G. Motivation
Before we proceed to our lesson proper. Today
we will have an activity.

Activity 1: Solve Me!

Lyn has an assignment in
Mathematics 10. The problem what is the
center and the radius of the circle
x2+y2+10x+4y-7=0?

Since the problem is general form. We need

to find the standard form first.

Who can derive the general form into (Veejee raised his hands)
standard form?
(Veejee solve the equation
Yes, Mr. Veejee! into standard form to the
board)
Possible answer:
x2+y2+10x+4y-7=0
x2+10x +y2+4y=7
(x2+10x)+( y2+4y)=7
(x2+10x+_)+( y2+4y+_)=7
(x2+10x+25)+
( y2+4y+4)=7+25+4
(x+5)2+( y+2)2=36
(x+5)2+( y+2)2=62

Very good Mr. Veejee!

Now, what is the constant in the equation? (Adrian raised his hand)

Yes Mr. Adrian! Sir, the constant is 7

Very good Mr. Adrian!
Everyone: Yes sir!
Do we need to transpose the constant?

What is the square of one-half the

coefficient of x? (Jasper raised his hand)

Yes Mr. Jasper! 25 sir!

Very Good!

How about the square of one-half the (Karen raised her hand)
coefficient of y?
4 sir!
Yes Ms. Karen!

Very good!

What are the factors of y2+4y+4? (Mikee raised her hand)

Very good! ( y+2)2 or (y+2)(y+2) sir!

What is the center of the circle? And the (Wenjessa raised her hand)
radius of the circle?

Yes Ms. Wenjessa! The center is (-5,-2) and the

radius is 6.
Thank you Ms. Wenjessa!

Thank you everyone let’s proceed to our

new lesson!

H. Presentation of the lesson (lesson proper)

To graph the center and radius of a circle from the (students attentively listening)
equation, we need to transform the equation to its
standard form (x-h)2+(y-k)2=r2.

Example 1:
Sketch the graph of the circle defined by the
equation x2+y2=25.
Solution:

Step 1: Determine the center and radius.

Center = (0, 0)
Radius = √ 25 = 5

Step 2: Construct a coordinate plane then plot the

center which is at the origin (0, 0). Label it as point
C.

Step 3: Plot the radius points. The radius points are

located using the length of the radius from the (students attentively listening)
center. Extend the length of the radius in four
directions: left, right, up, and down. Since the
radius is 5 units and the center has coordinates
(0,0), 5 radius points could be obtained by;

 Counting 5 units to the left from (0,0),

 Counting 5 units to the right from (0,0),
 Counting 5 units upward from (0,0), and
 Counting 5 units downward from (0,0).

Step 4: Connect the radius points to sketch the

graph of the circle.

r=5

C(0,0)

Example 2:
Show the graph of the circle whose equation
is given by (x+3)2+(y+5)2=25. Then identify two
other points (ordered pairs) that lie on the circle.

Solution:
Determine the center and the radius.
Center: (h, k) = (-3, -5)
Radius = √ 25 = 5

Plot the radius points.

(x+3)2+(y+5)2=25

r=5
C(-3, -5)

Based from the graph, identify two exact

points (ordered pairs) on the circle. From the
illustration above, possible answer are (0, -9). To
verify if these points are on the circle, check if each
point satisfy the equation. Let us check (0, -9).

(x+3)2+(y+5)2=25
(0+3)2+(-9+5)2=25 substitute the
coordinates in the equation of the circle
(3)2+(-4)2=25 simplify
9+16=25
25=25 Since (0,9) satisfies
the equation, hence the point is on the circle

Example 3:
Plot each set of points on the coordinate
plane, then connect the consecutive points by a line
segment and describe each figure form. H(-3,3),
O(3,3), M(3,-3), E(-5,-3).

H(-3,3) O(3,3)

E(-5,-3) M(3,-3)

In solving problems involving plane

coordinate plane, we need to find the equation of a
circle given in a certain conditions.
b. Reporting
Now, let’s check!

Mr. Adrian can you answer the #1? Yes sir!

Okay proceed! The standard form of the equation is

(x+1)2+(y+3)2=1 sir!

That’s Correct!
The standard form of the given equation is (x+1)2+
(y+3)2=1!

How about the coordinates of the center? (Emarfel raised his hand)

Yes Mr. Emarfel! Sir, the coordinates of the center is

(-1,-3)

Correct! The coordinates of the center is (-1,-3).

What is the length of the radius?

Mr. Jasper please answer the question #3. Okay sir!

The length of the radius is 1 unit sir!

Correct! The radius is 1 unit!

Who can answer the number 4? (Vejee raised his hands)

Yes Mr. Veejee (0.-3), (-1,-2), (-2,-3) and (-1,-4)

Very good Mr. Veejee!

Who can answer for the last one? (Karen raised her hand)

Okay Miss Karen! In Quadrant 3 sir!

Correct! It’s in the quadrant 3!

c. Drills
Now, let’s move to another activity.
I will show you the problem, after that I will asked
you a questions.

The radio signal can transmit messages up

to a distance of 4km. If the radio signal’s origin is
located at a point where coordinates are (3, 6).

Now, what is the equation of the circle to which

can be transmitted?
Okay Mr. Emarfel Yes sir!
(x-3)+(y-6)=16 sir!

Very good Mr. Emarfel!

Who can sketch the graph? (Veejee raised his hand)

Go ahead Mr. Veejee! (Veejee graph a circle on the board)

Impressive Mr. Veejee!

As you can see, the graph it has a center of (3,6)
with the radius of 4 that is correct!
I. Application

Now, I will give an activity that relates in our daily

living problem. Please group yourself into 3 and 1
of your group will present your output in the front.

I will give you 3 minutes only to finish the task.

(students starts doing their task)

boundaries of each Tower and graph.

a) Kind Tower: ________

b) Local Tower: ________
c) Stone Tower: ________

Okay time is up!

Pass your paper in the front.

J. Generalization

I will ask you if you already understand our topic for

today.
Answer may vary.
How will you find the center and radius from the
given equation? Possible answer:

If the equation is already in standard

form we will easily get the center (h,k)
and the radius.

If the equation is in the general form we

need to transform into standard form to
get the center and the radius.
Very good!

To graph we need to find the center

How will you graph the given equation? and radius from the given equation
then plot and draw a circle

very good! I think you understand our topic today!

IV – Evaluation

Now, get a ½ crosswise of paper and your graphing

paper to draw your graph. Read carefully and answer
what is asked!
You only have 5 minutes to finish you quiz!

A city’s commuter system has three zones. Zone 1 (busy for answering)
serves people living within 3 miles of the city’s center.
Zone 2 serves those between 3 and 7 miles from the
center. Zone 3 serves those over 7 miles from the
center.

a) Graph this situation on a coordinate plane

where each unit corresponds to 1 mile. Locate
the city’s center at the origin.
Determine which zone serves people whose homes are
represented by the points (3, 4), (6, 5), (1, 2), (0, 3),
