Social media is a huge platform for vast networks of users that enables them to be

informed, entertained and be connected with each other online. Together with the rise of social

media is its uncontrolled usage amongst teenagers which was the main focus of this study. This

study generally aims to identify the influence of uncontrolled usage of social media to students’

sleeping habit. The researchers used typical sampling method as a way to select the participants

who were from the Senior High School Department of Far Eastern University-Diliman. Two

sessions of focus group discussions were held to obtain the needed data.

The gathered data revealed that there is a direct link between the use of social media

before bedtime and the lack of sleep of the students.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Technology, an innovational application of sciences, is made for humans to help them

with their manual labor in many terms, in order to make lives easier and aid them with the fast

completion of products, services and/or accomplishments of objectives. Technology started since

the Paleolithic age and continually evolved until today. Tools were invented and upgraded for

agriculture, to help farmers specifically with their jobs. As well as wheels for transportation for

easy travel within places. In one of these many fields, technologies with the communication

between people were thriving.

Social beings treat communication as a vital part of their nature and see it as a necessity

to improve the society, share information and contribute ideas to the world. Back then, people

use body language and/or sign language more often than verbal communication for them to

communicate as language was yet to be invented. Written correspondence was also used as the

earliest form of postal services dating back to 550 B.C. This delivery system would soon become

widespread in future periods. This supports the point that technologies were also made for fast

spreading of knowledge and improving simple communication with people within far places.

In the early years of 1970s, Samuel Morse, along with other creators, made the

Telegraph, working as yet another long-distance communication method; at the same time

revolutionizing the way communication worked. As time went on, methods of communication

!1
developed further. In the year 1890, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first U.S. patent for the

invention of the telephone, to which resulted to the steady progress of communication methods.

Technology started to change rapidly starting in the early 20th century as the first computers were

invented.

Because of the human knowledge evolving and the brain being used further, the earliest

form of the internet was developed. The internet is a global system of interconnected computer

networks that links devices worldwide. Originally, it was initially used for military purposes

where a camp can easily communicate with other camps through it. After being used for military

purposes, Tim Berners-Lee began writing the globally known World Wide Web which is the first

web browser. After the creation of the World Wide Web, everything else followed; until people

started to use the internet for communicating with people around the world. This was when the

earliest form of social media came to life. Electronic mails were developed during this time.

However, by the early 1970s, networking technologies were being improved; and by 1980,

computers were becoming common in households. social media became more sophisticated and

polished. With that, social media became more rampant to the masses, acquiring its popularity

well into the 1990s (Hendricks, 2013).

Upon the invention of blogging in the year 1999, popular websites such as MySpace and

LinkedIn gained popularity to the public in the early 2000s. Thus, more websites started being

created, therefore, further making the internet a home for communicating with other people in

farther places. Today, there are still tremendous social networking sites around the internet. Some

would just require you to type in some key words from the latest news; or, the dramas and shows

!2
many would like to watch in Netflix are already there to entertain the users as they only have to

click the search button. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and etc., serves as virtual photo albums of

many people. Dating sites are now prominent to the people whom are single and looking for their

significant other like Tantan, Tinder, Chemistry.com, and the like. In order to do so, all they

would need is to create an account, and find someone who match your preferences in the website

and the user will find his or her partner in just a matter of seconds (Aguilar, 2016).

This cluster of social networking sites creates an environment which garnered the

attention of teenagers, most especially, students. Unlike previous generation, technological

advances have created a big impact to the generation’s upbringing. In day-to-day circumstances,

teenagers are often found in front of their own gadgets, spending about almost nine hours a day

with digital technology, hence, forgetting the time as they keep on browsing to their social media

accounts.

However, despite this fast sharing of knowledge, videos, and possible bluffs that can go

viral, social networking platforms posed negative effects on teens. This is especially to those

who are currently studying. Some etiquettes are also forgotten as teenagers are more into their

social media while eating as they have their mobile phones with them. Sometimes, they forget to

do their school activities, as social media is their priority. Even though posts in the social

networking sites are getting toxic, they still find that this is where they can express their

emotions.

However, the unmonitored usage of social networking sites has caused an issue to many

people. Though advanced, it may seem that the era of advanced technology had reach

!3
reclusiveness. This unmonitored social media usage has caused many effects, most of which are

particularly negative than positive. For instance, it exposes their eyes to blue light which could

gradually affect the eyes; moreover, teenagers forget and/or procrastinate their sleep, thus lacking

energy the next day. It somehow became a habit to them, as they also tend to use the social media

to lull them to sleep. However, it does not get them to sleep as it most likely causes insomnia. In

the end, teenagers cannot sleep until their thirst for social media is satisfied. This adds more

problem to which the researchers are to find solutions for.

