Course Title : Ethics of engineering

Engineering Ethics
Ethics of engineering is a term which is used for decisions and moral issues

taken by an organization working with an engineering organization. Engineering ethics

is not like general ethics consisting of morality. It is professional ethics. Engineering

ethics are standards which are set only for professionals and they can only be learned

in a professional school or institute. These play an important role and are considered as

a part of professional education because these let the students deal with problems they

are facing in professional life and practice. Engineering ethics must be taught using

cases, not the disasters or news, but with practical situations to which an engineer

encounter. Engineering ethics takes into account the moral ideas, characters and

policies of the organizations and companies which involve technological information.

Engineers do engineering and their work affects the people around them and

across the world. If engineering ethics considers the fact that how do engineer or

workers affect the people while practicing their profession, then engineering ethics

should be an essential part of the education in professional responsibilities like it is in

other fields like doctor or lawyer. The objective of engineering ethics is to increase your

ability as engineers to confront responsibly moral issues raised by technological activity.

There are many cases available which can be analyzed and taught. Many people are in

favor of ethics in technical education but there are strong arguments about it also.

In this universe, there are some morals and everyone wants to follow and obey

these morals. For example, we learned since our childhood not to tell a lie, not to beat

anyone, not to kill, not to beat and not to steal. These are general cases that everyone

is taught to be aware of. While exceptions are present in different cases, for example,

self-defense is allowed and if a person kills someone defending himself, there is a

margin depending upon the situation. Professional ethics comprise those ethics, which

every professional person wants other professional members to follow. Engineering

ethics are only applied for engineers, not to any other profession.

Engineering ethics is necessary because there has been a long list of

happenings and tragedies, in which engineers have played a big role and something,

must be done to stop these bad happenings. Engineers must be aware of these

unwanted happenings and they can learn from their past experience.

Fundamental Principles

Engineers should show honor, integrity of their profession by:

 By showing their skill and knowledge for humanity.

 Should show honesty; serve the people and their clients.

 Should show only services in areas of their competence.

 Engineers should avoid deceptive acts.

 Engineers should declare public statements only in truthful manner.

 Engineers should approve only those profiles in which he has expertise and can

provide solutions to the client.

Fundamental Canons

1. Engineers should show services in which he has better skills.

2. Engineers should avoid deceptive acts.

3. Engineers should associate with reputable organizations.

4. Engineers should declare statements only in truthful manner.

5. Engineers should behave themselves lawfully, responsibly and honorably to

increase the honor and reputation of the profession.

6. Engineers should have high ideals of professional integrity.

7. Engineers should build their professional reputation on the merit of their services.

8. Engineers should consider environmental impact in the performance of their

professional duties.

9. Engineers should avoid or disclose conflict of interest situations.

10. Engineers should expose unethical conduct by other engineering practitioners.

11. Engineers should be honorable to the practitioners and the engineering

profession

12. Engineers should be fair and loyal to stakeholders.

13. Engineers should hold duty to the public as paramount.

14. Engineer should behave with a client as faithful agents or trustees.

15. Engineers should fulfill all of its requirements with great honor.
Responsibilities of Engineers

The engineer recognizes that the greatest merit is the work so he should keep

your experienced in his profession so that he may be able to compete yourself with

others. Engineers must continuously increase their knowledge especially in his

profession in which he is more skilled. It is the responsibility of the engineer who carried

out their work efficiently and supports the laws. Engineers should not select the work in

which he has no idea and cannot fulfill all the requirements. He should reject that work

with honestly. Engineers always should work for humanity and he should respect his

clients and talk with his customers with politely. Engineers should make a good decision

with his experience.

IEEE code of Ethics

The members of the IEEE should recognize the importance of our technologies

in making our life very effective all over the world, and in accepting a personal

obligation to our profession and all the members of IEEE will conduct highest ethical

and professional manner in life and agree:

1. To accept responsibility in making engineering decisions consistent with safety,

health, and welfare of the public, and to disclose promptly factors that might

endanger the public or the environment. They will avoid real conflicts of interest
whenever possible & to disclose them to affected parties when they do exist.

2. Engineer will become honest and realistic in defining estimates based on

available data.

3. To reject bribery in all of its forms.

4. Engineers will improve themselves in understanding of technology; its application

and potential consequences.

5. Engineers will improve technical competence and to undertake technological

tasks for others only if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure

of pertinent limitations.

6. Engineers will accept and offer honest criticism of technical work, to

acknowledge and correct errors, and to credit properly the contributions of

others.

7. Engineers will treat fairly all persons regardless of factors such as gender, age,

race, disability, religion, or national origin.

8. Engineers will avoid teasing others, their property, reputation, or employment by

false or malicious action.

9. To assist co-workers and colleagues in their professional development and to

support them in following this code of ethics.

Steps to Problem Solving in Engineering Ethics

1. State the Problem:

 Engineers should clearly define the exact nature of an ethical problem. Need to

be clear so that we can anticipate the kind of solution that is required. Want to

provide an answer that is relevant to the interests at stake.

2. Get the Facts:

 Engineers must possess and understand the relevant facts. Engineers must

make clear any interpretations of factual matters or the values that underlie

conflicting moral viewpoints.

3. Defined Viewpoints:

 Critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of competing moral viewpoints.

Engineers must be able to justify the course of action.

4. Formulate an Opinion:

 As engineers we do not have the luxury of postponing questions or leaving a

question unresolved. Then Decide which of the plausible viewpoints is the most

compelling. The committee approach (voting) is advantageous because the

decision is representative of the general public.

profession or deceive the public.

 Engineers should not accept financial or other considerations, including free

engineering designs, from material or equipment suppliers for specifying their

product.

 Engineers should, whenever possible, name the person or persons who may be

individually responsible for designs, inventions, writings, or other

The Conclusion

It is concluded that

 Engineers should be reliable.

 Engineers should conduct themselves honorably.

 Engineers should hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the

public.

 Engineers should cooperate with their clients and treat them with politely.

 Engineers should provide skills in those subjects in which engineers have

expertise.

So Engineering ethics is a critical area of study that examines the moral and

ethical responsibilities of engineers. It involves understanding the ethical

implications of technological advancements and ensuring that individuals are not

harmed by technological products or processes. By maintaining high ethical

standards, engineers can build trust and confidence with society, promoting the

responsible use of technology and contributing to a safer and more just world.
