CASE-BASED QUESTIONS (4x3=12)
34. Read the extract given below and answer the questions: 4
Ideas of national unity in early-nineteenth century Europe were closely
allied to the ideology of liberalism. For the new middle classes liberalism
stood for freedom for the individual and equality of all before the law.
Yet, equality before the law did not necessarily stand for universal
suffrage. You will recall that in revolutionary France, which marked the
first political experiment in liberal democracy, the right to vote and to get
elected was granted exclusively to property-owning men. Men without
property and all women were excluded from political rights. Only for a
brief period under the Jacobins did all adult males enjoy suffrage.
However, the Napoleonic Code went back to limited suffrage and
reduced women to the status of a minor, subject to the authority of
fathers and husbands. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries women and non-propertied men organised opposition
movements demanding equal political rights.

34.1 Explain the term ‘liberalism’. 1

34.2 State any one ideology of liberalism during early 19th century. 1
34.3 Describe any two features of Napoleonic Code. 2

35. Read the extract given below and answer the questions: 4
Democracies are based on political equality. All individuals have equal
weight in electing representatives. Parallel to the process of bringing
individuals into the political arena on an equal footing, we find growing
economic inequalities. A small number of ultra-rich enjoy a highly
disproportionate share of wealth and incomes. Not only that, their share
in the total income of the country has been increasing. Those at the
bottom of the society have very little to depend upon. Their incomes have
been declining. Sometimes they find it difficult to meet their basic needs
of life, such as food, clothing, house, education and health. In actual life,
democracies do not appear to be very successful in reducing economic
inequalities.

35.1 How is democracy based on political equality in India? 1

35.2 What is meant by economic inequality? 1
35.3 ‘Democracies do not appear to be very successful in reducing 2
economic inequalities.’ Justify the statement.

36. Read the extract given below and answer the questions: 4
In the past two to three decades, more and more MNCs have been
looking for locations around the world which would be cheap for their
production. Foreign investment by MNCs in these countries has been
rising. At the same time, foreign trade between countries has been rising
rapidly. A large part of the foreign trade is also controlled by MNCs.

36.1 Where do MNCs prefer to set up their offices and factories? 1

36.2 How do MNCs control their production in other countries? 1
36.3 ‘Foreign trade between countries has been rising rapidly.’ How does 2
foreign trade integrate the markets of different countries? Mention any
two.