In this study, the researchers would determine what help can be provided in order to

improve the students’ sleeping habit by taking into account that many may have had reached an

unknowing uncontrolled usage of social media. This will create changes in the students’ sleeping

habits, preventing future problems regarding lack of sleep. Hence, the researchers will be

investigating further regarding this issue through specifying the influences of uncontrolled social

media usage to the sleeping habits of students.

!4
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research is conducted to know and provide information regarding the influences of

uncontrolled social media usage to the sleeping habits of students and the researchers aim to give

answers and suggestions to the following questions:

1. What are the factors that lead students to uncontrolled social media usage?

2. What are the possible influences of uncontrolled usage of social media to the students’

sleeping habits?

3. What are the suggestions that we can provide to students in order to control their usage

of social media?

!5
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Social Media somehow became necessary for people to use every single day for

communication. It is mostly to those people who need to collaborate with others whom are far

away. Despite its advantages, social media also entertains people and may be overused

unknowingly, most especially at night. Thus, resulting to an uncontrolled usage. Owing to the

fact that students would delay their sleeping time in order to use social networking sites more.

Through this study, the researchers would be able to help identify the effects of

uncontrolled use of social media and give the corresponding benefits to the following people:

TO THE STUDENTS. For the main subject of the study, this study would help students

confirm their lack of management over usage of social media, this determines if one is really not

controlled. In addition to this, the study allows students to have useful information regarding the

negative effects of using gadgets for social media late at night by following certain suggestions

into improving their sleeping habits. This can help them learn how to lessen and limit their

usage, most especially before going to sleep. Hence, affecting further contributing factors for

their productivity the next day, in this case, their duration and quality of sleep.

TO THE EDUCATORS/THE SCHOOL FACULTY. This would give the school

faculty an insight in order to understand the students. Just like the parents, the study can provide

more knowledge to the faculty. With the said information, this can help them to influence the

students to lessen their social media use, creating a healthier sleeping habit. In addition to this,

the results of the study may also be applicable to their daily lives as they can potentially be

excessively using their social media unknowingly.

!6
TO THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION. This study can provide information that can

be used in a way that the institution could possibly make actions to prevent these from

happening. The school may provide programs such as having seminars about the proper usage of

social media and its effects to the users. Furthermore, this can help students gain more

knowledge about the dangers of excessive use of social media. Therefore, making students

become more productive and have better sleeping habits.

TO THE PARENTS. This study’s benefits are not only limited to students alone, but it is

also applicable to the minority of parents who may have the same case. This would also give

them the benefit to guide their children and give ideas that would help them sleep easily at night,

and to have a pleasant sleeping habit, and be able to keep track of their social media usage.

TO THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS. By the end of this research, future researchers

would be able to come up with ideas and conduct further research on how to improve the

student’s quality of sleep, and hopefully minimize the problems that students would have to go

through that has regards to their time of sleep.

!7
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study is to know the influences of the uncontrolled usage of the social

media sites or applications to the sleeping schedule of the senior high school students studying in

Far Eastern University-Diliman and determining the reason why most of them preferred scrolling

in their mobile phone and entertaining themselves with social media. This includes the effects of

using gadgets for social media during sleeping hours, and its positive and negative effects to a

student. Not only that, but it shows student’s outlook on effects and results of using social media

late at night. This, however, will no longer cover the students’ performance, the health of the

teenagers, and the long-term disorders one may have. It is only restricted only to a student’s

potential overuse and its effect on one’s sleeping schedule.

The research coverage is only limited to the senior high school students of FEU-Diliman

regardless of the sex and with age ranging from 15-20. Who mostly and/or solely rely to the use

of social media for communication, academic purposes, and entertainment.

The students’ personal information such as the name, age and gender will be kept highly

confidential and in between the research and the participants only.

The primary method of data gathering would be the focused group discussions, wherein

the participant/s will meet the researchers and discuss their thoughts about their overuse through

answering a series of questions asked by the researchers. Another method would be interviewing

certain participants to also determine their reasons, insights, and opinions on how social media

usage late at night affects one’s sleeping schedule.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the ideas, articles and previous studies for us to be able to come up

with postulations to the aforementioned problems. Those that were included in this chapter helps

in familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study. The following

related literature may also be of help to the future researchers in acquiring extensive knowledge

about the study.

