1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student

Welcome to Abnormal Behaviour and Mental Health! May you find the experience of studying this module
stimulating and rewarding. We trust this module will prove to be interesting, informative, and useful. We
hope that it will contribute positively toward the achievement of your study goals.

Unisa, as a comprehensive open distance e-learning institution (CODeL), is moving towards becoming an
online institution. You will therefore see that all your study material, assessments and engagements with
your lecturer and fellow students will take place online. This tutorial letter is intended to offer you some
guidance in this regard. Previously a tutorial letter was our way of communicating with you about teaching,
learning and assessment. However, we are increasingly moving to the online platform and so you need to
access your learning platform daily for new communications from the university and your lecturers.

To enhance your experiences in mastering the knowledge contained in this module, you need to participate
actively on the PYC3702 Moodle Module (MyModules) discussion forum. Please do not leave curriculum
challenges unresolved for too long, as you will find that once you start falling behind your challenges will
escalate. Regularly check for important notices under ‘Announcements’ on the PYC3702 module page. All
study material is downloadable from myModules on the PYC3702 module page.

This tutorial letter (Tutorial Letter 101/3/2023) contains important information regarding the schedule of
work, resources, and assignments for this module. We urge you to read it carefully and to keep it at hand
when working through the study material, preparing for the assignments, and addressing questions to your
lecturers.

Tutorial Letters 501, 502, and 503 serve as your study guide for this module. These tutorial letters guide
you through your curriculum and contain the learning outcomes and references to the work to be studied
to achieve these outcomes.

Please read Tutorial Letter 301 in combination with Tutorial Letter 101 as it gives you an idea of important
general information when studying at a distance and within a particular College.

In Tutorial Letter 101/3/2023 you will find the assessment criteria as well as instructions on the preparation
and submission of the assignments. This tutorial letter also provides all the information you need regarding
the prescribed study material, other resources and how to obtain them. Please study this information
carefully and make sure that you obtain the prescribed material as soon as possible.

We have also included certain general and administrative information about this module. Please read this
section of the tutorial letter carefully.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES


2.1 Purpose

The purpose of this module is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to:

● identify abnormal behaviour that is associated with distress and/or impairment in functioning.

● classify certain abnormal behaviour patterns according to the DSM-5 classification system.

● describe abnormal behaviour according to the African perspective and various other theoretical
models/perspectives.

● gain insight into the nature of abnormal behaviour and the suffering it causes.

● consider cultural descriptions and explanations of abnormal behaviour.

● become sensitive to factors that both threaten and promote mental health in your community.

● become actively involved in the promotion of mental health in your community.

2.2 Outcomes

When you have completed this module, you should:

● understand the complexities of abnormal behaviour and mental health.

● be able to distinguish between normal and abnormal behaviour.

● be able to identify abnormal behaviour in various multicultural contexts.

● be able to classify abnormal behaviour according to the DSM-5 classification system.

● be able to explain abnormal behaviour according to different perspectives.

● have a sound knowledge of professional and other support services in your community to which
you can refer individuals who show abnormal behaviour.

● be able to promote mental health on primary and tertiary levels in your community.

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter, in terms of which the university has placed curriculum

6.1 The Unisa First-Year Experience Programme

Many students find the transition from school education to tertiary education stressful. This is also true in
the case of students enrolling at Unisa for the first time. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and e-learning
institution, and it is very different from face-to-face/contact institutions. It is a mega university, and all our
programmes are offered through either blended learning or fully online learning. It is for this reason that
we thought it necessary to offer first-time students additional/extended support to help them seamlessly
navigate the Unisa teaching and learning journey with little difficulty and few barriers. We, therefore, offer
a specialised student support programme to students enrolling at Unisa for the first time – this is Unisa’s
First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme, designed to provide you with prompt and helpful information

7 STUDY PLAN
NOTE: Use the brochure Study @ Unisa for general time management and planning skills.

The semester module runs over ± 15 weeks. On average, students need about 150 hours to master the
material for this module. We advise that you draw up a study timetable as soon as possible. It should make
provision for all your subjects and unforeseen circumstances such as illness and work pressure to enable
you to work through the entire syllabus in good time and submit your assignments on time. The Abnormal
Behaviour and Mental Health module is very labour-intensive, and the volume of work is large. The module
is based on a continuous assessment plan. This means that you will be continuously assessed
throughout the module and there will not be an examination at the end of the semester. It is therefore
very important to study regularly.

