Introduction

The Problem

One of the areas of the pandemic that had the largest impact on students was their academic
work, which resulted in curriculum changes. Many students experienced cultural shock or
sudden at the change as a result of this transition. Students who participated in online learning
were significantly impacted since both their academic performance and strategy had to change.
Additionally, there are a number of unforeseen issues that have made learning more difficult,
such as the unpredictable loss of an internet connection as well as issues with distractions,
teacher-student interaction, teaching methods, and connection. Students experience a variety
of issues during online learning that have an impact on their academic achievement.

Deficiences of the Study

Even though the study of conducted by Students’ perception and preference for online
education in India during COVID -19 pandemic covered students' perceptions of online
education, the studies did not address the cause of the effects on students. The possible
disadvantage of online learning is also not mentioned.

Importance of the Study

The importance of the study is for students who experience online learning and those who will
experience it to know the problems they will face in their studies and this will be the way to
have a solution to these problems.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to find out the perception of first year engineering students of
Emilio Aguinaldo College in Cavite who face the online class and factors that effect their
academic performance.
Chapter 1

Statement of the Problem

This study intends to analyze the perception of first-year engineering students of EAC- Cavite.

1. What are the perceptions of the first-year engineering student in online learning modality?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning?

Significance of the Study

The researchers conducted this study because it has significance to various areas. First, the
results of this study will be beneficial to students, their parents, school admins, and teachers in
providing a better understanding of the impacts of online learning modality on the academic
performance of first-year students specifically Engineering students.

First-year Engineering students.

This study will help the students that are currently taking Engineering programs, in
understanding and determining the impacts of online learning modality on their academic
performance. They must consider the different factors to know if online learning gives a negative
impact than the positive one otherwise, they will regret it in the next future. This study will help
them improve their understanding ability. At the same time, this will help them be aware that
choosing and continuing online learning have both positive and negative impacts and they should
consider the different factors and considerations to avoid conflicts and regrets.

Parents.
This study will help the parents that serve as the main influence in their children’s career
development, they will know and understand that online learning sounds easy but it has both
gives positive and negative impacts.

School admins.
This study will help the school admins. The students’ career success can be fulfilled if proper
enlightenment and guidance were given to students. This is appropriate for them to understand
the differences between students, their capabilities, personality, and intellect. Helping teachers
and students by being the number one in leading and guiding them to know what platform is the
best way for the students. A collaborative effort of the school admins should be done so that the
students will have a better knowledge about how online learning modality impacts their
academic performance.

Teachers.
This study will also be beneficial to the teachers that serve as the second parent of the students.
Understanding that online learning modality does not only give positive impacts but also
negative impacts will help them how to adjust and make possible ways to make the students
improve their academic performances. with the impacts that affect the student’s performance.

The researchers conducted this study to determine the different factors that impact the academic
performance of first-year students specifically Engineering students of Emilio Aguinaldo
College. This will help them know and understand that those impacts give a large contribution in
terms of their performance.

Scope and Delimitation

Scope
The study will look at how people perceive the effects of the online learning medium. Only 50
first-year engineering students from EAC-C will be able to participate in this study, which will
be conducted during the academic year 2022–2023.

Delimitation

Furthermore, the participants will be selected randomly. The 50 students will be answering our
questions by using Google forms.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Effectiveness of online learning compared to traditional face to face

The analysis of the teaching and learning experience based on three indicators student’s learning
experience, student’s academic performance and instructor observations showed that DLPCA had a
positive impact on students and instructors. Lorico DS.LapitanJr., Cristina E.Tiangco,Divine Angela
G.Sumalinog, Noel S.Sabarillo, Joey Mark Diaz (2021) The potential exists for increasing the number of
non-STEM majors engaged in citizen science using the flexibility of online learning to teach
environmental science core concepts. . Jasmine Paul and Felicia Jefferson (2019) The combined model of
online teaching with the flipped learning improved students’ learning, attention, and evaluation of
courses. Tao Tang, Atef M. Abuhmaid, Melad Olaimat, Dana M. Oudat, Maged Aldhaeebi, Ebrahim
Bamanger (2020) The pooled analysis comparing all blended learning to traditional learning showed
significantly better knowledge outcomes for blended learning. Alexandre Vallée, Jacques Blacher , Alain
Cariou, Emmanuel Sorbets (2020) On the other hand, the mental well-being of students was found to be
negatively affected during the pandemic. Inequalities of virtual teaching services worldwide were also
noted to cause differences in medical education. Robyn-Jenia Wilcha (2020)

