C.S. Lewis
C. S. Lewis, or Jack Lewis, as he preferred to be called, was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern
Ireland) on November 29, 1898. He was the second son of Albert Lewis, a lawyer, and Flora
Hamilton Lewis
Narnia Who is C.S. Lewis?
Initially when Lewis turned to writing children's books, his publisher and some of his friends tried to
dissuade him; they thought it would hurt his reputation as writer of serious works. J.R.R. Tolkien in
particular criticized Lewis's first Narnia book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He thought
that there were too many elements that clashed—a Father Christmas and an evil witch, talking
animals and children. Thankfully, Lewis didn't listen to any of them.
Following the publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950, Lewis quickly wrote 6
more Narnia books, publishing the final one, The Last Battle, in 1956. Although they were not well
received at first by critics and reviewers, the books gained in popularity through word of mouth. The
Narnia books have since sold more than 100 million copies and are among the most beloved
books of classic children's literature.
The Final Years
After finishing the Narnia series, Lewis continued to write on autobiographical and religious
subjects, but less prolifically. Mainly he was preoccupied with the health crises of his wife, Joy
Gresham, whom he married in 1956 and who died of cancer in 1960.
After her death, Lewis's own health deteriorated, and in the summer of 1963 he resigned his post
at Cambridge. His death, which occurred on November 22, 1963—the same day President
Kennedy was assassinated—was only quietly noted. He is remembered, however, by readers the
world over, whom he has delighted and inspired for generations.

5. Do you know about the beginning of fairy tailes? Read this text and answer the questions.

"Snow White" is a German fairy tale known across much of Europe, and is today one of the most
famous fairy tales worldwide. The Brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their
collection Grimms' Fairy Tales. The Grimms completed their final revision of the story in 1854.

The fairy tale features such elements as the magic mirror, the poisoned apple, the glass coffin,
and the characters of the evil queen and the seven dwarfs, who were first given individual names
in the Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1912) and then given different
names in Walt Disney's 1937. The Grimm story, which is commonly referred to as "Snow White",
should not be confused with the story of "Snow White and Rose Red, another fairy tale collected
by the Brothers Grimm. Retrieved from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_White

Cocoa Fields
The Freedom Project wanted our team to answer one question: Ten years after all the major players
in the chocolate industry promised to end trafficking and child labor in Ivory Coast, did they keep that
promise? Chocolate companies specifically repeat how remote the thousands of cocoa farms are.
They say it makes it extremely hard to end child labor and trafficking. They say it makes it hard to
find trafficking victims. It is just, well, hard. So we set out on the first day of our shoot not knowing
what we would find. The tar roads turned to dirt roads and led to footpaths.

On the second farm we visited on our first day of shooting, we found trafficked children. Let's call
them what they are: slaves. They said they had been brought from Burkina Faso, they couldn't leave
their farm, and they weren't paid. We’ve been on a lot of difficult shoots, but finding child slaves on
our first day was not difficult.

And the question we then asked ourselves was, “Why was it so easy?” We didn't have the backing of
the U.S. Congress, the billion-dollar chocolate industry or the Ivorian government. We were just four
journalists and a car. But all the farmers we met said no one had visited them to tell them to stop
using child labor. (A recent Tulane report on the protocol says that 97% of farms haven’t been
reached.) Several government and industry campaigners tasked with ending child trafficking said
they had recently visited the area on outreach. Well, not to the places we visited.

The trafficking taking place in Daloa is easy to find. It is a part of life in this region. It has become
normal. That word, normal, is a horrible way to describe child trafficking, but we were struck by how
normal it had all become.
Abdul has been working in the fields for three years. He is 10. He was trafficked from neighboring
farms. He can’t leave the farms, can’t go to school, and he isn’t paid. Slave. His white T-shirt has
more holes on the back than it does actual cotton fabric. His arms are abnormally developed for his
age because of the hard labor. But Abdul knows nothing else. This is just what life is like here. It is
normal. Sometimes when you get back from a shoot, or even when you are on it, it hits you how
awful it is: the faces of fear and anguish. The words of pain.Slavery in the cocoa fields is different.

The children we spoke to in Ivory Coast weren't upset. They weren’t chained or locked up.

These children know nothing else. They don’t know what freedom is – can’t even imagine it. They
are resigned to their fate because, to them, this is just how it is here.Slavery in the cocoa fields of
Ivory Coast is normal. It’s routine. And it’s easy to find.

Digital Learning
The class, and the Kyrene School District as a whole, offer what some see as a utopian vision of
education’s future. Classrooms are decked out with laptops, big interactive screens and software that
drill students on every basic subject. Under a ballot initiative approved in 2005, the district has
invested roughly $33 million in such technologies.
The digital push here aims to go far beyond gadgets to transform the very nature of the classroom,
turning the teacher into a guide instead of a lecturer, wandering among students who learn at their
own pace on Internet-connected devices. “This is such a dynamic class,” Ms. Furman says of her
21st-century classroom. “I really hope it works.”
Critics counter that, absent clear proof, schools are being motivated by a blind faith in technology and
an overemphasis on digital skills — like using PowerPoint and multimedia tools — at the expense of
math, reading and writing fundamentals. They say the technology advocates have it backward when
they press to upgrade first and ask questions later.
The spending push comes as schools face tough financial choices. In Kyrene, for example, even as
technology spending has grown, the rest of the district’s budget has shrunk, leading to bigger classes
and fewer periods of music, art and physical education.
At the same time, the district’s use of technology has earned it widespread praise. It is upheld as a
model of success by the National School Boards Association, which in 2008 organized a visit by 100
educators from 17 states who came to see how the district was innovating.

2. Read the story below about Jack Chan’s life.

Jack Chan was born Chan Kong-sang on April 7, 1954, in Hong Kong, China. He began studying
martial arts, drama, acrobatics, and singing at age seven. When his parents moved to Australia to
find new jobs, the seven-year-old Chan was left behind to study at the Chinese Opera Research
Institute, a Hong Kong boarding school. For the next 10 years, Chan studied martial arts, drama,
acrobatics, and singing, and was subjected to stringent discipline, including corporal punishment
for poor performance. He appeared in his first film, the Cantonese featureBig and Little Wong Tin
Bar (1962), when he was only eight, and went on to appear in a number of musical films. Once
considered a likely successor of Bruce Lee in Hong Kong cinema, Chan instead developed his
own style of martial arts blended with screwball physical comedy. He became a huge star
throughout Asia and went on to have hits in the U.S. as well as an actor, director, and producer.

After Lee's tragic, unexpected death in 1973, Chan was singled out as a likely successor of his
mantle as the king of Hong Kong cinema. To that end, he starred in a string of kung fu movies with
Lo Wei, a producer and director who had worked with Lee. Most were unsuccessful, and the
collaboration ended in the late 1970s. By that time, Chan had decided that he wanted to break out
of the Lee mold and create his own image. Blending his martial arts abilities with an impressive
nerve—he insisted on performing all of his own stunts—and a sense of screwball physical comedy
reminiscent of one of his idols, Buster Keaton, Chan found his own formula for cinematic gold.