There is no practical work for this module.

9 ASSESSMENT

9.1 Assessment criteria

This module is based on a continuous assessment plan, meaning that you will be continuously assessed
throughout the module. The structure of this module requires you to be actively engaged to master the
content and pass with good marks. This can be achieved by working systematically through the study
material, reading the prescribed textbook, consulting other resources, discussing the content with fellow
students, doing research on the content you are exposed to and completing as many of the assignments
as possible.

There will be a total of 10 assessment opportunities throughout the semester following the completion of
each study unit. You will be required to complete at least 8 of the 10 assignments. Each assignment
consists of 10 multiple-choice questions (MCQ’s) aimed at assessing your theoretical knowledge of
abnormal behaviour, as well as your ability to apply this knowledge in case study scenarios.

Assignments are completed on the Online Assessment tool on myModules.

9.2 Assessment plan

Continuous assessment means that you will not write any examination, but that all the assignments
you completed throughout the semester will contribute towards your final mark. Continuous
assessment refers to the ongoing periodic and systematic assessment and evaluation of students during
the process of learning. It is an alternative to a single, final summative assessment, as only these
cumulative assessments contribute to the final mark.

Assignments are numbered consecutively per Study Unit starting from 1.

Each semester offers 10 assessment opportunities for you to accumulate marks towards your final
mark. The 8 best results from any of the 10 assignments will be used to calculate your final mark for
the module. Each assignment will be available for a period of 48 hours from 20:00 on the date the portal
opens until 20:00 on the date that the portal closes. The assignment portal will close promptly at 20:00
(South African time) on the due date of the assignment. Each assignment will have a time limit of 40
minutes, and each student will only have one opportunity to complete and submit an assignment. If you
fail to submit an assignment for any reason, including illness or failure to plan your time, then you will forfeit
the marks for that assignment.

Fortunately, there are 10 assessment opportunities, whereas you only need to complete 8, and therefore
you have the option to treat any two assignments as elective assignments. Each of the 8 compulsory
assignments carries a weight of 12.5% toward your final mark for the module. You need a final mark of
50% to pass this module. If you complete more than 8 assignments, only your best 8 marks will count
towards your final mark. If you complete less than 8 assignments, you can still pass, provided that your
total accumulated marks for the assignments that you did complete equals more than 50%. For example,
if you only completed 4 of the 8 assignments, you can only pass if you scored 100% on all 4 assignments
that you completed, as this would equal a final mark of 50% for the module. There are no ‘make up’
assignments or final exam for this module.

Should you be sick, experience technical difficulties or miss an assignment for any other reason, you will
not be afforded an extension on that assignment, but it will be treated as one of your elective assignments,
and it will not count towards your final mark. If you are unable to submit most assignments due to illness
or for any other reason, then it is recommended that you defer the module to the next semester.

• To complete this module, you will be required to submit 8 assessments.


• All information about when and where to submit your assessments will be made available to you
via the myModules site for your module.
• Due dates for assessments, as well as the actual assessments are available on the myModules
site for this module.
• There is no summative assessment (exam) for this module at the end of the semester.
• This is a continuous assessment module and therefore the average of your 8 assignments
throughout the semester will be your final mark for the module.
• The assignments weighting for the module is 12.5%

9.4 Submission of assessments

• Unisa, as a comprehensive open distance e-learning institution (CODeL), is moving towards


