Science in Architecture

Architecture is the art and technique of designing and building, as distinguishing from the skills associated
with construction. The basic forms or structures that used to create special relationship with the environment,
well communicating its functionality for its occupancy. The art, configuration, structure and structure of creative
and intellectual building of science and technology to meet human needs, and the time of change, technology
and interest. The word “Architecture” came into English in 1560s, from the Greek word architekton, meaning
'master builder'. 'Architecture' has long been used for any complicated system and from the 1960s computers.
According to Hannes Meyer, ”Building is a biological process which is not aesthetic process. In its design the
new dwelling becomes not only a machine for living but also a biological apparatus serving the needs of body
and mind.”

We live in the age of science and technology. It has changed the face of world in every sector. It plays an
important role in our professional as well as personal daily life. Development of every sector directly depends
upon development of science in that sector. Likewise Architecture is the art and science of designing and
engineering large structures and buildings. Those who choose to study architecture will have an enthusiasm for
both the sciences and the arts, and architecture admissions requirements typically consider both artistic ability
and mathematical proficiency. According to Paul Feyerabend, “Science is about questioning norms or
questioning what we think we know and I think architecture too is also about questioning what we know.
Architecture is definitely about providing mutually incompatible alternatives just the act of imagining new
world or imagining what could be there instead of what actually is there.
Now, talking about how architecture considers both art and science. Architecture is something that is both
creative and rational. To know how to solve the problems of architecture space requires both side of your brain,
at the one side the science to create space and another side to use that space in a beautiful way in the sort of art
which might think of as this creative side to design buildings requires you to produce something out of nothing.
In another way architecture is visual like an art but buildings also need to accommodate functions and various
uses. So, the science side might be how architects think about how to accommodate human use and program
over time. It may be making it visually and aesthetically at pleasing might be appealing to the artistic side.
Architecture is something that’s happening around us all time. To function well and properly serve individual,
communities, culture, and the environment, the design process of architecture involves wide-ranging
dependencies and a finished piece of architecture has serious implications on both the natural and build
environment. Because of this, we have always thought the process of architecture should be more akin to
science . It is difficult to exactly define ‘architectural technology’ as the result of its broad meaning.
Architecture is defined as comprehensive technical means and design method which is related to architectural
lighting, heating, facilities and environment, architectural construction, building energy saving, earthquake
prevention, etc. This definition is summarized by the various fields of architectural expertise involved and
although many fields were mentioned in this definition, they are still a part of the repertoire. Accordingly,
modern architectural technology has become a largely encompassing system in which there are three main
aspects: materials, designs and construction techniques. These techniques are mutually influenced and evolved
respectively. From a construction point of view, the content of architectural technology is divided into three
areas: material selection, structure design, and construction technique. Undoubtedly, science and technology are
the reasons for the development of these areas. The development of one area will lead to the change in other
areas and ultimately promote the evolution of architectural technology. However, science and technology are
not the only influences on the evolution 18 of architectural technology, as some changes are not necessarily
progressive. New laws and regulations, disappearance of traditional craft, economic fluctuations, as well as
trends and the other factors can cause hindering short term or long-term impacts. These impacts can be seen
through the changes of material, structure design and construction technique on architectural science. Arguably,
material, structure, and technique are the outward appearance of the architectural science. In comparison, the
advancements in science and technology with the accompanying changes in laws and regulations, traditional
craft and the economy are the intrinsic influences of the evolution of architectural technology. As such,
architectural technology impacts architectural art, both on its outward appearance, as well as intrinsically.
Natural science classes are useful for a career in architecture. While physics is the most obvious science because
it offers engineering and structural knowledge, other sciences are important too. Chemistry, for example, could
help an architect understand how certain building materials might interact .
The aesthetics of a building is one of the principle aspects considered in architecture.
Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature and expression of beauty. Architecture is a
design process which involves planning, designing, creating, erecting, constructing and executing construction
of various types of spaces that are functionally efficient, economical and aesthetically pleasing . For that reason,
it is essential to understand the overall deterioration mechanisms within the different levels of a building
including elements, components, facades and for the entire building. The appeal of a building covers the
combined effects of a building’s shape, size, texture, color, balance, unity, movement, emphasis, contrast,
symmetry, proportion, space, alignment, pattern, decoration, culture and context. The unique properties and
natural beauty of wood and other bio-based material make them desired for various applications including
construction. Facades and interior design. A building should be designed in order to satisfy requirements
regarding safety, serviceability, durability, but also aesthetics assuring proper structural performance through the
entire service life. For that reason, it is essential to understand the overall deterioration mechanisms within the
different levels of a building including elements, components, facades, and foe the entire building. Changes in
the appearance of materials can differ due to kineties of the responses related to the material resistance as well
as due to intensity of the degrading factors. Aesthetics can be an important link between technology
development, design and architecture. Thus, it is a connecting as well as separating element between philosophy
of technology and philosophy of architecture and design. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that deals with
the nature and expression of beauty. Architecture is a design process which involves planning, designing,
creating, erecting, constructing and executing construction of various types of spaces that are functionally
efficient, economical, and aesthetically pleasing. The two most important factors in the design of building are
form and function. Functionality is the most important aspect of space design. The other aspect is form or
aesthetics which related to feelings and emotions.
The balanced integration of artistic sensibility and scientific methodology as it applies to design buildings and
their environments is essential to create great architecture. The scientific method is used by architects to
research and develop concepts on myriad levels required to create buildings. It is true that vision is the first
connection between human and the world. Most of us, when we are walking through a space or street are
affected in one way or another by the looks of the buildings that we pass through, the positions of the objects
and the arrangements inside the space. But in architecture, the reliance in the sphere of vision will only made the
building existed merely on a surface level which is as an object of visual expression such as a postcard.
Architecture should be abled to interact with every human sense because it is a representation or expression of
human minds. And the only way to communicate with the mind is by experiencing the world and surrounding
through the senses. That is when architecture has moved on to another level. So, by using the modern
technology, not only to grasp the visual aesthetics that has become a trend. Nowadays, but also to craft the
experience that has been the nature and value of architecture since the early days. This will affect the human
physically and psychologically and will push the architecture to the full potential. Science and technology is an
essential part of architecture, construction and engineering field now and almost every individual that works in
these fields rely on them to help him/her work efficiently.
