Surface Area of Cube and Cuboid

The document provides lesson objectives, definitions, and examples for calculating the surface area of cubes and cuboids. It defines surface area as the total area of all surfaces or faces of an object. The surface area of a cube is calculated as 6 times the area of one face, or 6 times length x length. The surface area of a cuboid is calculated by finding the area of each rectangular face and adding them together. Students are given sample problems to calculate surface areas and side lengths of cubes and cuboids.

MATHEMATICS

POOLS 9C and 9F

Topic: Solids
Sub-topic: Surface Area of Cube and Cuboid
Teacher: Ms. C. Thomas

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

1. understand what is meant by the term ‘surface area’

2. calculate the surface area of cube and cuboid.
3. calculate the length of a cube given its surface area.

WHAT IS SURFACE AREA?

When we are finding the surface area of a three dimensional shape, think of it as
unfolding the shape, or flattening it out, and then finding the area of each side.
When we add all of these areas up, we have the surface area. In general, the (total)
surface area is the sum of all the areas of all the shapes that cover the surface of the
object.

SURFACE AREA IS MEASURED IN SQUARE UNITS

Calculating the surface area of solids

1. Identify the number of faces the solid has (you would benefit from looking at the
net of the solid)

2. Calculate the area of each face.

3. Add all the areas together.

For example: Calculate the surface area of each solid below

Observe the net of the cube
1.

5cm
5x5

5x5 5x5 5x5

5cm

5x5 1. The cube has 6 faces

2. Each face is the shape of a square
3. To calculate the area of a square,
5x5 the formula is l x l

Surface area of Cube = (l x l) + (l x l) + (l x l) + (l x l) + (l x l) + (l x l)

= (5cm x 5cm) + (5cm x 5cm) + (5cm x 5cm) + (5cm x 5cm) + (5cm x 5cm) + (5cm x 5cm)
= 25cm2 + 25cm2 + 25cm2 + 25cm2 + 25cm2 + 25cm2
= 150cm2

Or, because we know that all 6 squares have the same length
Surface area of Cube = 6 (l x l)
= 6 (5cm x 5cm)
= 6 (25cm2 )
= 150cm2
Observe the net of the cuboid

2.

6x2

6x2
6x3 6x3

2x3

1. The cuboid has 6 faces

2. Each face is the shape of a rectangle
3. To calculate the area of a rectangle,
the formula is l x w

Surface area of Cuboid = (l x w) + (l x w) + (l x w) + (l x w) + (l x w) + (l x w)

= (2cm x 3cm) + (6cm x 2cm) + (6cm x 3cm) + (6cm x 2cm) + (6cm x 3cm) + (2cm x 3cm)
= 6cm2 + 12cm2 + 18cm2 + 12cm2 + 18cm2 + 6cm2
= 72cm2

Or, because we know that opposite faces (rectangles) have

equal dimensions, these can be paired

Surface area of Cuboid = 2(l x w) + 2(l x w) + 2(l x w)

= 2(2cm x 3cm) + 2(6cm x 2cm) + 2(6cm x 3cm)
= 12cm2 + 24cm2 + 36cm2
= 72cm2
