile
applications could be engineered to cater specifically to the needs of the business. Ford
(2013) conducted a case study on how small electronic businesses may create a business
(BI Apps) might also help other businesses in terms of financial concerns (Lipsitz, 2012).
Mobile applications not only impact the internal members of businesses, but also the
communication between buyers and sellers. Nielsen’s study cited in Racherla, Furner and
THE ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE APPS IN BUSINESS 6
Babb (2012) reported that consumers use 36% of the apps that are downloaded often, while
62% of which are deleted after two weeks of download. In this data, it can be inferred that
application design and functionality is essential to a business’s success. Ghani and Rayid
(2006) claimed that academic researchers and businessmen should frequently interact with
one another. In this way, the gap is bridged. Information will be updated regarding the needs
of the consumers. Innovations will also become easier when it the gap between the two

Tackling the growing role of mobile applications in Germany, Bröker & Karla’s (2012)

3.5 million to 33.5 million GB, which can be interpreted as an enormous boom in the number
The focus of this paper is to look for the advantages of mobile applications in small-
time businesses in Taft Avenue, Manila. The publications found by the researchers were all
focused in another country, or on an international level; no study was found that pertains to
the use of mobile applications to complement the businesses in Manila or the Philippines.
Another concern raised by the researchers would be the type of business that would use the
mobile applications. In fact, all literature discovered had only involved large-scale
businesses. Therefore, the paper aims to establish a study that would complement mobile
applications for small-time businesses. Findings in the international level proved that the
appmosphere has complemented their companies. It is then the goal of this paper to verify

whether international investigations also apply to local sectors, specifically in the City of
Manila.
In accordance with this, this research aims to prove whether the appmosphere would

research questions, both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed by the
researchers. Specifically, a survey was conducted to thirty (30) people that work, study, or
reside in Taft Avenue, Manila. The respondents’ ages ranged from 16 years old to 38 years
old, from the pool of consumers available in the immediate area surrounding De La Salle
University. The researchers utilized this method in order to gain knowledge on the personal
opinions of consumers regarding the usage of mobile applications. The survey consisted of
eleven questions (Q1-Q11) to acquire appropriate results, and was conducted on November 6
to 8, 2013. On the other hand, interviews conducted with three (3) professionals were used to
garner an expert’s view on the emerging app-economy and its significance in the business
industry. The interviews were conducted through electronic mail (e-mail); the interviewees