The factors of uncontrolled social media usage.

One of the factors includes the use of technology for academic purposes. “Educational

facilities use the term "online learning" as a gateway toward acquiring knowledge that can be

acquired within a classroom” (Stanford, 2016); Some learning institutions do require online

platforms in e-learning meaning a student may check one’s account whenever one wants to, and

this may include even the time before sleeping. On the other hand, some learning institutions do

not really require these; but it has still became somewhat a necessity to students in learning; for

them to be able to communicate in long-distances. “They use these technologies to improve the

learning process. Social media helps them to seeking educational information to complete tasks

and develop skills [such as] grammar, vocabulary knowledge, listening, writing and reading to

learn foreign languages. A considerable part of students use social networks to post notices about

school, promoting their success in school, practicing foreign language with native speakers and

talking with friends often for solving their homework.” (Tartari, 2015) As some students are very

academic and grade-concious, they tend to use social media in order to be updated as well

!12
communicate with their fellow students for academic reasons as easy-communication is offered

by these applications.

Another factor states lacking social interaction and relationship may also be a factor to

this; “Lack of friends, social necessity of social media and feeling of fulfillment” Aksoy, M.E.

(2018). A study conducted by Science Daily (2016) suggested that “being exposed to extremely

flawless depiction of peers on social networking site provokes feelings of resentment and a

skewed belief system, making us think that they lead a much more contended and successful

lives.” Lacking of friends and checking other people via social media would make one person

very insecure about oneself, thinking about the things he/she may not have; Thus, browsing the

social media to have overviews and insights regarding other people’s lifestyle to improve one’s

own. “Teenagers also spoke about the pressure they felt to make themselves available 24/7 and

the resulting anxiety if they did not respond immediately to texts or posts.” (Udorie, J., 2015).

Moreover, students think that replying late to their friends or fellow classmates would lead to

negative circumstances and/or consequences they do not want in their social life; thus

constanstly checking their phones for alerts and notifications. It has also found that “Teens are so

emotionally invested in social media that a fifth of secondary school pupils will wake up at night

and log on, just to make sure they do not miss out.”. (Udorie, J. 2015). They become very

dependent to it due to how they develop themselves to have the kind of excessive habit of

checking their phone every second and minute whereas it is often deriving from what is

commonly known as the fear of missing out or FOMO. Thinking that every moment spent not

browsing their social media, a huge event or happening has happened without one’s knowledge.

They also mainly focus and rely on technology and the internet, instead of leaning practical

!13
knowledge and expertise of everyday life (Torrevillas, 2017). Thus browsing to gain more

knowledge and to be able to still be relevant to the current trends of the society. With this, it is

also relevant and may found obvious that “Students cope by using social media as a way of

relieving stress” (Hansen, 2018). This means that after a long and tiring day; using their phone is

the only way for them to relieve stress while lying on their own bed; using their gadgets. For it

is also stated that “[they] use social media to relieve day-to-day stress.” Whiting, Anita and

Williams (2013) Unknowing that they are affecting themselves through blue light exposure and

is gradually being used to sleeping late after being ignorant of the passing time. “The brain is

tricked, having it think that it is daytime hence interrupting the process of winding-down before

falling asleep and keep teens aware far longer” (Hansen 2018). This clearly indicates that the

lights emitted by our phone plays a major role in keeping you awake instead of winding-down

for “blue light increases alertness and suppresses melatonin, a hormone responsible in winding

you down and making you sleep.” Von Thaden, 2018

Observing these factors, it is concluded that social pressure is the main root or cause of

every one’s social media use. Student’s are presumably not contented with their lives and thus

checking other people’s social media accounts thinking that they are leading a more prosperous

life than theirs when in fact, in reality, it is otherwise; While on the process of using the gadget

and being insecure about oneself, one has become ignorant of the time running unbeknownst to

them and thus resulting to overusage.

!14
The possible influences of uncontrolled usage of social media to the students

First, Deficiency in Sleep, “spending countless hours on social networking sites may

divert attention and focus on particular tasks.” (Torrevillas 2017). In this case, sleeping. They

show tendencies to prolong their use of it for entertainment for the time being, initially intending

to use it only for a short amount of time thus unknowingly delaying their bedtime. Low sleep

quality is also its influence for “continuous or even and especially discontinuous light

stimulation (of uncontrolled usage) during the night is a related source to disrupted sleep quality,

which may have a potential effects on daytime functioning” (Xu et al, 2015) as well as sleepiness

throughout the next day, the delayed bedtime and shorter sleep time are more consistently related

to the excessive usage of social media. Sleep disruption and inadequate sleep result to daytime

sleepiness, irregularity of sleep, most especially sleeping daytime, may cause a delayed sleeping

schedule than the usual expected time of sleep thus, habitually and gradually ruining one’s body

clock.

