Mathematics grade 6
QUESTION 1
Dian is making cookies. Each batch of cookie mix needs 0.4
kg of sugar and 0.6 kg of flour. Dian is making 4 batches
of cookies.
a. Dian measured 1200 grams of sugar. How much more
sugar (in grams) does she need?
b. Dian has 3 bags of flour. She has two smaller bags with
0.75 kg of flour each and a bigger bag which has 1.14
kg. Is it enough? Explain your answer.

a.Total sugar = 4 x 0.4 kg = 4 x 400 grams = 1600 grams

Sugar she needs = 1600 grams – 1200 grams = 400 grams

b.Total flour = 4 x 0.6 kg = 4 x 600 grams = 2400 grams

3 bags of flour = 2 x 0.75 kg + 1.14 kg
= 2 x 750 grams + 1140 grams
= 1500 grams + 1140 grams = 2640 grams
Yes, it’s enough. (2640 grams > 2400 grams)
QUESTION 2
Yus has swimming lessons every five days and diving
lessons every three days. If he had a swimming lesson and
a diving lesson on Tuesday, March 14, when will be the
next date on which he has both swimming and diving
lessons?

Swimming = 5, 10, 15, 20, …

Diving = 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, …
The least common multiple = 15

The day = Tuesday + 15 days

= Tuesday + 2 weeks and 1 day = Wednesday

The date = March 14 + 15 days = March 29

QUESTION 3
In a competition, 300 students appeared. 28% percent was
grade 4 students, 54% was grade 5 students, and the rest
was grade 6 students. Wulan said that the total of grade 6
students was more than 50 students. Do you agree with
Wulan? Explain your answer.

Grade Percentage Number of students

4 28% 84
5 54% 162
6 100% - (28% + 54%) = 18% 54
Total 100% 300

Yes, I agree with Wulan. The total of grade 6 was 54. It

was more than 50 students.
QUESTION 4
The ratio of pears to apples is 1 : 3. If there are 150
apples, how many pears and apples are there altogether?

Pears

Apples = 150

3 units = 150
1 unit = 150 ÷ 3 = 50

Pears + apples = 4 units = 4 x 50 = 200

Or..
Pears + apples = 50 + 150 = 200
QUESTION 5
Arrange the following things from the heaviest:
a. 2 stacks of old newspapers weighing 2.5 kg per stack
b. 5 medicine capsules weighing 500 mg each
c. 4.4 kg of candies
d. 1500 g of stones

a.2 x 2.5 kg = 2 x 2500 g = 5000 g

b.5 x 500 mg = 2500 mg = 2.5 g
c.4.4 kg = 4400 g
d.1500 g

Arrengement from the haviest = a, c, d, b

QUESTION 6
Rany is 175 cm tall while her friend Feny is 1680 mm tall.
After 3 years, Rany grows by 40 mm and Feny grows by 7
cm. Which of the two is taller after a year and by how
much (in meters)?

Rany = 175 cm + 40 mm = 175 cm + 4 cm = 179 cm = 1.79 m

Feny = 1680 mm + 7 cm = 168 cm + 7 cm = 175 cm = 1.75 m

The difference = 1.79 m – 1.75 m = 0.04 m

Rany is taller by 0.04 meters

QUESTION 7
Shelly has a rectangular garden of length 22 m and width
15 m. Her friend Rachel has a square garden of side 21 m.
a. Shelly needs to buy fencing to go around her garden.
How much fencing will she need?
b. Whose garden is bigger and by how much?

a.Shelly’s Fencing = 2 x 22 m + 2 x 15 m
= 44 m + 30 m = 74 m

b.Shelly’s garden = 22 m x 15 m = 330 m2

Rachel’s garden = 21 m x 21 m = 441 m2
The difference = 441 – 330 = 111 m2
Rachel’s garden is bigger by 111 m2

QUESTION 9
The length of nine caterpillars are listed below
9cm, 4cm, 8cm, 10cm, 7cm, 5cm, 13cm, 10cm, 6cm
(a) Find the mode
(b) Find the median
(c) Find the mean

(a)Mode = 10 cm
(b) 4 cm, 5 cm, 6 cm, 7 cm, 8 cm, 9 cm, 10 cm, 10 cm, 13 cm
Median = 8 cm
(c)Mean = total data ÷ number of data
= (4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 10 + 13) ÷ 9
= 72 ÷ 9 = 8
QUESTION 10
The team scored the following number of runs in their
games this season:
6, 2, 5, 9, 11, 4, 5, 8, 6, 7, 5
If they want to end the season with an average of 6 runs
per game, how many runs must they score in their final
game of the season?

Total data(11 games) =6 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 11 + 4 + 5 + 8 + 6 + 7 +

5 = 68

Total data + final score = 6 x 12

68 + final score = 72
final score = 72 – 68 = 4
