Simple wire antennas like dipoles are commonly used in amateur radio. A half-wave dipole cut for the desired frequency is a basic and effective antenna. It has a balanced feedpoint of around 72 ohms when elevated a quarter wavelength above ground. Other variations include inverted V dipoles, sloping dipoles, and multi-band designs using traps or additional elements. Proper tuning is required to match the antenna impedance to the transmitter.