Knowing these, for this research, the study would be able to warn the students in subject

of what would happen or the influences especially the negative ones that they would find very

problematic in the future and thus raising awareness and expanding their knowledge. Having

better knowledge about the study may also give students warnings about excessive use of social

media, most particularly, regarding their sleep as well as expand and further their understanding

about the negative effects, reducing the chances of causing future problems.

!15
Ways to control their social media usage.

Ariana Huffington, the successful founder of Huffington Post practices an hour before

bedtime, she charges and/or keep her devices away from her bedroom. She then takes a bath with

Epsom Salt, Lavender Oils and Candles as it calms and clears one’s mind. She also suggests for

people to read poetry books and novels, however, keeping in mind to not read things about media

climate and politics as it will help with improving the mood before sleep to have a better

sleeping schedule. Bill Gates, on the other hand, winds down by doing chores such as washing

the dishes, tidying up, and taking out the trash. Limiting the time you spend on social networking

sites can improve both work and personal life. This increases your focus on the important things

and less of the unimportant ones. (2018) Using applications that will help limit the use of your

gadgets will also help you keep track of time. Secondly, Raj Dash (2010) suggests in an article

featured in Adweek that culling your network can improve one’s fear of missing out. That “even

though social media plays a large part in my daily work, I still do not approve every friend

request.” Cutting down the rate of accepting friend requests lowers the feel of being obligated to

follow that particular person online. The use of lists and filter features on both Twitter and

Facebook can give you a quick overview of the updates of only the important people you follow.

In this way, only the relevant updates will be given shown, cutting down the time of surfing the

internet.

Overall, seeking ways to interact with family and friends, or even just by yourself outside

of social media can be a big factor in limiting the use of social media. Keeping in touch with

reality is a great factor in reminding a person to stay grounded.

!16
Because of this, people especially students would be able to know what certain practices

they can do and add unto their life for improving the duration of their sleep as well as enhancing

its quality for the next day thus leading to much healthier lifestyle from having a nice sleeping

habit.

The literature the researchers found and included in this study help find solutions for the

three abovementioned problems, These gave further information to the researchers by indicating

that anxiety, stress and pressure one is feeling leads to uncontrolled social media usage, an

activity that may be done before bedtime when repeated consecutively overtime, may affects

their sleeping habit hence, irregularity on one’s body clock may be pronounced promoting

negative influences such as deficiency of sleep and poor sleep quality on an individual. Further

affecting more factors in life of the student that is not covered by the study any longer. The

review also suggests practices for improvement of the sleeping lifestyle of the student.

!17
Conceptual Framework

A focus group discussion about the

students’ social media usage and their
sleeping habits.

Interpretation of data and

Analysation

Identifying factors of uncontrolled social media and its influencesto students’

sleeping habits and provide suggestions to improve students’ sleeping habit

Paradigm 1 “The Process of the Research”

On this process, the researchers would be gathering data through focus group discussions

about the students’ habits before sleeping. After the gathering of data, next step would be

interpreting the data gathered such as the variety of activities in students’ lifestyles before sleep

and finally, tackle each and every factor and its influences as well as suggest a resolution for the

students.

!18
CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the process of the research, on how the researchers gathered the

necessary data that was used for the entire study. This would describe who were the participants

as well as provide information relating to the methods that were used in tackling this research

including the stages of the data gathering which consists of the following: the selection of

participants, data collection, tools, strategies, approach and process used for the systematic and

validated data collected along with the data analysis that enabled the researchers to identify the

variables needed in order to find answers, resolutions and provide suggestions on solving the

problem.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study explored the influences of uncontrolled usage of social media by students,

most particularly in their sleeping habits thus the research design that was applied to the study

was phenomenology as it identifies and explains a common shared experience among people,

mostly students of whom are the subject of the study and for this focus group discussion

technique was used to gather data wherein the researchers first prepared a set of questions as a

guide on gathering the data and information to formulate a diagnosis and resolution for the

problems then conducted the discussion proper with the senior high school students who were

selected in order to identify important variables and explore situations and instances relating to

their uncontrolled social media usage and sleeping habits the participants experience thereof.