Challenges and barriers to successful online learning

It is found that the main problems that influence and impact online EFL learning during COVID-19 are
related to technical, academic, and communication challenges. Mohammad Mahyoob (2020) The
technological challenges are mainly related to the unreliability of Internet connections and many
students’ lack of necessary electronic devices. The pedagogical challenges are principally associated with
teachers’ and learners’ lack of digital skills, the lack of structured content versus the abundance of
online resources, learners’ lack of interactivity and motivation and teachers’ lack of social and cognitive
presence (the ability to construct meaning through sustained communication within a community of
inquiry). Fernando Ferri, Patrizia Grifoni Tiziana Guzzo (2020) Most frequently encountered were
difficulty adjusting learning styles, having to perform responsibilities at home, and poor communication
between educators and learners. Ronnie E. Baticulon MD, Jinno Jenkin Sy, John Carlo B. Reyes MD, PhD

Research Design

This research design is a descriptive research. The research entitled Perception on the impact of
Online Learning Modality to the Academic Performance of First Year Engineering Students of
EAC- Cavite. The research only gives a lot of description about the impact of Online learning
modality. This research also gives an idea of what should be done and what should not be done
that will help a student grow

Informants Profile

First-year Engineering students in Emillio Aguinaldo College - Cavite Campus school year 2022-2023. We
will use random sampling to get 50 total of the respondents to take an online survey.

Research Instrument

The research will conduct online survey and the usage of self-made questionnaire for gathering
data and information that will be given to the selected first-year Engineering students. The
question serves as a broader continuation of the statement of the problem that will help the
researchers to gather complete data from the concluding these answers from the essence of this
research paper.

Data Gathering Procedure

In order to conduct the study at Emilio Aguinaldo College, the researchers wrote a letter
requesting permission. They also created a questionnaire that had been approved by a research
professor.

The respondents were made aware of the study's objectives and asked to provide honest
responses. The respondents' identities and personal information were kept a secret from everyone
but the researchers. An online survey will be used to conduct the survey. The survey's final
results, which were obtained after gathering all the data, will serve as the study's foundation.
Ethical Consideration

Informed consent

Informed consent means that the person participating in the evaluation is fully informed about
the evaluation being conducted. Participants need to be made aware of the purpose of the project,
who or what group is funding it, how the findings will be used, if there are any potential adverse
impacts of their participation and who will have access to the findings. The main purpose of
informed consent is that the participant is able to make an informed decision as to whether they
will participate in the evaluation or not. Additional information should also be provided in the
event that the participant becomes distressed in any way during their participation.1,2

Voluntary participation

Voluntary participation means that people participate in the evaluation free from coercion.
Participants are free to withdraw their participation at any time without negatively impacting on
their involvement in future services or the current program2 and relationships with any of the
researchers or research bodies involved. It can be challenging to encourage high risk youth to
become engaged in a program and it is therefore difficult when participants choose not to
continue in a program. It is the right of participants to leave a program of this nature at any time,
therefore no pressure should be placed on those who choose not to continue. Explanations are
also not required.

Confidentiality
Confidentiality means that any identifying information is not made available to, or accessed by
anyone but the program coordinator.2 Confidentiality also ensures such identifying information
is excluded from any reports or published documents. Given that there are often small numbers
in peer based programs, it is very important to consider how reports are worded to ensure that
there is no opportunity for people to be identified even though names are not used.

Anonymity

Anonymity is a stricter form of privacy than confidentiality, as the identity of the participant
remains unknown to the research team.2 This is more difficult to achieve than confidentiality as
participants in the context of social research are usually known to the program coordinator.1
