Course Description:
What makes a good leader? In a changing and diverse workforce, leadership is increasingly becoming an
essential skill for success. Students explore critical characteristics and models of leadership relating them to
theoretical and historical perspectives. Students reflect on the impact and value of leadership on their personal
lives in a variety of contexts.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1. Describe leadership styles and skills;
2. Explore contemporary leadership from a Canadian and global perspective;
3. Apply leadership practices to historical and contemporary perspectives;
4. Investigate leadership development from a personal perspective;
5. Examine various leadership concepts and issues;
6. Develop a personal philosophy on the nature of leadership and its value in our lives.

Expectations and Keys to Student Success
Attendance and participation are keys to success! Students should arrive early and be prepared to start
on time. Attendance will be taken each class. Concerns will be addressed on a case by case basis –
possible referral to a Student Advisor.
Technology (tablets, lap-tops, etc.) holds a valuable place as a tool to enhance our learning experience
so long as it is not distracting to you or others and is in line with the Student Code of Conduct.
Plan your semester to ensure effective time management balancing all your classes. For a semester

Blackboard will be essential in the course for posting lecture notes, post assignment descriptions and
rubrics, grades, course announcements etc. Check Blackboard and your student email the night before
or the morning of class to catch any last-minute announcements.

Take responsibility for your own learning! Keep track of deadlines, work ahead where possible, and take
personal time to unwind! Ultimately, you own the result - positive to negative!
Assignments
Assignments are posted to Blackboard for your references. Pay close attention to deadlines and submission
requirements. Assignments will be reviewed in-class but questions about assignments should be addressed
well before the due date in class or by email.
Assignments not submitted on time will receive a grade of ZERO in accordance with Georgian College Policies
and Procedures. In case of inclement weather, an announcement will be made on Blackboard with instructions
for submission.
If you are concerned about your ability to complete an assignment on time, contact me a minimum of 24-
hourse before the due date to arrange an extension.
Assignments will be returned to students within two weeks of the due date unless there are extenuating
circumstances. In those rare cases, students will be informed via Blackboard or in class.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a core value at Georgian College and a priority in all academic activities. Students are
responsible for being aware of and demonstrating behaviour that is honest and ethical. Students are also
expected to take responsibility for their own academic work, adhering to integrity standards for themselves
and their program but also encouraging and cultivating a culture of integrity among their classmates.
In this course, students will be provided with several opportunities to learn about academic integrity and
proper use of APA Referencing. It is the student’s responsibility to seek out answers to questions if needed.

In-Class Work
We will complete individual and group activities during class time throughout the semester. Some will be
collected and count towards the In-Class Work (10%) portion of your final mark. These will consist of
completion marks with some exceptions announced before class.
All work must be completed in class. If you miss the class, there will not be opportunity to make up this work.
If you submit work that does not have your name on it, you will not be able to receive your mark. This mark
will be updated at the end of the term, however, if you would like to see how you are doing let me know.
