HW2 Solution

This document contains the homework solutions for Introduction to Bioinstrumentation and Bioimaging. Question 1 involves Gaussian beam optics and interference calculations for a laser beam focused by a lens. Question 2 involves calculations for an optical coherence tomography system using a Michelson interferometer. The solutions include determining spot sizes, beam sizes, output powers, and the thickness of a polymer film placed in one arm of the interferometer.

BIEN 3410 Introduction to Bioinstrumentation and Bioimaging

(Fall semester – Year 2022–2023)

Homework 2 solution

Question 1 (Gaussian Beam Optics and Interference): (2.0 mark)

A 100-mW Gaussian beam from an argon laser (wavelength of 514.5 nm) has a diameter of 1.0 mm, and
is focused by a 10 cm focal length lens with a diameter 2.5 cm.

(a) Determine the spot size at the focus of the lens

(b) Determine the largest beam size within the Rayleigh range

(c) Repeat (a) and (b) if the beam is first expanded to fill the entire lens area

Answer:
(a)

𝑓𝜆0
𝑤2 =
𝜋𝑤1

0.1 ∙ 514.5 × 10−9

𝑤2 = m = 32.8 μm
𝜋 ∙ 0.5 × 10−3

Spot size = 2w2 = 65.5 µm

(b) Largest beam size appears at the boundary of the Rayleigh range → when w = √𝟐𝒘𝟐

Therefore, the largest beam size = √𝟐 ∙ 𝟐𝒘𝟐 = 92.6 µm

(c)
0.1 ∙ 514.5 × 10−9
𝑤2 = m = 1.31 μm
𝜋 ∙ 0.0125

(a) Spot size = 2w2 = 2.62 µm

(b) Largest beam size = √𝟐 ∙ 𝟐𝒘𝟐 = 3.71 µm

Question 2 (Optical Coherence Tomography): (3.0 marks)

A 10mW laser beam at 532 nm is input to a Michelson interferometer with the two arm lengths matched
(lR = 30 cm, lS = 31 cm). Assume that the laser is perfectly coherent and the splitting ratio of the
Beamsplitter is (Transmission: reflection = 80:20).

(a) What is the output power of the interferometer?

(b) If mirror M1 is moved further up such that lR = lS, the output power reaches its maximum. What is
this maximum output power? What are the positions of the next maximum and minimum if the mirror
M1 keeps moving up?
(c) Consider both M1 and M2 are fixed and the arm lengths are identical. When a very thin polymer film
(refractive index = 1.8) is placed in one of the two arms. The output power is 1.77mW. What is the
thickness of the polymer? (**Assume both sides of the thin film is AR-coated, i.e. no reflection at the
polymer-air interface)
(d) A broadband LED (Gaussian spectrum; center wavelength = 532 nm, bandwidth= 50 nm) is used as
the light source in this setup, and we fix lS = lR + Δ. Sketch the output signal with labels.
Answer:
(a)
(b)

(c)

(d) for output signal