In Q1, all respondents for the interview stated that iOS and Android Apps definitely
help businesses progress. R3 claimed that with the emergence of social media and Internet
access, people nowadays are finding ways to simply acquire information without the torture
of going through numerous processes just to access the information. Developing compact
mobile apps could allow businesses to devise a strategy that influences the likes of the target
market of the industry. He stressed that convenience is the key to the success of a business.
R1 and R2 complimented the idea of R3 by stating that with the presence of these kinds of
mobile apps, it would allow business transactions to become easier, faster, more convenient
and cost efficient, as well as increase in accuracy, reliability and even accessibility for the
company.
Moreover, Q2 allowed the researchers to check whether mobile apps will fully
takeover the operations of a business. R2 claimed that using mobile apps is the better way of
operating the business since the traditional way of doing a business—that is, a business
using them takes a shorter time to obtain the target results. This coincides with Dubienski’s
(2013) claim that mobile applications have done nothing but explode in the market and that,
for the past couple of years, his phone has evolved from an over-used cellular phone to a very
useful human tool. He uses these applications to show documents, do project management
and even access his customer relation management (CRM) through them. R1 and R3, on the
other hand, supported one another by claiming that choosing the mode of operations in the
business would still depend on what kind of business they are in. R3 said that the Philippine
market for technology is emerging; however, the concern with the market is the slow Internet
access. It may hamper the potential of one’s mobile app platform for business and marketing
THE ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE APPS IN BUSINESS 14
because of the lack of speed for Internet access, but they should still get involved in the tablet
and smartphone industry so that they will not be left behind by the fast-changing market
preferences. R1 supported R3 stating that there are products in the industry that still require
human interaction.
In addition, Q3 exposed how iOS and Android apps affect the workplace of the
company. R1 asserted that having these mobile apps are very advantageous to the business
operations. She added that most of the big businesses are into the mobile app industry. R2
believed that these apps are not only convenient and handy to use during business hours but
they may also be used for entertainment. He further explained that these gadgets used for
entertainment would help workers to relax especially in a time of stress and allow them to
refocus their task at hand. This agrees with Eddy (2013), who stated that there is a large
increase of mobile applications and mobile gadgets that has been found in small businesses,
and that most of the employees are dependent on these applications so that they will be able
to finish their work. Although with all the advantages being mentioned by both R1 and R2,
R3 appealed that the businesses are not yet ready. As of the moment, industries are still
catching up with the new form of communication. Most of them still do not have the ability
In Q4, all respondents replied that they would advise businesses to use mobile apps.
R3 even argued that businesses would either choose to adapt to the new form of operations or
simply die. R1 tried to stress that these apps should be easy to use and it should be, as much
as possible, simple. R2 also mentioned that having mobile apps is a very huge factor in the
success of the industry. He enhanced his idea that traditional ways may not be totally
eliminated in the process of doing businesses, but the companies that have these kinds of
mobile applications will surely be ahead of those who do not. This agrees with Oikonomou
and Vafopoulous (2012), who informed the public that in the everyday lives of the people,
THE ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE APPS IN BUSINESS 15
they would search, do social networking and blog, and because of this data, businesses have
transferred to the Internet. Forming business applications in terms of macro and micro have
become very crucial for computer scientists. With all their statements for Q4, it can be
implied that having mobile apps inside a business is more or less an advantage in a business
and people will have no choice but to adapt to the current system.
In addition to Q4, Q5 examines the respondents whether these mobile apps are to
become predominant assets in the future of businesses. R1 and R2 thought that they would
be important parts of a business organization. R3 instead specified that these assets will not
be that dominant in the company but they will be a crucial part of communication and
business improvement. Its role will be to manage the company and improve the means of
interaction with their clients—Koegler (2013) stated that many businesses specifically
adapted to the needs of their firm by developing their own specialized mobile applications,
instead of resorting to using a standard web browser all the time. In the statements made by
the respondents, it can be inferred that although they may not dominate the industry, they will
Complimenting Q4 and Q5, Q6 was designed to test whether mobile apps will be a
need in a business after a few years. R2 stated that it is already a need now. Even if some
businesses would think that they are still too advanced for the market, it is still better to be
more advanced. R1 and R3 supported R2 but they think that the industry would still need
time to fully upgrade their system. Adaptation according to R3 is essential because they will
need to have very fast analysis in order for the people involved in decision-making to act
more quickly. In fact, having these apps could change one’s market share.
In Q7, the researchers tried to study the effect of mobile apps to the traditional ways
of doing businesses. All respondents supported one another by confidently replying that
mobile apps cannot and will not cause the traditional ways of doing businesses to become
THE ADVANTAGES OF MOBILE APPS IN BUSINESS 16
extinct. R1 emphasized that human beings would need interactions with one another. R2
added that they will not be fully gone but they would have to adapt to the current trend of the
market. R3 also asserted that people will not allow the entire clientele to the platform of
technology, but they would have choices depending on their preference and comfort towards
work.
In Q8, the scholars tried to find out what kind of apps are to be needed in performing
a business. R2 and R3 agreed with one another by stating that any mobile app that could do
analysis is needed in the enterprise. R1 then stated that any app that could monitor stocks,
currency and fashion could perform their tasks in the corporate world as well. Customer
portals and location tracking will also be helpful based on the answer of R3. In addition to
this, R2 affirmed that statistical instruments that are made into mobile apps are also beneficial
to the firm.
establishment could be affected with the advent of the mobile apps. Both R1 and R2
confirmed that the number of employees in the establishment could indeed be lessened, but
R3 suggested that the volume of workers would remain the same. However, they would have
to be reallocated to another department that needs their contribution. Furthermore, the skill
sets of the workers will have to transition into a more tech-based infrastructure for them to
Lastly, Q10 was devised to illustrate the advantages of using mobile apps in doing
businesses over the traditional way. All respondents made emphasis on speed of operations.
They also reported that accuracy in doing reports is also of great help to the industry. R1
highlighted that it will really provide convenience for as long as there is Internet connection.
She supplemented her response that there would be a bigger and greater chance of exploring
For the most part, the results gathered in the surveys and the interviews generated the

From the survey results, it can be inferred that most of the respondents are reliant on
division between the total number of respondents when it came to the use of online stores as a
medium for business transactions, there is still the factor of advertising for the products seen
in the online stores. In addition, it can be deduced from Table 4 that most of the respondents
find smartphones easy to operate; thus, the appmosphere appeals to majority of the market.
The outcomes of the interviews show a different perspective on the possible effects of
the appmosphere on business operations. While all of the three experts agreed that mobile
applications are definitely a novel factor to consider when operating a business, their
opinions differ on its usage. It is apparently not applicable for all businesses, as the type of
business still dictates whether the need for mobile applications exists. On the other hand, it is
an extremely significant tool in the emerging app-economy, albeit perhaps the Philippine
economy is not yet ready to fully embrace mobile applications. However, the fact remains
that the utilization of mobile applications will be an asset to the business, and whether or not
they become its most dominant asset, they will have a large impact on the performance of the
business. These experts are also convinced that the presence of mobile applications will not
assume full control of the kind of business transactions that take place, as the necessity for

human interaction will always be pronounced; nonetheless, it will decrease the need to
However, the researchers overlooked some factors when the data gathering for the

of using electronic mail to remove the hindrance of unanswered follow-up questions. There
should also be an interviewee coming from a company that uses mobile applications to have
firsthand information on the subject matter. Lastly, the future writers should also specify the
