L2 Graphic Design Software

This document discusses key concepts for imaging and design for online environments. It defines different types of visual representations like pictures, photos, and images. It also discusses photo editing software and techniques for manipulating images, such as adding filters and effects. Finally, it covers the basics of image editing, including features like layers, cropping, cloning, orientation, sharpening, softening, saturation, and adjusting brightness and contrast.

Lesson 2: Imaging and Design for Online Environment

Picture, Photo, and Image

– representation of a person, object, animal, scenery, or an abstract, or
anything under the sun.
– can be printed, made with hand, or made via computer software

Picture
– general term for any representation that are created with the use of colors,
pens, pencils, paints, etc.
– simply painting
– came Latin word pintura
– came out of nothing
Photo
– anything taken by a camera, digital camera, or photocopier.
– example: screenshot
Image
– any visual object that is modified or altered by a computer or an
imaginary.
– from photo, putting effects turns it into an image.

Photo Editing
– the processes of altering images, whether they are digital photographs,
traditional photo chemical photographs, or illustrations.
– example: putting stickers, filters, effects
– to remove unnecessary objects, to enhance photo

Graphic Software Programs

– software application that allows you to draw, edit, and manipulate a photo
or graphic file.
– examples: Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, Procreate, Instagram

The Basics of Image Editing

2D:
Raster
– an example of visual representation that are stored in a computer in the
form of a grid of picture elements or pixels.
– a visual representation of a person, object, etc., that is made up of
millions of pixels
– when zoomed in, pixelation is more seen
– limited zooming in because of resolution – dependent on the device used
(depending on the megapixel of the camera)
Vector
– illustrations, are stored as descriptions of lines, curves, and text instead of
pixels (called anchor points)
– adapts to the software, to avoid pixelation

3-Dimensional Modeling
– the process of developing a mathematical representation of any three-
dimensional surface of an object via specialized software
– called forms, there is depth (showing how important shadow is)
– length x width x height
– examples: 3D Art, 3D Animations

Features of Image Editors

1. Selection
– a method of selecting part(s) of an image
– a selection isolates part of an image so you can work on that area without
affecting the rest of the image
2. Layers
– transparent panes stacked on top of one another, which allow different
parts of each layer to show through.
Image Scaling
– process of resizing a digital image, making them larger or smaller

3. Cropping
– creates a new image by selecting a desired portion from the image being
cropped
– removes unnecessary parts or objects to the image
4. Cloning
– act of copying part of an image from one area to another by painting it in
place
– copies the environment
– used by AI to remove unnecessary parts in the photo.
5. Image Orientation
– altering an image to be rotated in any direction and to any degree
– if you want to focus on a subject, use portrait. If you want to focus to an
environment/surrounding, use landscape.
6. Sharpening
– an effect applied to digital images to give them a sharper appearance
– for image restoration – blurry images can be sharpened to highlight the
edges of the photo.
7. Softening
– makes images softer that removes some of the highly visible flaws
– what filters use
8. Saturation
– the intensity and purity of a color as displayed in an image
– creating a more vibrant color
9. Brightness and Contrast
– Brightness refers to the absolute (whole photo) value of colors
lightness/darkness
– Contrast is the distinction between lighter and darker areas of an image;
smarter – identifies the light and dark areas of a photo.