!19
RESEARCH LOCALE

The research was conducted inside the Far Eastern University-Diliman College Library at

11:30 o’ clock, April 10 and 11 2019 for batch one and two respectively.

POPULATION AND SAMPLES OF THE STUDY

The total population of Far Eastern University - Diliman Senior High School Department

is 1,300 students. However due to limited time and complicating schedules between the two

parties, the researchers selected ten participants only from whichever strand of any sex to take

part on the study.

In selecting these participants, The purposive sampling was used; specifically, the typical

case sampling method. The researchers approached ten potential participants whom met the

followig criteria for inclusion to the study:

• Within the age range of 15 to 18. This would be an easier route for both the researchers and

participants to relate to one another as the researchers are around the same age at the time of

data collection.

• Senior High School Students studying at Far Eastern University-Diliman.

After the selection, the participants were divided thereafter according to their sex hence

the researchers conducted two discussions at a different time to create a comfortable atmosphere

for both sexes for increased productivity during the discussion.

!20
INSTRUMENTS OF THE STUDY

The medium of gathering the data is by conducting a focus group discussion. Following

are the instruments presented to the adviser as well as the participants to support the activity, all

arranged consecutively according to the time of usage. Timetable, to clarify the corresponding

tasks to be done within each day of the week; two-paged letter to participants, which includes a

formal invitation and a request for permission to record the discussion; letter to the educator, if

by any chance the two researchers need to be excused during class to conduct a discussion; the

research questions, a set of questions approved by the research counselor; and finally, an iPad for

recording the statements and data given by the participants.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

Prior to conducting the research, a timetable was presented not only to give guidance to

the researchers but to also ensure the counselor that the data collection would be conducted

smoothly within the given time frame.

Then, the selection of participants. Two groups consisting of five students each are

selected to be the participants for batch one; a batch that consists a girl-only dynamic and batch

two that consists a boy-only dynamic for day one, April 10 and day two April 11 respectively of

data gathering. The morning of their expected discussion, before the students’ homeroom subject,

around 7:00-7:30, the researchers gave the participants their own copies of the letter for

participation as well as the following letter that requests their permission thereof, This would

ensure the legality and the formality of the data collection through Focus Group Discussion.

!21
For the discussion proper, the two parties met at the college library of the school

providentially on both parties’ second break around 1:00-1:30. The researchers brought an iPad

to record the conversation and thereafter commence the activity. The research questions was used

as a guide; starting with the engagement questions, to build a rapport to the participants as well

as maintain a nice atmosphere needed to collect efficient data. Then followed with the

exploration questions, which was designed by using an open-end questions towards the

possibility of unknowing much about the phenomenon of uncontrolled social media usage; and

finally the end questions, to properly close the said discussion.

The discussion was recorded and transcribed using a clean-verbatim style of transcription

the day after in accordance to the timetable. The procedure and timetable was followed and the

data collection was done smoothly.

DATA PROCESSING PROCEDURE

Using the data gathered. The researchers examine the transcription of the discussion

made to look for valuable information that would help in formulating the findings and conclusion

of the study using qualitative techniques. With this, suggestions can be provided thereafter in

addressing the issues faced by the students. Moreover, this gives the researchers the ability to

structure the data collected in a way that may satisfy the accomplishment of research objectives.

With this performed analysis, the researchers will be able to identify the factors contributing to

one’s social media usage as well as its influences to the sleeping habit of a student.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

As uncontrolled social media usage is very rampant to our society nowadays, the

researchers conducted a study to further understand the influences of uncontrolled social

media usage to the sleeping habits of most students. In order to do this, the researchers

conducted a Focus Group Discussion with ten participants from the senior high school

students of Far Eastern University-Diliman with ages ranging from 15 to 18 regardless of sex

to give information for the study of the phenomenon hence phenomenology research design is

used. These data is reviewed and analyzed by the researchers to formulate the findings of the

study and provide a resolution for the problem thereof by namely specifically discerning the

factors that lead students to uncontrolled social media use and finding the possible influences

of the uncontrolled usage of social media to the student’s sleeping habits.

From determining the factors of uncontrolled social media usage basing on the

responses of the students, the researchers analyzed its influences to their sleeping habits and

provided suggestions to possibly lessen the problem. Following are the results the researchers

obtained from the data gathering that was conducted on 10th and 11th of month of April 2019.

The factors of uncontrolled social media usage.

