3. CHECK FOR UPLIFT PRESSURE:

Uplift check for the pit has been carried out for "Tank Empty condition with Backfill Outside". To be on the conservative side,
the weight of top slab has not been considered.
Weight of wall = 4 * (10+0.6) * (5.5-0.5+0.3) * 0.6 * 24
= 3235.968 kN
Weight of base slab = (10+(0.5+1.6) * 2)^2 * 0.5 * 24
= 2488.32 kN
Weight of Backfill = ((10+2(0.6+1.6))^2-(10+ 2*0.6)^2)5*18
= 7372.8 kN
Total downward weight = 3235.968 + 7372.8 + 2488.32
= 13097.09 kN
Uplift due to ground water = (10+2(0.6+1.6))^2*(0.6+5-0.475)*10
(Buoyant force) = 10627.20 kN
FOS = 13097.09 = 1.232 > 1.20 Ref Cl 5.3 of SPC.N.10.CA-E-11003-rev_01
10627.20 Hence safe

4. CHECK FOR BEARING PRESSURE:

This has been checked for the critical most case when Tank is full and No Ground water is there.

Net Safe Bearing Capacity = 30.1 kN / m2 for 35 mm settlement @ 5.5 m below FGL
Corresponding Gross Bearing Capacity = 30.1+ 5.5 * 18 Ref . Geotechnical Report Part

= 375 kN
Pump weight = 65 kN
Water weight = 4.1*10*10 * 10
4100 kN
Total Vertical Dead Load = Weight of wall + base slab+ soil weight+ weight of top cover
water weight + pump weight
= 3235.968 + 7372.8 + 2488.32+375+65+4100

LOAD CALCULATION FOR WALLS

The walls are considered as vertical panels fixed on 3 sides and free at top. Loading have been considered on walls
for different Load conditions and Shear/ moment etc. have been found out using Moodys Chart.
Earth pressure coefficient at rest = 0.43
Surcharge considered = 10.0 KN /m2
Height of water level at Operating condition h = 4.8 m
Thus, b = 5.0 m Strictly speaking b is 5.3 m . However as maximum soil height
a = 5.0 m is 5.0 m and we have Moody's Chart for loading equal to Full or
a/b = 5/5 = 1.00 2/3 rd or 1/3 rd of the height of wall, we have considered this is

Case 3. Soil + Surcharge from outside ( Inside Empty)- Seismic Condition

Lateral Earth Pressure Coefficients

Lateral thrust of soil against the sump wall shall also be accounted for under Seismic condition according to Mononobe Okabe
theory as directed by Cl. 9 of SPC.N.10-CA-E-11002-Rev.01

Lateral Earth pressure under Seismic case has been found out as per Cl. 8.1 & 8.3 of IS:1893-1984.

Angle of Repose, f = 35 degrees

Angle which earth face of wall makes with vertical a = 0 degrees
Slope of earth fill, I = 0 degrees

a. Under seismic condition

Horizontal seismic coefficient Ah (Ref Section "Seismic Force due to RCC wall " part of this document)
= 0.03 However Ah has been calculated as per Cl.9.0 of
av = 2/3ah = 0.02 SPC.N.10.CA-E-11002_Rev.01

Angle of friction between wall & earth, d = 0.7 f d = 0.6 to 0.8 f ( refer Foundation Analysis & Design by BOWLES)
= 24.5

(cos l)*(cos2 a)*(cos (d +l +a)) 1+ (sin (f + d) sin (f -l -l) 1/2

(cos (a - l) cos (d + a + l)
Here, f+d = 59.50 degrees
a -l 0.00 degrees
Ca For saturated soil under seismic condition

l = tan -1 (ah / 1 ± av)

= 1.68 degrees for +av
= 1.75 degrees for -av
Thus from the above data,
f -l -a = 33.32 degrees 33.25 degrees
d + l +a = 26.18 degrees for +av 26.25 degrees for -av
f -l -l = 33.32 degrees 33.25 degrees

(1± av )* cos2 (f -l -a )
= 0.7940 for +av and 0.7646 for -av
(cos l)*(cos2 a)*(cos (d +l +a))
1/2
(sin (f + d) sin (f -l -l) ) 0.7262 for +av 0.7258 for -av
= and
(cos (a - l) cos (d + a + l))

Thus, Ca for +av = 0.266

Ca for -av = 0.257
Hence consider max of Ca = 0.266
Ca For submerged soil under seismic condition

l = tan -1 [ gsat /(gsat-1) (ah / 1 ± av) ]

= 3.79 degrees for +av
= 3.94 degrees for -av
Angle of wall with earth face, d = 12.25 degrees (0.5 times of d)
Thus in this case,
f -l -a = 31.21 degrees 31.06 degrees
d + l +a = 16.04 degrees for +av 16.19 degrees for -av
f -l -l = 31.21 degrees 31.06 degrees
(1± av ) cos2 (f -l -a ) for -av
= 0.7780 for +av and 0.7506
(cos l)*(cos2 a)*(cos (d +l +a))
1/2
(sin (f + d) sin (f -l -l) ) for -av
= 0.6816 for +av and 0.6804
(cos (a - l) cos (d + a + l))

Thus, Ca for +av = 0.275

Ca for -av = 0.266
Hence consider max of Ca = 0.275

As an alternative the total force on the Wall could have been found by the following expression:

P = a h * w * (h2/√3) * tanh √3 (l/h) Ref. Eqn. 16 of the Paper

"Dynamic Pressures on

This is obvious from the equation that the pressure

distribution is parabolic. ( This has also been illustrated
in the Fig. 9A, Page 22 of SP22). For further
calculation based on Moody's Chart, this parabola
(shown in dotted line here) has been considered as an

Design surface crack width has been calculated as per Appendix -F of IS:456-2000. This is given by :

3 acr em
Wcr =
1 + 2(acr - Cmin) / (h - x)
where,
Distance from the point considered to the surface of the
acr = = SQRT(150^2 + 50^2) = 158 mm
nearest longitudinal bar
Cmin = Minimum cover to the longitudinal bar = 50 mm
average strain at the level at which cracking is b (h - x) (a - x )
em =
considered
= e1 -
3EsAs (d - x)
h = Overall depth of the member = 560 mm
d = Effective depth = 498 mm
x = Depth of the neutral axis = 0.87fyAst / 0.36fckb = 132 mm
a = The distance from the compression face to the point at which the crack width is being calculated
= 560 mm
b = The width of the section at the centroid of the tension stee = 1000 mm
Es = Modulus of elasticity of steel = 200000 N/mm2
e1 = Strain at the level being considered (At the extreme fibre in this present case)
(h - x) fs
= = 0.000008 mm
(d - x) Es
fs being the Service stress in tension reinforcement
= Ft / (Ac + mAst) = 841.92 * 1000 / (560000 + 13.3*3272)
= 1.40 N/mm2
where, Ft = Ms/ kd = 841.92 KN/m
Now, b (h - x) (a - x )
= 0.000255 mm
3EsAs (d - x)

Thus, em = 0.000008 - 0.000255 = = -0.00025 mm

And Wcr = 3 * 158 * -0.000247 / (1 + 2*(158 - 50) / (560 - 132))

= -0.08 mm < 0.1 mm Ref Cl. 6.4 of SPC.N.10-CA-E-11003-Rev_01
Hence safe
