CE322-18 PRINCIPLES OF STEEL DESIGN – QUIZ NO.
4
STUDENT NAME: ___________________________________ DATE: ______________
STUDENT NUMBER: _______________________________ SCORE: _____________
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer/s in two (2) decimal places.
Each of your problem set solutions should be written on a new sheet of paper. The following rules will
apply in the grading of problem sets. Points will be deducted for each of the following items:
• No sketches where sketches are necessary or desirable as instructed.
• No units where units are applicable.
• Not rounding-off your final answers to an appropriate decimal place.
• Not boxing your final answers.
• Not numbering each page and each problem.
Note: No need to rewrite the problem. Just present your solutions. Use AISC section database if applicable.
Assume given loads as service load (unfactored) unless otherwise specified. Use the simplified formula
for Lr and Fcr.
Problem No. 1 (30 points)
Determine the maximum safe load w that the simply supported beam W24x55 can carry. Use ASD and
A36 steel. Lateral supports are located at ends and middle third points. Consider beam weight.
12.0m
a) Classify steel cross-section based on the slenderness (λ) ratio.
b) Calculate the value of moment gradient factor Cb of the end segment.
c) Determine the value of moment gradient factor Cb of the middle segment.
d) Determine the plastic moment Mp of the given section in kN.m.
e) Find the allowable flexural strength in kN.m of the end segment.
f) Find the allowable flexural strength in kN.m of the middle segment.

Problem No. 2 (30 points)
Consider the W21x68 cantilever beam below carrying a factored load wu = 25kN/m (selfweight included).
Use LRFD and A36 steel. Lateral bracings are at the support and free end only.

6.0m
a) Calculate moment gradient factor Cb?
b) Find the design flexural strength in kN.m.
c) What is the DCR against flexure?
d) What additional factored load in kN/m can be added in the whole span before failure?
e) Determine the design shear strength in kN. See section 507 of NSCP 2015.
f) Check adequacy against deflection. Assume allowable deflection limit as L/240.

Problem No. 3 (40 points)
The beam shown in figure has continuous lateral support of both flanges. The uniform load is a service
load consisting of 50% dead load and 50% live load. The dead load includes the weight of the beam. If
A50 steel is used, is a W12x35 adequate?
87.5kN/m
1.8m 5.5m 1.8m
a) Use LRFD.
b) Use ASD.