As the discussion went, all of the participants use their gadgets before bedtime. Their

use of social media before bedtime would average from two to five hours, and would often be

longer depending on their schedule. When asked what they use social media for, most would

!23
say that it’s because of their schoolworks, entertainment, boredom and relationship as a way

for them to do their responsibilities and “a way of relieving stress” Hansen, (2018)

To start, schoolworks are observed to be done by the students in the evening, basing on

the responses that indicated likewise. This is because according to Tartari last 2015, “they use

these technologies to improve the learning process.” Therefore improving their way of

acquiring knowledge regarding something one want to have deep understanding on. They also

tend to use it for communication and to receive news related to their academics. Tartari also

indicated that “a considerable part of students use social networks to post notices about school

and talking with friends often for solving their homework.” (Tartari, 2015) confirming their

use of social media a way to help themselves with their studies stating “The reasons why I use

social media at night, is to update myself what will be happening on the next day.”, “To talk to

my friends and ask them if there are any assignments or anything.” and finally, “The reason I

use technology is because there are reasons that I really need to do and [being] online helps

me do it.” These responses prove that one of the factors of uncontrolled social media usage

before bedtime is that because it is known to be an efficient learning tool for students in terms

of helping one to be able to gather information and research online for sources as well as an

effective communicator that students depend on mostly for the sake of their academics and

other school-related activities such as being updated on news relating to their classes and

subjects taken.

Seeking entertainment is also found to be one of the factors why students use social

!24
media which reduce their stress in the academics by diving unto an online world where it is

entertaining and can provide relaxation. One participant stated “kasi ako, naeentertain ako sa

mga binabasa ko and kaya stress reliever din po.” (For me, what I read online entertains me.

And it’s my stress reliever.) and others affirmed that browsing social media is effective in

reducing stress by “watching videos that I really like”, “by entertaining me”, by “talking to

my girlfriend” and by “talking to my friends” another one supports this by saying “I think

nahehelp niyang I wind down yung thinking natin since masyado tayong stressed throughout

the day parang nagiging passive nalang natin yung mga information so nagsosocial media

nalang tayo”(I think it helps us wind down our thinking since we’re too stressed out during

the day; It’s like we take in too much information impulsively which tires out our brains, so,

we resort to social media instead to stabilize it.) and being supported by the comment “But at

the same time, it helps people para makalimutan nila yung mga stress at problems nila.”(at

the same time, it helps people in forgetting their problems and stress too.) clearly indicating

relaxation is what the students desire, “it makes me feel relaxed” confirming Whiting, Anita

and Williams’s study last 2013, “[they] use social media to relieve day-to-day stress.” and

“they use social media to escape from the real world.” These responses and literature firmly

affirms that along with being used for the academics, it is mostly also used to entertain oneself

and to be able to relax after a stressful day hence one would result to relieve one’s stress by

checking out what is social media for a good laugh, entertainment and much more knowing it

makes one’s person’s body relax after spending a long-time of letting one’s body not doing any

!25
work thus resulting to students not knowing that it affects their sleeping schedule.

Lastly, some of the answers were “To check out on current events”, “Significant

Other” and “To ease boredom” of which we can relate to the students’ fear of missing out

(commonly known as FOMO). “Teenagers also spoke about the pressure they felt to make

themselves available 24/7 and the resulting anxiety if they did not respond immediately to

texts or posts.” (Udorie, J., 2015) leading students to think replying late would result to

negative consequences of relationships and being outdated thinking that every moment spent

not browsing their social media, a huge event is happening without one’s knowledge hence

making it clear that “Teens are so emotionally invested in social media that a fifth of

secondary school pupils will wake up at night and log on, just to make sure they do not miss

out.”(Udorie, J. 2015). This means that indeed FOMO is one of the factors of uncontrolled

social media usage in our daily life. Making students unconsciously check their phones from

time-to-time as well as respond immediately when received a notification. However, although

FOMO has been found to be a factor thereof, The data gathered have not duly supported the

idea of it being a major factor to overuse before bedtime thus the researchers did not consider

it as one of the factors that results one to overuse social media that may affects a students’

sleeping habit.

Prolonged usage is also often caused by “friends” or “bad-influence friends”,

“gossips”, and the “academics” as one participant stated that prolonged use “helps me

communicate more with my classmates, teachers, and more. And also, it helps me in my social

!26
life.” to support the aforementioned factors of uncontrolled usage of social media before

bedtime.

On the other hand, basing on the data given by the participants, little is also shown to

prove that lacking social interaction and relationship in real life is a factor to uncontrolled

social media usage before debtime thus, removing it to the list of possible factors that leads

students to overuse social media before bedtime.