becoming an online institution. You will therefore see that all your study material, assessments and
engagements with your lecturer and fellow students will take place online. We use myUnisa as our
virtual campus.
• The myUnisa virtual campus will offer students access to the myModules site, where learning
material will be available online and where assessments should be completed. This is an online
system that is used to administer, document, and deliver educational material to students and
support engagement between academics and students.
• The myUnisa platform can be accessed via https://my.unisa.ac.za. Click on the myModules 2023
button to access the online sites for the modules that you are registered for.
• The university undertakes to communicate clearly and as frequently as is necessary to ensure that
you obtain the greatest benefit from the use of the myModules learning management system.
Please access the announcements on your myModules site regularly, as this is where your lecturer
will post important information to be shared with you.
• When you access your myModules site for the module/s you are registered for, you will see a
welcome message posted by your lecturer. Below the welcome message, you will see the
assessment shells for the assessments that you need to complete. Some assessments may be
multiple choice, some tests, others written assessments, some forum discussions, and so on. All
assessments must be completed on the assessment shells available on the respective module
platforms.
• To complete quiz assessments, please log on to the module site where you need to
complete the assessment. Click on the relevant assessment shell (Assessment 1,
Assessment 2, etc.). There will be a date on which the assessment will open for you. When
the assessment is open, access the quiz online and complete it within the time available to
you. Quiz assessment questions are not included in this tutorial letter (Tutorial Letter 101)
and are only made available online. You must therefore access the quiz online and complete
it online where the quiz has been created.
• It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop computer, tablet
or laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell phone find it difficult to navigate the
Online Assessment tool on the small screen and often struggle to navigate between questions
and successfully complete the quizzes. In addition, cell phones are more vulnerable to dropped

9.5 Technical Issues encountered with Assignments

Please note that the academic department and your lecturers are not able to assist you with any technical
e.g., loss of internet, load-shedding, site down-time etc. when attempting to submit your assignments. So
please do not send your lecturers e-mails regarding these issues. Your lecturers can only assist with
content issues regarding your assignments.

9.6 The assessments

As indicated in section 9.2, you need to complete 8 assessments for this module. This module is a
continued assessment module. Details on the assessments can be found on the myModules pages for
this module.

There are no assignments included in this tutorial letter.

Assignments and due dates will be made available to you on myModules for this module. We envisage
that the due dates will be available to you upon registration.

9.7 Other assessment methods

All your continued assessment assignments for this module are in the Multiple-Choice format. Therefore,
there are no other assessment methods for this module for 2023.

9.8 The examination

There is no examination for this module. This is a continued assessment module and you will be assessed
throughout the semester. The best 8 assignments you completed throughout the semester will make up
your final mark for this module.

9.8.1 Invigilation/proctoring

Since 2020 Unisa conducts all its assessments online. Given stringent requirements from professional
bodies and increased solicitations of Unisa’s students by third parties to unlawfully assist them with the
completion of assignments and examinations, the University is obliged to assure its assessment integrity
through the utilisation of various proctoring tools: Turnitin, Moodle Proctoring, the Invigilator App and IRIS.
These tools will authenticate the student’s identity and flag suspicious behaviour to assure credibility of
students’ responses during assessments. The description below is for your benefit as you may encounter
any or all of these in your registered modules:

Turnitin is a plagiarism software that facilitates checks for originality in students’ submissions against
internal and external sources. Turnitin assists in identifying academic fraud and ghost writing. Students
are expected to submit typed responses for utilisation of the Turnitin software.

The Moodle Proctoring tool is a facial recognition software that authenticates students’ identity during
their Quiz assessments. This tool requires access to a student’s mobile or laptop camera. Students must
ensure their camera is activated in their browser settings prior to their assessments.

The Invigilator mobile application-based service does verification of the identity of an assessment
participant. The Invigilator Mobile Application detects student dishonesty-by-proxy and ensures that the
assessment participant is the registered student. This invigilation tool requires students to download the
app from their Play Store (Google, Huawei and Apple) on their mobile devices (camera enabled) prior to
their assessment.

IRIS Invigilation software verifies the identity of a student during assessment and provides for both
manual and automated facial verification. It has the ability to record and review a student’s assessment
session. It flags suspicious behaviour by the students for review by an academic administrator. IRIS
software requires installation on students’ laptop devices that are enabled with a webcam.
Students who are identified and flagged for suspicious dishonest behaviour arising from the invigilation
and proctoring reports are referred to the disciplinary office for formal proceedings.

Please note:
Students must refer to their module assessment information on their myModule sites to determine which
proctoring or invigilation tool will be utilised for their formative and summative assessments.

10 ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
10.1 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them as your own.
It is a form of theft. Plagiarism includes the following forms of academic dishonesty:

• Copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.

10.2 Cheating

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying the work of another student during
an assessment, or allowing another student to copy your work.
• Using social media (e.g., WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate assessment
information.
• Submitting corrupt or irrelevant files, this forms part of examination guidelines
• Buying completed answers from so-called “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating).
