10 The temperature of F degrees Fahrenheit (°F) is equivalent to C degrees Celsius (°C),

where C = a( F − b) .
(i) The melting point and boiling point of water are 0 °C (32 °F) and [3]
100 °C (212 °F) respectively. Find the value of a and of b.
(ii) Hence express F in termcs of C. [1]
(iii) You write to your Facebook friend on a certain day that the weather is [1]
sizzling hot. The temperature is 37 °C. However, your friend, an
American, does not understand degrees Celsius. Translate this
temperature into degrees Fahrenheit.

Soln (i) Note that a ≠ 0, otherwise C is always 0, which does not make sense. [3]
0 = a(32 − b) –––––––––– [1]
100 = a(212 − b) –––––––––– [2]
Since a ≠ 0, we can divide [1] through by a. 9M1

∴ b = 32 9A1
Substituting into [2],
