Title Milestone: Grade Booster

Timeline Week 5
Create a function model that represents your performance in your
Objectives
assessments based on the time that you spent on social media.
Tools Notebook, Pen, Dictionary, and Calculator

1. You have come so far. Now is the time to apply everything you have learned about
derivatives by performing the Milestone: Grade Booster.

2. For this milestone, you need to monitor the number of hours you spend on social
media the day before an assessment. You have to do this for two weeks.

3. Denote your score as variable Y and the number of hours you spend on social media
as variable t.

4. Record your scores as follows:

Number of hours spent in

Subject Assessment Score (Y) social media prior to the
assessment (t)

5. Make sure to record at least 3 assessments for this task. Assessments are not limited
to your Calculus class.

6. We will assume that the relationship of variables Y and t is quadratic in form, i.e.,
2
𝑌 = 𝑎𝑡 + 𝑏𝑡 + 𝑐.

7. Choose 3 pairs from your monitoring sheet above. For each pair (Y,t), substitute these
values to the quadratic equation. Since you have 3 pairs of (Y,t), you will have 3
equations in 3 unknown variables a, b, and c.

8. Your first task is to find the values of a, b, and c using the methods that you’ve
learned in General Math and Pre-calculus. After determining the values of a, b, and c,
2
you now substitute them to the equation 𝑌 = 𝑎𝑡 + 𝑏𝑡 + 𝑐.
9. Your next task is to find the value for t that will maximize the value for Y. You will have
to use the optimization technique used in class. This means that you have to identify
the number of hours that you must spend on social media in order for you to
maximize your assessment scores.

10. Use a long size bond paper for your solutions.

11. Your milestone will be checked using the rubric below. You need to reach level 3 on all