However, it is still indubitable that with the increasing rise of technology, it has

become a part of a regular student’s life to rely on the use of technology for homework,

entertainment, and a way to relieve stress especially before bedtime.

The possible influences of uncontrolled usage of social media to the students

When asked, however, regarding the influences of the use of social media to the

sleeping habits of the students, little have stated it makes them sleepy but most have stated

that it keeps them from sleeping early stating “Lack of sleep. You don’t notice the time

anymore” and being “unable to sleep”. These support Torrevillas’s findings last 2017 which

states “spending countless hours on social networking sites may divert attention and focus on

particular tasks.” of which in this case, is sleeping. Using social media for a long time before

sleeping would cause you to not fall asleep as soon as possible thus prolonging your usage;

and the cause of this inability to sleep could also be supported by the findings of Xu et al last

2015 stating “continuous or even and especially discontinuous light stimulation (of

uncontrolled usage) during the night is a related source to disrupted sleep quality, which may

!27
have a potential effects on daytime functioning” duly supported by the response “I think when

it comes to our attention spans natin masyadong lumiliit kasi since masyadong passive yung

pag-intake natin ng information yung nawawala na yung focus natin pagdating kinabikasan

ganun.”(I think when it comes to our attention spans, it becomes shorter. It’s because we’re

passively intaking information, we lose our focus in the things that we do the next day.) One

response also includes, “waking up late the next day” thus making it very clear that inability

to comply to the target bedtime or can be commonly referred to as “delayed bedtime” is one of

the influences of uncontrolled social media usage meaning it reassures the researchers that the

delayed bedtime and shorter sleep time are more consistently related to the excessive usage of

social media; and in the meantime, this influence also extends for inadequate sleep result

would to daytime sleepiness and irregularity of sleep overtime thus, habitually and gradually

ruining one’s body clock.

While sleep deficiency is an another influence, ruining one’s body clock is also

mentioned and may also become a major influence on the student’s sleeping habit. To expand

this, a participant stated, “In terms of sleeping habits, I think the use of social media’s effect on

me would be negative. Sometimes, there are some effects that doesn’t really help me sleep.

Like the blue light that comes from phones and stuff. It doesn’t really help me sleep and it

makes my eyes itchy.)” which was supported by a respondent that states, “It makes my body

clock constantly changing and that is a bad thing.”

According to Hansen (2018), “The brain is tricked, having it think that it is daytime

!28
hence interrupting the process of winding-down before falling asleep and keep teens awake far

longer” meaning with the exposure to blue light, the students unknowingly train their brains

into thinking one is in a different time zone; making their brains think that it is daytime when

it is otherwise thus postponing the hormones responsible for inducing sleep in accordance to

Von Thaden, (2018) which says “blue light increases alertness and suppresses melatonin, a

hormone responsible in winding you down and making you sleep.” Von Thaden, (2018). This

concludes that using devices late at night without the use of blue-light filters or devices’

features which lessens blue-lights, your body would “remember” to only sleep during the

hours of which you regularly sleep, hours that are late because one’s sleeping is always

delayed after using social media too much.

Ways to control their social media usage.

With the rise of technology, it is getting harder for people to not use any form of

technology. It has become one of the basic needs. The researchers have asked the participants

suggestions on how to lessen the use of social media. A lot of the participants have suggested

to keep away from using gadget altogether especially after night. If there is a need to wind

down from the stress one is feeling, reading a book is a good alternative.

As one participant stated: “For me, dapat i-turn off na yung cellphone. Kasi it’s a big

factor kapag nakikita mo yung notifications na nagpopop up, parang ‘oh my God I need to

open this.’ So dapat talaga na iturn off na nila yung cellphone bago matulog.”(For me, we

should really turn off our cellphones. Because it’s a big factor whenever we see the

!29
notification popping up. It’s like ‘Oh my God, I need to open this.’ So, we really need to turn

off our phones before sleeping.) According to Ariana Huffington’s practice of charging her

devices away from her bedroom an hour before her target bedtime.

Like what was previously mentioned, the Fear of Missing Out has been an innate

action towards many of the teenagers currently causing them to check their phones every now

and then because of notifications, causing distraction inhibiting their sleep resulting to

difficulty on sleeping when one is trying to.

