Introduction:
What Does Automation Mean?

Automation is the creation and application of technologies

to produce and deliver goods and services with minimal
human intervention. The implementation of automation
technologies, techniques and processes improve the
efficiency, reliability, and/or speed of many tasks that
were previously performed by humans.

Why to use automation?

Usually, automation is employed to minimize labor or to

substitute humans in the most menial or repetitive tasks.
Automation is present in virtually all verticals and niches,
although it’s more prevalent in manufacturing, utilities,
transportation, and security.
For example, most manufacturing plants make use of
some automated process in the form of robotic assembly
lines. Human input is required only to define the
processes and supervise them, while the assembling of
the various components is left to the machines, which
automatically convert raw materials into finished goods.
In the technology domain, the impact of automation is
increasing rapidly, both in the software/hardware and
machine layer. The implementation of new artificial
intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies
is currently skyrocketing the evolution of this field.
Problem Statements
• Using automated systems in industry for making
tasks easier.
• Reducing time consumption and increase
efficiency in industry.
• Complete gain control of manufacturing process

In the information technology domain, a software

script can test a software product and produce a
report. There are also various software tools available
in the market which can generate code for an
application. The users only need to configure the tool
and define the process.
Advanced business intelligence in applications is
another new form of high-quality automation. In other
industries, automation has greatly improved
productivity in the last decades, saving time and
cutting costs.
From the simplest to the most complex application,
automation is present in many forms in our everyday
life. Common examples include household
thermostats controlling boilers, the earliest automatic
telephone switchboards, electronic navigation
systems, or the most advanced algorithms behind
self-driving cars.
Types of Automation System
Home automation – uses a combination of hardware and
software technologies that enable control and management over
appliances and devices within a home.
Network automation – the process of automating the
configuration, management and operations of a computer
network.
Office automation – involves using computers and software to
digitize, store, process and communicate most routine tasks and
processes in a standard office.
Automated website testing – streamlines and standardizes
website testing parameters for configuration changes that occur
during the development phase.
Data centre automation – enables the bulk of the data center
operations to be performed by software programs.
Includes automated system operations, also known as lights-out
operations.
Test automation – software code goes through quality assurance
(QA) testing automatically by scripts and other automation tools.

Automation describes a wide range of technologies that reduce

human intervention in processes, namely by predetermining
decision criteria, subprocess relationships, and related actions,
as well as embodying those predeterminations in
machines.[1] Automation has been achieved by various means
including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic
devices, and computers, usually in combination. Complicated
systems, such as modern factories, airplanes, and ships typically
use combinations of all of these techniques. The benefit of
automation includes labour savings, reducing waste, savings
in electricity costs, savings in material costs, and improvements
to quality, accuracy, and precision.
Objectives:
• Increased productivity.
• Greater product variety.
• Consistency in manufacturing.
• Working in difficult & hazardous
environment.
• Reduced cost of quality.
Automation includes the use of various equipment and control
systems such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers,[2] and
heat-treating ovens, switching on telephone networks, steering,
and stabilization of ships, aircraft, and other applications
and vehicles with reduced human intervention.[3] Examples range
from a household thermostat controlling a boiler to a large
industrial control system with tens of thousands of input
measurements and output control signals. Automation has also
found a home in the banking industry. It can range from simple
on-off control to multi-variable high-level algorithms in terms of
control complexity.
In the simplest type of an automatic control loop, a controller
compares a measured value of a process with a desired set value
and processes the resulting error signal to change some input to
the process, in such a way that the process stays at its set point
despite disturbances. In general usage, automation can be
defined as a technology concerned with performing a process by
means of programmed commands combined with automatic
feedback control to ensure proper execution of the instructions.
The resulting system is capable of operating without human
intervention
Requirements:
Software Requirements :
• 64- bit Operating System
• Netbeans IDE
• Arduino
• Proteus

Hardware Requirements :
• Laptop/Desktop with minimum 4GB
RAM
• Minimum i3 Processor system
• Arduino UNO Board
• Relay Module
• Electrical Devices
Methodology:
1. Interface – The interface is made by using java
programming in swing framework. It is an
application software.
2. Arduino Board – It is an hardware device which is
connected to the interface by using serial port.
3. Relay Module – It is an hardware device which is
connected to the Arduino Board.
4.Electric Device – The electric device (Industrial
machine, fans, lights) which is controlled by the
interface.

Machines performed basic tasks and work that

reduced manual labour. Today, industrial automation
is a wide range of machines, actuators, sensors,
processors, and networks that work to connect an
industrial environment. From PLCs, AI, Machine
Learning, and IoT devices, modern industrial
automation is focusing on the best way to leverage
technology.
Advantage:
• Increased productivity.
• Improved quality.
• Increased Consisting of output.
• Reduced human intervention.
• Reduced labour costs & expenses.
• High production rate.
• Greater product variety.
• There are several advantages of industrial
automation with manufacturers, OEMs, and
industrial operations can leverage to increase
operational efficiency.
• Monitoring provides data to make sure new
automated solutions meet goals. If production
data exists in silos it will be difficult to find how to
integrate automation solutions
To keep data from becoming a liability, find IIoT and
monitoring devices that offer built in security.
Encryption, gateway protection, and Cloud services
are some of the features that act like security guards
to keep your assets protected.
Disadvantage:
• Higher level of maintenance is needed.
• The risk includes the possibility that workers
will become slaves to automated machines.
• It requires high investment in general
purpose equipment.
• There is possibility of security threats.
• The output device is not changed even when
the reset switch is turned off.
Worker Displacement: The significant negative impact of
Automation is worker displacement since it results in job
losses for humans.
Needs Significant Capital Expenditure: Automation has
been a mainstay of the industry for many years. However,
before leaping Automation, producers must consider a few
unforeseen effects.
1. Can Become Unnecessary - Automation can
conveniently solve many issues. However, if a
modification is made that necessitates modifying the
Automation, this convenience may become
unnecessary. These adjustments might cost the
organization valuable time and resources while simply
serving to increase the burden
2. Could Create New Safety Risks: - Automation might
provide unanticipated dangers when operating
conditions change abruptly. For instance, even if a
driverless car is programmed to drive autonomously.
Conclusion:
We live in an era of advance technology which is
return is helping human to make task easier in life. In
some ways, the implementation of this system tends
to be a substitute to the work done by humans. In
short, replacing human beings in an industry. The
time consumed on the manufacturing has been
deducted since robots never get distressed and
capable to engage in risky jobs. The most important
aspect about the automation is that the industry will
always make complex task easier than ever and help
building a growth in the industry.
