Unit 3 Analysis of Data Assignment Part 1 March 2023 v2

The document contains data from a student survey about commute times to school by bus or car. It includes box-and-whisker plots of the data and calculations of measures of center, spread, and range for each dataset. It also contains data on dogs' shoulder heights and tail lengths with a scatter plot showing their relationship. The correlation coefficient is calculated and one data point is interpolated from the plot.

Unit 3: Analysis of Data Assignment Part 1 v2

***Complete the following assignment and submit online using D2L.***

1. Emma and Daniel are surveying the times it takes students to arrive at
school from home. There are 2 main groups of commuters who were in the
survey. There were those who drove their own cars to school, and there were
those who took the school bus. Emma and Daniel collected the following
data:

Bus times (min) 15 22 18 24 25 12 26 16 8 34

Car times (min) 18 10 12 13 8 25 12 10 5 6

a) Draw a box-and-whisker plot for both sets of data on the same number
line using Desmos. [4 A]

Bus is blue Box-and-Whisker plot, Car is purple Box-and-Whisker plot

b) Identify the following for each data set. [6 A]

Bus Car
8 5
Least Value
15 8
First Quartile (𝑄1)
20 11
Median (𝑄2)
25 13
Third Quartile(𝑄3)
34 25
Greatest Value
26 20
Range

c) Use the double box-and-whisker plots to compare the times it takes for
students to arrive at school either by car or by bus. [4 T]

After Analyzing both box-and-whisker plots, I realized that it takes students more time to
come to school by bus transportation than a car. 50%(between Q1 and median) of students
using a car take about 11mins or less, but for us transportation, 50%(between Q1 and
median) of students take a 20mins or less, making it a 9min difference between both
transportation methods. Finally, driving by car has a range of 20mins while a bus has a
range of 26mins. The IQR for the bus is 10 and the IQR of the car is 5. Overall, coming to
school by car is more reliable and efficient.

2. The table shows the lengths of the tails and the shoulder heights for a group of
dogs.

Shoulder Length of Tail

a) Create a scatter plot of the data using Desmos. [4 A]

Shoulder Height (cm)= Independent Variable
Length of Tail (cm)= Dependent Variable

b) Compare the relationship between variables. Include the

correlation coefficient in your comparison. [2 T]
Shoulder Height (cm)= Independent Variable
Length of Tail (cm)= Dependent Variable
After analysing both variables, (x=shoulder length, y=length of tail), I
noticed that the increase of a dog’s shoulder height, the length of the tail
also increases. This graph shows a positive correlation since the value of r
is 0.9577, meaning it a positive strong linear correlation relationship.

c) Using the scatter plot created, predict the shoulder height for a dog
with a tail of 21 cm.[1 A]

Overall, I predict that the shoulder height for the dog with a length of 21cm
for its tail is 50cm. This is interpolating data given since we can predict since
its in the number range.