Therefore, really connecting back to one’s reality is the best way to lessen the usage of

social media. Being busy with things outside the world of social media creates a diversion for

a person, until it becomes a habit and the use of social media becomes minimal. In conclusion,

even small things like doing household chores and reading books can most definitely help

with the lessening of the use of social media. Until it becomes a habit and eventually lessening

the overall use of social media.

!30
CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The following chapter discusses the whole study. The objective of this research is to help

determine the factors and influences of using social media before sleeping to students’ sleeping

habits and to provide suggestions in order to lessen the problem of uncontrolled social media

usage resulting to irregular sleeping habit. A summary of the study is presented together with its

findings and is discussed and interpreted in this chapter.

Based on the discussion with the selected participants and the gathered literature, The

researchers found the factors of using social media before bedtime on Senior High School

Students of Far Eastern University-Diliman students that inlcudes using their gadgets in order to

alleviate stress and to accomplish school works.

For methodology, Phenomenology was used as the research design as social media use is

a phenomena occurring to most, if not all people. The researchers selected ten participants and

divided them to two groups with five students each to became a part of a focus group discussion

that was conducted. The questions asked in the conducted discussion was exclusively about the

exploring on the influences that could give information leading to the formulation of suggestions

by examining the differences responses the participants provided.

!31
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

After presenting and interpreting the data gathered from different sources, the findings of

the study are the following:

1. What are the factors that lead students to uncontrolled social media usage?

Most students would either use their gadgets and browse social media in order to

accomplish school works, alleviate stress through entertainment and update oneself on the news

and happening that may affect one. On the other hand, although FOMO is found to be one of the

factors of uncontrolled social media on daily lives of the people, the data gathered showed little

evidences to support the claim that FOMO is a major factor for the students to use social media

greatly before bedtime thus promoting delayed bedtime due to overusage of social media.

2. What are the possible influences of uncontrolled usage of social media to the

students’ sleeping habits?

Based on the literature and responses, The study found delayed bedtime of students as

one influence, for students tend to extend their time of usage for the satisfation of being relaxed

is still havem’t reach thus delaying their target bedtime to much later one.

Deficiency of sleep is also found to be one of its influence to the students’ sleeping habit

for continious overusage every night overtime as well as repeated delay of bedtime would put

much stress to an individual due to lack of sleep. These two would then result to ruining one’s

body-clock every night greatly affecting their sleeping habits.

!32
3. What are the suggestions that we can provide to students in order to control their

usage of social media?

Although it is obvious that a lot of good practices and lifestyle as well as discipline in self

is a great way for students to improve, One suggestion that the researchers affirms to suggest is

to keep your phone away during bedtime no matter what the reason is, this may include charging

your phones away, if possible, in a different room instead of your bedroom. This may appear

difficult at first, but thinking about the long-run, training yourself not to be updated before sleep

would encourage faster invitation to sleeping.

Another one is practicing alternative ways of entertainment, ways that may give you

relaxation and would also help you wind-down and prepare to sleep such as reading a book,

taking a warm shower or bath or even listening to calming music while doing your chores. A lot

can be done, one just have to take control of one’s action if they desire to sleep much sooner.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the researchers find that the factors that causes students to use social

media before bedtime are:

1. School works.

2. Entertainment.

3. For Updates.

4. Relaxation.

!33
The influence, on the ther hand, of this uncontrolled usage to students’ sleeping

habits are

1. Delayed Bedtime

2. Sleep Deficiency

3. Irregular Body Clock

The researchers suggests the following to promote going to bed in time for enough

sleeping time to the students.

1. Turning off their gadgets one hour before sleeping

2. Keeping away their devices

3. Trying other methods of entertainment, relaxation and stress-reliefs

4. Wind-down and prepare to sleep rather than making yourself busy

RECOMMENDATION

According to the findings of the study, the researchers recommended the following

TO THE STUDENTS, Practicing a much better lifestyle basing on the researchers’

suggestions to be able to have enough sleep and encourage maximum productivity the next day.

TO THE EDUCATORS/THE SCHOOL FACULTY. Conduct a seminar or an event

that educates the students about the imprtance of sleep, relieving stress and alternative methods

one could to have a healthy lifestyle.

!34
TO THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION. Help the faculty and the students to raise

awareness about the implications of deficiency of sleep among students.

TO THE PARENTS. Help their youngsters into practicing a healthy routine and lifestyle

inside their home by guiding and supervising them.

TO THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS. To help provide further information to the

subjects above by tackling about the health implications of lacking thereof, practices that may

lead to one’s improvement and much more especially those that are focusing on increasing a

student’s potential and productivity overall.
